If you were running samba on the Alpha then that implies you have TCP/IP on it too ? If that's the case you could NFS mount the VMS disks from Linux and serve them out via samba on Linux. A bit indirect but it should work! patrick |

Hi, You can copy files on to the Linux box with the tools and then serve them from samba (maybe you want to set the copy up as a cron job) but you can't directly mount a remote filesystem over DECnet at the moment. Eventually we hope to have that feature but it will depend upon the time we can spend on writing the code as its all done in spare time and odd moments of which I've not had very many lately unfortunately, Steve. > > If I have decnet, does this mean I can get a file from > the "real" dec machine and serve it to a client > through samba? > > The whole reason for getting decnet was because samba > 2.2.7 never worked properly on the alphas. > > I thought if I had decnet, then I could get to the > files on the dec machine and use the samba on linux to > serve those files to an SMB (winnt) machine. > > Will it work for that? > > > --- Steven Whitehouse <st...@gw...> wrote: > > Hi, > > > > If you've got DECnet in your kernel you should have > > /proc/net/decnet_dev. > > If you are having problems with the device being > > busy its because you > > can only change the MAC address when the device is > > down, so if you > > run ifconfig eth0 it should not show "UP" in the > > list of flags on the > > third line of output when you start to run startnet, > > > > Steve. > > > > > > > > I have do not have a decnet_dev file under /proc. > > > But, thanks. > > > > > > Running startnet -hw eth0, just gives: > > > > > > Error setting hw address on eth0: Device or > > resource > > > busy > > > > > > RH 7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10 > > > > > > --- Steven Whitehouse <st...@gw...> > > wrote: > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > Yes, it is. If I have decnet, does this mean I can get a file from the "real" dec machine and serve it to a client through samba? The whole reason for getting decnet was because samba 2.2.7 never worked properly on the alphas. I thought if I had decnet, then I could get to the files on the dec machine and use the samba on linux to serve those files to an SMB (winnt) machine. Will it work for that? --- Steven Whitehouse <st...@gw...> wrote: > Hi, > > If you've got DECnet in your kernel you should have > /proc/net/decnet_dev. > If you are having problems with the device being > busy its because you > can only change the MAC address when the device is > down, so if you > run ifconfig eth0 it should not show "UP" in the > list of flags on the > third line of output when you start to run startnet, > > Steve. > > > > > I have do not have a decnet_dev file under /proc. > > But, thanks. > > > > Running startnet -hw eth0, just gives: > > > > Error setting hw address on eth0: Device or > resource > > busy > > > > RH 7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10 > > > > --- Steven Whitehouse <st...@gw...> > wrote: > > > Hi, > > > > > > Yes, it is. Hi, If you've got DECnet in your kernel you should have /proc/net/decnet_dev. If you are having problems with the device being busy its because you can only change the MAC address when the device is down, so if you run ifconfig eth0 it should not show "UP" in the list of flags on the third line of output when you start to run startnet, Steve. > > I have do not have a decnet_dev file under /proc. > But, thanks. > > Running startnet -hw eth0, just gives: > > Error setting hw address on eth0: Device or resource > busy > > RH 7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10 > > --- Steven Whitehouse <st...@gw...> wrote: > > Hi, > > > > Yes, it is. I have do not have a decnet_dev file under /proc. But, thanks. Running startnet -hw eth0, just gives: Error setting hw address on eth0: Device or resource busy RH 7.2 kernel 2.4.7-10 --- Steven Whitehouse <st...@gw...> wrote: > Hi, > > Yes, it is. Hi, Yes, it is. See the linux/Documentation/networking/decnet.txt file for more info on how to set it. If you have problems setting the default device then its most likely because you are trying to use a device which has not been configured for DECnet. You can check which devices are valid by checking the /proc/decnet_dev file to see if its listed in there, if it isn't you can't set it as a default device, so you need to ensure that you configure your interfaces before you try setting the default device, Steve. > > Isn't it based upon my Mac Address? > > __________________________________________________ > Do you Yahoo!? > Yahoo! Here is the directory: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 debug -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 default_device -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 di_count -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 dn_count -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 dr_count -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 dst_gc_interval -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 node_address -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 node_name -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:22 time_wait All of them have rw for root, and I am the root user. For whatever reason, the simple echo -n > default_device will not populate. I cannot change it. Everything else I can - just not default_device. I have no idea why. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Platinum - Watch CBS' NCAA March Madness, live on your desktop! http://platinum.yahoo.com |

The docs are correct. That is how it works.

What leads you to believe this is true?

We are obviously missing some part of your problem. Are you trying to
change the default device as root or as an ordinary user? Observe:
$ ls -l /proc/sys/net/decnet/
total 0
dr-xr-xr-x 7 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 debug
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 default_device
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 di_count
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 dn_count
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 dr_count
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 dst_gc_interval
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 no_fc_max_cwnd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 node_address
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 node_name
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 24 17:33 time_wait
$ echo -n "eth0" > /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device
bash: /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device: Permission denied
$ su -
# echo -n "eth0" > /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device
# cat /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device
eth0
Or perhaps the problem is that you're attempting to edit with a text
editor? You can't do that with /proc because it isn't populated with
static files -- all of the content is dynamically generated by procfs.
However, cat and echo will work for reading/writing in /proc, provided
your owner/permissions line up with the resource you're trying to read
or modify.

I get this error when trying /etc/rc.d/init.d/decnet start: Starting DECnet: Error setting hw address on eth0: Device or resource busy doing this reveals there is no entry, so I don't know if it matters: cat /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device (gives nothing) doing echo -n "eth0" > /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device does not update the file. Doint the echo -n to node_name, node_address, does work. It just wont change the default_device file, but as I said above, I don't know if it matters, because when running the startup script, it mentions eth0 anyway. It just says it is busy. Thanks for any guidance. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Platinum - Watch CBS' NCAA March Madness, live on your desktop! http://platinum.yahoo.com |

Thanks for the help, but I cannot edit the file. This is why the echo -n won't work. This is the whole reason for writing to the group, because the online docs say to use echo, but one cannot edit /proc files, so it makes no sense and there is no sysctl variable to change. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I have RH 7.2. I used make xconfig to enable DECNet support. After compiling, etc. and rebooting. I can go to: /proc/sys/net/decnet And there are many files there. I have read how to change the appropriate ones. But I cannot edit them at all because they are in /proc. I have to use sysctl to modify the settings. But, I cannot alter default_device as it is not in sysctl and I cannot modify it directly. I believe this is why I get "no route to host," but I cannot change the value! Thanks for any help. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Platinum - Watch CBS' NCAA March Madness, live on your desktop! |

Thanks for that report, there's a limit to the number of distributions I can test :-) The new build system in latd 1.17 is something I am particularly keen for feedback on as this is the first time I have used GNU autconf for a prject. > 2) As for installation, the make file for dnprogs-2.22 does not correctly > figure out how to install the scripts for setting up the environment. This doesn't really surprise me. If you have any fixes or just suggestions as to what is going wrong then I would like to have them. My dev machines run Debian and I have a VMware instance of Red Hat but more than that gets a little unweildy (as well as time-comsuming). > My other questions deal with the notion of connecting Linux-decnet to a > running instance of E-11 on the same machine. I suppose it /might/ work if you dedicate an ethernet card to the emulator (so the other card would see the traffic). There are possibilities of doing it with simulated devices like tun/tap I think. but I haven't tried that. patrick |

Hello again from Gregg C Levine As most of you will note, it has been a while since I have posted to this list. I thought I should mention somethings. 1) Both latd-1.17 (Which was the latest version that I found on ftp://ftp3.sourceforge.net:/pub/sourceforge/linux-decnet ), and dnprogs-2.22 (Same as above.), compile without complaints on Slackware 8.0. 2) As for installation, the make file for dnprogs-2.22 does not correctly figure out how to install the scripts for setting up the environment. My other questions deal with the notion of connecting Linux-decnet to a running instance of E-11 on the same machine. But I shall reserve them for a later time. Gregg C Levine dr...@wo... "Oh my!" This is a major release in some sense, though a lot of you may not notice.
The big change is that latd now runs on NetBSD and Darwin as well as Linux, and
a consequence of this is that it now uses GNU autoconf to build, so if you want
to compile from sources you will need to
./configure && make
rather than just "make" as before. This is unlikely to happen to the DECnet
progs BTW as they are not going to be portable any time soon.
A huge thanks to Matthew Fredette of NetBSD for doing the NetBSD port and much
of the autoconf work. I have put further work into integrate his changes (which
were made to quite an old version of latd) and also used his work to port to
Darwin so it now runs on my laptop :-)
Currently, it will compile but not run on FreeBSD because of an error setting up
the multicast address, if anyone knows how to fix this then please let me know.
The changelog is below, there are some bugs fixed too, so even if you don't care
about non-Linux platforms it's probably still worth upgrading.
* Add support for a MOPRC_INTERFACE env variable.
* Fix bug in the lastest retransmit code that screwed up
queued connections rather badly.
* Don't show status messages to /dev/lat ports
* moprc is now a C++ program that uses the LATinterfaces class.
* llogin -p only locks devices if liblockdev is found
* Porting work for *BSD and Darwin.
HUGE thanks to Matthew Fredette of NetBSD for all the bpf work.
* Use autoconf to configure and build. Again Matthew Fredette did
most of the work for this, but I added the Linux bits.
If you have any comments on the new build system (like it fails for you!) please
let me know.

From the freevms list: There is an ods2 filesystem kernel module for linux (readonly) available: ftp.nvg.ntnu.no:/pub/linux/ods2 You'll need to tweak the Makefile to make it compile but it does work. I have a patch to make it work on Alpha. If anyone wants it then I'll make it available. I posted it to the freevms list but got no reply. -- patrick |

Hi, Its a little while since I last updated everyone on what I'm working on for Linux DECnet at the moment. I've got a new work-in-progress patch which is available here: http://www.chygwyn.com/~steve/kpatch/decnet/decnet-2.5.64-routing2.diff Its feature enhancements for 2.5 mostly - preparing the way for us to add zero-copy (needs a tidy around sendmsg/recvmsg first, which is done in this patch) and also starts to tidy up the routing code. This is an area which has been neglected for too long and I'd really like to get it fixed up. Part of the plan is to make it as similar to the IPv4 routing code as possible in order to take advantage of the work in optimising the code which has already gone on in the IPv4 stack and also so that people working on the IPv4 code will feel at home looking at the DECnet routing code to encourage them to help us along. This work-in-progress patch adds support for DECnet into flow.h and uses the struct flowi as a routing key, some further adjustments need to be done before the patch is submitted, in particular dealing with the "scope" of routes. In the future, as well as adding zero-copy support, the other major work item on my agenda is to change the way that the routing code works so that the current default behaviour will be maintained by the automatic addition of route entries into the routing tables. At this stage all routing decisions will be made by lookups in the routing table, unlike the current situation where many of the default rules described in the DECnet documents are implemented as special case rules built into the code and the routing tables are an extra add-on. This seems to make more sense to me since it will clean up the code and also mean that in special cases where people don't wish to (for whatever reason) abide by the default rules, they'll find the system more flexible. Please feel free to send me any comments, questions or suggestions, Steve. P.S. An article on the Linux DECnet project written by myself and Patrick Caulfield is in issue 27 of "Linux User" but only the news stand version I gather. A similar article will be appearing in "Ping" in the near future. |

This is rather odd - I've never heard a report of that before. > Trying to remove the DECnet module with RMMOD says "decnet: device or resource busy". Yes, thats because you can't unload the DECnet module as the support to shut everything down cleanly isn't there. It might eventually appear in 2.5 or above as since that decision was taken certain bits of the core kernel code have changed to allow removal cleanly. > > I'm pretty sure that I've done the MACADDR right in > /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0; it appears that the PC card > adapter in the notebook is Tulip based and the 3com in the desktop is not. > (Does MACADDR and HWADDR both work for this?) > Should do. I don't know any network cards which you can't set the mac address on. Try an ifconfig and see if its worked or not. > Another basic question: if this were working, should I be able to do a loopback dnping or sethost to test it? That currently tells me "Write: transport endpoint is not connected"; I assume a symptom of the problem above. > Yes. It sounds like you may not have set the default device ? You need to set it to the external interface (eth0 usually). Also look in /proc/net/decnet* and /proc/sys/net/decnet/* to see if the settings are as you expect, Steve. |
