Hi, i Fix X-Windows hangs in kernel with the patch [730051]. It seems it's working well but after a random time the X-Windows Freeze and i can do nothing, keyboard and mouse is blocked. Thanks Mohcine |

If lat has the device open (as it should) then the console should not be able to use /dev/pts/0. when LAT has finished with a device it will close and re-open a new one and that could possibly be a different pts device. but the symlink from /dev/lat/lta108 should always be right. I'd like to know more about just what is happening here. Is it that /dev/lat/lta108 is pointing to /dev/pts/0 AND the console is using it too? If this is the case then the symlink is incorrect somehow, maybe it is not being re-created after a session completes. > 2. In theory you should just point the printer spooler at /dev/lat/<name> instead of (eg) /dev/lp0, I've heard of problems with this but I think they were specific to a particular terminal server. There is a current problem with DS90L+ support (for which I have a patch I haven't integrated yet) in that it only sends out one request packet and if a response is not received then the service doesn't work. It doesn't sound like you are hitting this but it's one to be aware of. -- patrick |

Dear all, I've installed LAT V 1.18 on a linux 2.4.20-4GB (distrib SuSE Linux). Terminals over LAT are connected properly, but having problems to connect to a printer. I have found the following after /usr/sbin/latcp -A -p /dev/lat/lta108 -Hserv1 -Rport_8 -Q it is possible to write to the port 8 of the DS90L+ Terminal server, where I attached a VT Terminal. It seems that the reverse LAT is working. I discovered that the lta108 device is linked to /dev/pts/0 sometimes. But when I start a console session the dev pts/0 is used for that session thus the link for the LAT device gets wrong. Concerning this I've some questions: 1. How can I ensure that the device pts/0 is always used for LAT only. Or how can I manage to create the links for any LAT device to fixed and free linux devices. 2. How can I tell the linux printing system to use a LAT device for printing. Thanks for help. Erwin |

That's an interesting one I havn't seen. Apart from when the .fal directory is
created by one user and a different user tries to write files into it and can't
because the permissions are insufficient. The thing to do is to run fal with -vv
and see if it issues the "creating metafile reecord" message.

The format is documented in the source code (!) as follows:
// Structure of the metafile
class metafile_data
{
public:
unsigned short version;
unsigned short rfm;
unsigned int rat;
unsigned short mrs;
unsigned short lrl;
// For variable-length records with no carriage control:
unsigned int num_records;
unsigned short *records; // This is really written after the structure
static const int METAFILE_VERSION = 2;
};
FDL is a nice idea but it would take me a long time to write a parser for that
and I just don't have the spare time to do it. If you do, please submit a patch
I'd love to incorporate it.

I have had to do this when copying from VMS to VMS. It depends on a lot of
things. Linux is not VMS and doesn't know all the things VMS does. I've
documented this in the FAQ too.

I'm not sure about that. there's nothing in the DAP spec that implies a 2 gig
file limit AFAICT. looking at the libdap source code I have used longs where
loff_t would probably be more appropriate and I suspect it may not be built
with __LARGEFILE64.
For sequential file (eg savesets) you should be able to make fal cope with large
files by rebuilding with -D__USE_LARGEFILE64. operations that do RFA access will
need a small amount of work in the library(and maybe it's callers) to cope with
long offsets. If you do this remember to add it to CXXFLAGS and CFLAGS in
Makefile.common and rebuild everything (and reinstall the libraries).
Also, make sure you are using a Linux filesystem that can cope with large files.
ext2 used not to be able to (reiser can).
My problem here is lack of VMS machines with >2G of free disk space so anyone
elses testing is appreciated.

I've run into some problems using linux-decnet fal with OpenVMS BACKUP:
1. I set up linux-decnet to start fal with the -m option (create/read =
record attribute metafiles in a .fal subdirectory). It is not reliable. =
I have files that were created by fal, but there is no corresponding =
metafile entry. I changed the fal startup to use -ae.
I'd like to see the metafile format documented (on the fal man page?). =
Better yet, I'd like fal to use an .fdl metafile directory with ASCII =
.fdl files that conform to the OpenVMS FDL specification. (This is the =
way Process Software's MultiNet NFS client stores OpenVMS file =
attributes.) That way, I can change the file attributes with a text =
editor, if necessary.
2. fal does not negotiate the buffer size like OpenVMS FAL does. =
Sometimes remote BACKUP operations work; other times they do not. I had =
to use SET RMS_DEFAULT /NETWORK_BLOCK_COUNT=3D64 on OpenVMS to eliminate =
the failures ("%BACKUP-E-READERRS, excessive error rate reading ...").
3. fal appears to limit the file size to 2 GB. (This may also be true =
of OpenVMS FAL as well; I don't know.) The reason I installed =
linux-decnet was to use my Linux system as an online repository for =
OpenVMS BACKUP save sets. I originally tried to use NFS, but the TCP/IP =
package on our OpenVMS systems only supports NFS version 2 =
clients/servers, which limits file sizes to 2 GB. It appears =
linux-decnet's fal has the same limitation (because of the DAP =
protocol?). If this is truly a restriction of the DAP protocol, that's =
a killer for us -- we won't be able to use linux-decnet.
Comments? Suggestions?

Hold the red button depressed while powering on and booting the decserver. After that, when you connect with moprc and get a "#", type in "access" and then type "SET PRIV" and "system". You only need the # prompt password for moprc. If you connect a terminal to any serial port of the decserver you will 'get in' direct. If you connect a terminal to the first port you can se various startup messages while booting. > any pointers? http://www.ludd.luth.se/%7ebear/project/decserver/decserver.html sorry this page is in swedish but follow the two links on the bottom of the page. -- /Mats Magnusson, ma...@pl... |

Hi Folks, I'm trying to setup a DECserver 200 and have hit a few problems. I'm using debian stable and have downloaded and compiled the latest latd and mopd. I've got mopd up and running and the DECserver booting off of it correctly downloading the requested file. When I try and use moprc it connects to the DS200 and I get a # prompt after a bell. I get no echo for anything I type and after 4 or 5 times hitting enter and optionally trying to enter commands blind, it appears to hang? any pointers? keep up the good work, I know this kit is obsolete, but I think it's very impressive to get Linux to interoperate with it. -Cheers Max. -- Are you the police?
