About a year ago, I tried to get SLIP running, and I think I had to manually create the serial SLIP device with something like DEFINE COMMUNICATION_CONTROLLER SL /TYPE=SERIAL SET CONFIG INTERFACE SL0 or maybe it was SYSGEN> CONNECT xxA0 /NOADAPTER /DRIVER=zzDRIVER then run the UCX$CONFIG or TCP$CONFIG (or whatever the command file name is). I couldn't get SLIP to work, then found out that the serial port on the other computer was bad, and I never made the time to try again. But, I was able to start the stack and ping myself and telnet to myself. Bob |

I suppose the other thing it would allow you to do would be to tunnel DECnet over the internet - using SSH for security I suspectd that might make quite a good wide-area DECnet network. Incidentally I tried setting up SLIP in CHARON-VAX on Friday but the VMS TCP/IP stack doesn't want to start without an ethernet card :( patrick |

This brings up another point that I've wanted to talk about: using
the
MultiNet TCP/IP product for VMS, it's possible to encapsulate DECNet
inside of TCP/UDP/IP packets. Therefore, it could be possible to have
a DECNet WAN/LAN using TCP/IP over SLIP or PPP without having to
have a network card on the PC. But the cost of network cards have
plummeted so much lately.
Anyway, just a thought...

It's probably possible to set up PPP from that emulator to Linux but I've never tried it. You would, of course, need to install TCP/IP on the "VAX" . patrick |

Patrick said "it is possible to set up DDCMP networking to a real VMS machine". Is it possible to set up SLIP to anything else, and if so, can you SLIP with the emulated serial port directed to a telnet port? Bob |

The Free VAX emulator Charon-VAX is available for Linux again: http://www.softresint.com/charon-vax/hobbyist.html It doesn't include any ethernet support but it is possible to set up DDCMP networking to a real VMS machine or to another Linux/DECnet box using Eduardo Serrat's ethddcmp package. See the links page for the download and please read the instructions carefully. Also new to the links page is Nicolas Dupeux's DIBOL->C translator. patrick |

Not quite a brown-paper bag release but plenty of bugfixes for the new features
in 1.12 as well as things I broke earlier on in the 1.1x series - thanks to
those that reported problems.
The changelog looks like this:
* Fail attempts to create /dev/lat ports twice
* Delete /dev/lat ports when latcp -D -p is run
(thanks to Denis Komissaro) for those two.
* Use local name in ENQ message for DS90L servers instead of the
stupid one I left in there after testing.
* Get rid of spurious "Queued" status messages and put the
service name in there.
* Fix multiple queued connections to the same server that I broke in 1.11
* Don't make queued connection queries interfere with existing services table
* Restrict data slots to 250 bytes so as not to break DECserver 200s
* Made the keepalive timer less susceptible to drift on busy systems.

I've created a #decnet channel on irc.openprojects.net - if anyone fancies a chat about DECnet on Linux or LAT then meet me there. I'll be on as "pjc" usually between 8 and 5 GMT weekdays and more randomly at weekends. patrick |

I've tagged and upload the latest LAT. There are a few new features in this release that I hope people will find useful. Be aware that I still regard this branch as the "unstable" one but I think it's probably more stable than the 1.0 series now - please let me know if you disagree. New features since 1.11 are: * llogin -r is an alias for llogin -R (easier to type!) * New moprc program for remote administration of terminal servers * llogin can now connect to passworded services using llogin -w * Split out Linux-specific code into its own class * Primitive, but functional support for DS90L terminal servers New features since 1.10 are: * Added -l switch to llogin to replace LF with VT * Document -d -v switch to llogin * Renamed PortSession to QueuedSession so it's less confusing * /dev/lat ports connect using LocalPort and localportSession so they can share connections. * Fixed spurious newlines generated by llogin -p New features since 1.03 are: * Can now handle multiple reverse-LAT connections via the same connection * Can specify a command to run (and user to run it under) for a named service. This release also has some portability bits added, all the Linux-specific code has been moved into interfaces-linux.cc/h so that people can port LAT to other Unix systems - BSDs seem to be a popular request. Note that it will probably not be me that does this porting but the new split should make this task MUCH easier for those that want to have a go. I will accept patches from porters. To use lat with a DS90L printer port you /must/ define the port as queued and put the node name of the server in the latcp -A -p command. You can't use llogin with DS90L printer ports. I hope people find moprc useful - I certainly do! Access to passworded services is currently only supported by llogin - if you want this to be available from /dev/lat ports then let me know. I regard this as a release candidate - if I don't get any serious bug reports for this release then I will upload binaries, add it to the debian archive and retire 1.03. patrick |

If you want to set it though you can do echo "FISH" >/proc/sys/net/decnet/nodname for example. > less default_device > (nothing) ^^^^^^^^^ This you'd normally set to your default ethernet card and in endnode mode this is consulted in the case that you are trying to connect to a node from which no hello message has been received and when no default router can be found. > less node_address > 0.0 ^^^ This is what is probably causing you trouble. Its usually best to set this with either module options or on the kernel command line depending upon whether DECnet is a module or built in. There are some hints in the linux/Documentation/networking/decnet.txt file. The address set here has to match the DECnet address set in the MAC address of your ethernet card before it will work. This address has to be set first which is shy its best to do it via parameters when the DECnet subsystem is first initialised, Steve. |

It is being called too late in the startup sequence. you must start DECnet before TCP/IP because it needs to change the MAC address of the ethernet card. The recommended thing to do on Red Hat is to edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to contain the correct MAC address - which in you case is AA:00:04:00:32:08. See http://linux-decnet.sourceforge.net/faq-4.html#ss4.1 The Red Hat scripts are rather out of date these days I'm afraid - I don't run Red Hat so I can't really maintain them very well. patrick |

Hi, I have trouble with the installation of DECnet for Linux. I=B4ve an AS600 5/333 with Redhat 7.1. I=B4ve downloaded the kernel 2.4.9.-21 from RH and build my own with support for DECnet.
