In theory Debian should be the easiest to get working with DECnet - if you can run "testing" or "unstable" that is. All you need to do is make sure you are running a 2.4 kernel and type # apt-get install dnet-progs answer a couple of questions and reboot(to set the MAC address). My interest in this is that I am also the Debian maintainer of the DECnet packages but that's not a financial one. Now I'll let the real users of DECnet have their say... Patrick |

Hello from Gregg C Levine Now I am trying to get a handle on which distribution everyone favors. Can each person who has subscribed to this list, confirm which one they have chosen? But not necessarily why. I grok that not everyone out there is using Slackware, as I am, but I would like to know what the preferences are for distributions. If they wish to do so, please do that off list, as I want to keep the list free from those responses. ------------------- Gregg C Levine han...@wo... ------------------------------------------------------------ "The Force will be with you...Always." It's kind of like riding a bicycle - once you learn... I think that
the manual for
writing VMSINSTAL kits is on-line at DEC, er, COMPAQ, I mean HP...
If you get stuck, let me know - I've done my share of kits in my
time.

I've uploaded a new symbiont.zip that has that corrected and also has the object files and BUILD_ALPHA and BUILD_VAX command procedures so you should be able to get it to work on any version of VMS. I'll think about doing a VMSINSTAL kit but I haven't done one for years so it may take some time. patrick |

The 2.2 patches may work with 2.2.18, to be honest I haven't tested them on that version. If the patch applies OK then I imagine it will run OK. Linux 2.4 is really the recommended kernel for running DECnet though, there has been no development on the 2.2 version for some time and the DECnet code in 2.4 is more stable and secure for that reason. patrick |

Hello from Gregg C Levine I certainly hope I am posting this in the right list. I have a Linux System which is running 2.2.18, but not the 2.2.16 kernel. Do I need the patch for this version of the kernel? But I can run the 2.4.x series of the kernels here. The system is running the Slackware distribution. And it is on a Pentium 100. ------------------- Gregg C Levine dr...@wo... ------------------------------------------------------------ "The Force will be with you...Always." Patrick,
From past experience, they probably won't run. But, if you post the
object
files or create a VMSINSTAL kit, they should link and then run OK.

I've uploaded a new symbiont.zip that has both VAX and Alpha binaries in it now. I still can't guarantee that it will run on VMS 5.5 as they were both compiled on 7.2 but it's worth a go. patrick |

I haven't got round to packaging the VAX one yet. I did build it for VAX and then the disk drive on my VAX died so I don't have it any more! You can either build it yourself from source or wait a couple of days and I'll geta VAX binary uploaded. To build it from source you'll need a C compiler and MMS or MMK (mmk is freeware), just unpack the sources and type $ MMK/IGNORE=WARNINGS patrick |

Hi, since our DECserver is broken, I have the idea to let my Linux DECnet Node act as a Printserver. All Printjobs from the VAX should be directed to the Linux Node. I thought Symbiont could be the right Tool and downloaded it. I copied linuxsym.exe to the vax (VMS 5.5) and get this output: $dir/prot/size sys$system:linuxsym.exe Directory SYS$COMMON:[SYSEXE] LINUXSYM.EXE;1 61 (RWED,RWED,RE, ) Total of 1 file, 61 blocks. $init/queue/start/proc=linuxsym/on=brian NEWQUEUE %IMGACT-F-IMG_SIZ, image header decriptor length is invalid What's wrong here? Thanks in advance, Raimund -- Life's too short to read boring signatures |

Hi, The initial public version of the DECnet routing message grabulator is on my kernel patches page: http://www.chygwyn.com/~steve/kpatch/ Its designed for use with Patrick's DECnet routing software (or indeed any other routing software that needs to get DECnet routing messages). Its still alpha test code, so its there more for interest than actual use at the moment. The plan is to integrate it into 2.5 at some future date when the userland software is ready and further debugging has been done on the kernel DECnet routing software. One of the main problems keeping the DECnet module from coping with module unloads was the slab destruction problem. This has been fixed in recent kernels, so I hope that shortly I'll be able to find the time to make DECnet take advantage of that and get module unloading working again. In the mean time (and I know I've been rather distracted of late so apologies if I've missed anything) if there are any outstanding bugs or issues in the existing kernel code (particularly in 2.4) then please send them in my direction. Thanks, Steve. |

I've uploaded LATD 1.14 to sourceforge.
The main change is the rewrite of the ethernet flow control layer which should
be much more reliable than the last but I'd like people to test it if they can.
The changelog reads as follows:
* gcc-3.0 compilation fixes in the new bits
* Rewritten ethernet flow control
* Increase moprc timeout a little.
* Don't try to process zero-length packets
* Include lat.html documentation
* Tested on DECserver 700
* Send "no more slots on circuit" message when closing a connection for
that reason. Fixes reconnection on DECserver 90L+
I'd like to thank Denis Komissarov for chasing and reporting a lot of bugs
(there's one still outstanding I'm afraid) and I should have thanked
Rob Davies two releases ago for the DECserver 90L+s without which latd would
not be working on those devices.
This is still a sort of beta release (though, to be honest, it's probably better
than 1.03!) when I've decided all the new code is stable I'll probably call it
1.5 or something.
Get it from:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/linux-decnet/latd-1.14.tar.gz

I suspect that the cisco doesn't implement the MIRROR object. Try this from a VMS machine: $ MCR NCP LOOP NODE <cisco> And see if it gives any error - If it does then that's why dnping doesn't work. If that does work then I'd like to see a tcpdump of the network traffic please. patrick |

Hello, I have installed DECnet package to Linux. Everything works fine, I can dnping to VAX machines in the network but I cannot dnping to Cisco Routers (supporting DECnet). If I try to dnping to Cisco router I will get the err. message: "Transport Endpoint Is Not Connected" Does anybody know where can be the problem?=20 Thank you in advance, Robert Lhota P.S.: Decnet ping LinuxDECNET -> VAX works fine, decnet ping CiscoRouter -> CiscoRouter works fine, CiscoRouter -> VAX works also fine, only LinuxDECNET <-> CiscoRouter makes the problem. |

I don't normally post single, minor bug fixes to the list but this is such a
long-standing one that's annoyed to many people I though it was worthwhile.
ctermd now recognises the DEL key !!!
The fix is in CVS and will be part of a 2.19 release. I don't have a date for
this release cos there are some other things that are being dealt with, so
for the impatient the patch is below:
