In my /var/log/boot.log I have this:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
udevd[316]: BUS= will be removed in a future udev version, please use SUBSYSTEM= to match the event device, or SUBSYSTEMS= to match a parent device, in /etc/udev/rules.d/99-vmware-scsi-udev.rules:12
udevd[316]: SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to match a parent device, in /etc/udev/rules.d/99-vmware-scsi-udev.rules:12

[74G[ OK ]
Starting DECnet...RTNETLINK answers: Device or resource busy

Does this give any clue to my problem?
Does anybody want to comment on my suggestion theat the start order of TCPIP vs. decnet is wrong?

Are you really sure decnet is started before TCPIP in Ubuntu 10.10?
As far as I understand, the Upstart model is coming to Debian soon.

bnilsson@ubuntu:~$ dnlogin vicad1
Cannot connect to vicad1: Rejected by object
What may cause this message? What object does it refer to?
The object is the decnet equivalent of a port number (more or less) so
it sounds like there was something in the connection request which the
remote node didn't like.
I'd suggest getting a tcpdump of the connection attempt and comparing it
with the decnet docs. Unfortunately the objects formats are not
described properly in all cases, so the Linux source may turn out to be
a better reference,
Steve.

Btw, Ubuntu 10.10 uses the 2.6.35 kernel, and I don’t think decnet
works in this kernel. I know it to work up to 2.6.32, but I’m not
sure about after that.

Subject: Re: [Linux-decnet-user] Ubuntu 10.10: Rejected by object
More news,
I found version 2.55.
When installing dnet-common_2.55_all.deb, I got the following
warning:
update-rc.d: warning: decnet start runlevel arguments (S) do not
match LSB Default-Start values (2 3 4 5)
update-rc.d: warning: decnet stop runlevel arguments (1) do not
match LSB Default-Stop values (0 1 6)
Could this be important?
I read that decnet nust be started before tcpip, and it looks to me
this could affect this.

try: ifconfig $IFACE allmulti

Hiya The thing to do is to upgrade dnprogs. Version 2.45 has a changelog entry that says "fix crash in dnroute daemon" ;-) The latest version is 2.55 Chrissie On 11 Nov 2010, at 19:12, Bob Armstrong wrote: > I've used Linux DECnet successfully with local Ethernet connections, but > now I'm trying to set up a Multinet link and dnroute segfaults every time I > start the Multinet link. I've used Linux DECnet successfully with local Ethernet connections, but now I'm trying to set up a Multinet link and dnroute segfaults every time I start the Multinet link. Of course, Multinet may have nothing to do with it - all the hosts in on my local network are in the same area and so when Multinet starts it's also the first time dnroute ever sees another level 2 routing node. The host is Debian/Lenny - bob@ziti:~$ uname -a Linux ziti 2.6.29.3-ziti.4 #1 Sun Nov 7 20:38:06 PST 2010 i586 GNU/Linux The dnprogs package is v2.44 bob@ziti:~$ /usr/sbin/dnroute -V dnroute from dnprogs version 2.44 The /etc/default/decnet file says bob@ziti:~$ cat /etc/default/decnet # DECnet configuration for ZITI - RLA [8-Nov-2010] DNET_INTERFACES="eth0" DNET_DAEMONS="dnetd dnroute" dnroute_FLAGS="-v -2" ROUTING=2 PRIORITY=16 (Note that Multinet is not started in here - for the time being, I'm starting it manually...) ziti:/home/bob# ps aux | grep -i dnroute root 2993 0.0 0.2 1672 548 ? Ss 10:42 0:00 /usr/sbin/dnroute -v -2 ziti:/home/bob# dnetinfo Addr Dev 2.1 LEGATO eth0 2.16 ziti! lo ziti:/home/bob# multinet 2.16 192.108.200.211 & using tun device tap0 Remote address = 59.58 (60474) ziti:/home/bob# dmesg | grep -i dnroute [ 383.364356] dnroute[2997]: segfault at 0 ip 0804ac18 sp bfaa3ca0 error 4 in dnroute[8048000+6000] Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Hopefully it's something easy :-) Thanks, Bob Armstrong |

I think the problem is 'earlier' than the connection to the remote system.
bnilsson@jbx5d2-desktop:~$ dnlogin fyvax7
Cannot connect to fyvax7: Rejected by object
bnilsson@jbx5d2-desktop:~$ dnping fyvax7

Unfortunately, the -d or -v options does not give any further information.

No change.
bnilsson@ubuntu:~$ dnlogin vicad1
Cannot connect to vicad1: Rejected by object
What may cause this message? What object does it refer to?
The object is the decnet equivalent of a port number (more or less) so
it sounds like there was something in the connection request which the
remote node didn't like.
I'd suggest getting a tcpdump of the connection attempt and comparing it
with the decnet docs. Unfortunately the objects formats are not
described properly in all cases, so the Linux source may turn out to be
a better reference,
Steve.

works in this kernel. I know it to work up to 2.6.32, but I’m not
sure about after that.

More news,
I found version 2.55.
When installing dnet-common_2.55_all.deb, I got the following
warning:
update-rc.d: warning: decnet start runlevel arguments (S) do not
match LSB Default-Start values (2 3 4 5)
update-rc.d: warning: decnet stop runlevel arguments (1) do not
match LSB Default-Stop values (0 1 6)
Could this be important?
I read that decnet nust be started before tcpip, and it looks to me
this could affect this.

does that help? (This may take one or two mins. before it helps).
If not please tell us your exact kernel version.
Linux jbx5d2-desktop 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:36:48 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 10.10
you said up to date version of dnprogs? Which is 2.55. Please confirm
that version.
I downloaded the latest 'stable' version which was 2.52, and I was able to build and install after adding ncurses by synaptic.
However, no change.
You mention 2.55. Where can I find this?
Please also confirm decnet to be loaded:
# lsmod | grep decnet
And tell us about your NIC:
# lspci | grep Ethernet
bnilsson@jbx5d2-desktop:~$ lsmod | grep decnet
decnet 61154 5 [permanent]
bnilsson@jbx5d2-desktop:~$ lspci | grep Ethernet
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM57760 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 01)
bnilsson@jbx5d2-desktop:~$
and this
bnilsson@jbx5d2-desktop:~$ dnping fyvax7
socket: No such device
