Re: Back-up VMS LinuxOpenVMS documentation is available online from = DEC/Compaq/HP. I have found it is simplest to first go to = http://www.compaq.com/openvms. This will redirect you to an HP web site = (there is no http://www.hp.com/openvms). From there, you can access a = link to the OpenVMS documentation home page. There is a search window. = Enter BACKUP, and you will be given a list of many documents that = contain a reference to OpenVMS BACKUP. Choose the link to the OpenVMS = System Manager's Manual. Chapter 10 is Using BACKUP. Start there. Larry Baker US Geological Survey ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Daniel Carrere=20 To: Larry Baker=20 Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 11:22 PM Subject: Re: [Linux-decnet-user] Re: Back-up VMS Linux HI, Larry,=20 Thank-you very much for these informations:=20 it is possible, and where I can find the other informations.=20 If I succeed, I'll tell you=20 Daniel=20 Le mar 27/05/2003 =E0 20:30, Larry Baker a =E9crit :=20 >From any OpenVMS system, you can type HELP BACKUP to obtain = detailed information on the BACKUP program options. Some options only = apply to tapes (like /REWIND or /NOREWIND), some only apply to the input = disk (like /IGNORE=3DINTERLOCK), some only apply to the output disk for = disk-to-disk or restore operations (like /OWNER=3DORIGINAL).=20 I always ANALYZE/DISK before doing a backup and correct any problems = with the file system first. I also only make backups on my system when = no one else is logged on. The system manager of our timesharing OpenVMS = system does backups while people are logged on, which means he has to = use /IGNORE=3DINTERLOCK.=20 To make an image backup across DECnet of any disk but the system = (boot) disk, the command is BACKUP/VERIFY/IMAGE disk-name: = DECnet-node::remote-disk:[remote-directory]save-set-name/SAVE_SET. This = assumes you use DECnet proxy logins. If not, you have to replace = DECnet-node:: with DECnet-node"userid password"::. The disk must be = mounted, but it can be mounted /NOWRITE.=20 To make an image backup of the system disk, change disk-name: to = system-disk-name:/IGNORE=3DINTERLOCK.=20 I haven't done any OpenVMS backups of my disks yet using = linux-decnet; just the test of my personal directory tree. So, my = instructions may have to be slightly modified. Also, my systems are = dedicated for my projects, so I only do full backups. The system = manager of our timesharing OpenVMS system does both full and incremental = backups.=20 I set up the fal server on my Red Hat 8.0 Linux system to use the = .fal hidden directory to store OpenVMS file attribute information: in = /etc/dnetd.conf, change the fal command to fal -m, then (re)start = decnet. In that case, I don't have to use any special file name suffix = for a BACKUP save set. There are other options for fal which may affect = you. Look them over and try it out first. And, ALWAYS use the /VERIFY = option!=20 To use NFS for backups, it is the same as a local disk-to-disk = backup. Your NFS client package on OpenVMS should create a mounted disk = volume, which you can use like any other local disk, except for the = differences between Unix and OpenVMS file system semantics, such as = version numbers, RMS, etc. Look at the manuals that came with your = TCP/IP package for that kind of information. We use Process Software = MultiNet V4.4; OpenVMS usually comes bundled with TCP/IP Services for = OpenVMS.=20 OpenVMS save sets are not compressed, and have extra XOR blocks = added for data recovery. So, a 2 GB disk will take more than 2 GB to = backup. If your NFS client/server combination supports only NFS version = 2, you will not be able to create a save set larger than 2 GB. You'll = have to try it with your setup to see what works. And, ALWAYS use the = /VERIFY option!=20 Larry Baker=20 US Geological Survey=20 on 5/26/03 12:57 AM, Daniel Carrere at d.c...@me... = wrote:=20 Hi Larry,=20 Sorry for my question, I didn't see the other message.=20 I wanted to replace my tapes by an IDE disk on a Linux box;=20 Here is my command to save on tape=20 $ BACKUP/IMAGE /NOREWIND /LOG /IGNORE=3D(INTERLOCK,LABEL) DKA200: = MKA600:DKA200.BCK /SAVE_SET /MEDIA_FORMAT=3DCOMPACTION /OWNER=3DORIGIN = As I am not a VMS programer, how can modify it to save by NFS ( my = disk is only 2 Go Vas 3100-95 )=20 Thanks a lot,=20 Daniel=20 --=20 |

Block size is a link layer concept based upon (for broadcast circuits) the smallest block size advertised in a hello message on that link. We don't actually take too much notice of that because most messages we send are either smaller than the minimum guarenteed size or they are dealt with by the other mechanism. The block size which is advertised in hello messages from Linux boxes is based on knowledge of what kind of device is in use for Linux 2.4 and for Linux 2.5 its based on the device mtu (which makes more sense to me). The other mechanism is a per-logical link negotiation in which a size is offered by the connecting end of the link and also by the accepting end of the link and then the smaller of the two sizes is used by both ends. In Linux 2.5 the offered size is based upon the block size of the device or the ADVMSS paramater which can be specified by iproute2 (note this dosn't affect ip as well). Fragmentation in DECnet is very very basic. Unfortunately, due to the fact that whole packets only are acknowleged, if you send a packet thats too large there is very little that you can do. You can't cut it down and send only part of it because when the acknowledgement comes back you won't know if its for the original large packet (which eventually made it though some network path or other) or whether its the new smaller packet thats being acknowledged. Its a pity, but at the moment, I don't see any way around that. In fact since there is no equivalent of an ICMP frag needed, you can only guess that the reason a packet can't get to a destination is due to an mtu problem (well unless you are tunneling over IP and the tunnel MTU drops for example, but then you can use IP fragmentation to get around it). I'm going to leave well enough alone. We only use the small 576-byte buffer size for DECnet traffic. I don't want IP traffic using such small packets, so I don't want to set the MTU for the device to be that small. Until I see a problem with dropped DECnet packets, I'm going to assume DECnet packet disassembly/reassembly is working fine. When you say there is a negotiation of sizes in the "connection" start up, what do you mean? In DECnet, there's lines, circuits, and logical links. Logical links are what processes set up and tear down, and I assume that's where DECnet messages are segmented and handed down as packets to the circuit layer, and then to the line (physical) layer (except Ethernet bundles the line layer and the circuit layer into one). In IP, I thought the MTU applied to the physical layer, and segmentation in an IP network occurs lower in the protocol stack. Does linux-decnet negotiate buffer sizes each time a logical link is established, or when the circuit comes up? If the latter, I assume it is negotiating buffer sizes as part of router discovery. Hi, You shouldn't have to set it. It will use the smaller of the allowable sizes negotiated in the connection start up and the connection start up messages are small enough that its never a problem for them. You can however use iproute2 to restrict the buffer size on a per route basis, or just set the MTU of the device to something smaller. Bear in mind that its not a good idea to make adjustments when connections are in progress :-) Its a new feature in 2.5 that DECnet makes use of the MTU as it ought to, so this isn't working in 2.4 yet (neither I suspect will the use of iproute2 for setting the mss), Steve. > > This is a multi-part message in MIME format. > > ------=_NextPart_000_001F_01C32451.E7D89E70 > Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable > Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="iso-8859-1" > > We still have an LSI-11 in our DECnet, so we have to SET EXECUTOR BUFFER = > SIZE 576 (the maximum DECnet buffer size on RSX-11M-Plus) on our OpenVMS = > systems. We still have an LSI-11 in our DECnet, so we have to SET EXECUTOR BUFFER = SIZE 576 (the maximum DECnet buffer size on RSX-11M-Plus) on our OpenVMS = systems. (Normally you would like to use 1498 on Ethernet circuits.) = What is the equivalent setting for linux-decnet? I.e., how do you set = the DECnet buffer size in linux-decnet? |

From any OpenVMS system, you can type HELP BACKUP to obtain detailed information on the BACKUP program options. Some options only apply to tapes (like /REWIND or /NOREWIND), some only apply to the input disk (like /IGNORE=INTERLOCK), some only apply to the output disk for disk-to-disk or restore operations (like /OWNER=ORIGINAL). I always ANALYZE/DISK before doing a backup and correct any problems with the file system first. I also only make backups on my system when no one else is logged on. The system manager of our timesharing OpenVMS system does backups while people are logged on, which means he has to use /IGNORE=INTERLOCK. To make an image backup across DECnet of any disk but the system (boot) disk, the command is BACKUP/VERIFY/IMAGE disk-name: DECnet-node::remote-disk:[remote-directory]save-set-name/SAVE_SET. This assumes you use DECnet proxy logins. If not, you have to replace DECnet-node:: with DECnet-node"userid password"::. The disk must be mounted, but it can be mounted /NOWRITE. To make an image backup of the system disk, change disk-name: to system-disk-name:/IGNORE=INTERLOCK. I haven't done any OpenVMS backups of my disks yet using linux-decnet; just the test of my personal directory tree. So, my instructions may have to be slightly modified. Also, my systems are dedicated for my projects, so I only do full backups. The system manager of our timesharing OpenVMS system does both full and incremental backups. I set up the fal server on my Red Hat 8.0 Linux system to use the .fal hidden directory to store OpenVMS file attribute information: in /etc/dnetd.conf, change the fal command to fal -m, then (re)start decnet. In that case, I don't have to use any special file name suffix for a BACKUP save set. There are other options for fal which may affect you. Look them over and try it out first. And, ALWAYS use the /VERIFY option! To use NFS for backups, it is the same as a local disk-to-disk backup. Your NFS client package on OpenVMS should create a mounted disk volume, which you can use like any other local disk, except for the differences between Unix and OpenVMS file system semantics, such as version numbers, RMS, etc. Look at the manuals that came with your TCP/IP package for that kind of information. We use Process Software MultiNet V4.4; OpenVMS usually comes bundled with TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS. OpenVMS save sets are not compressed, and have extra XOR blocks added for data recovery. So, a 2 GB disk will take more than 2 GB to backup. If your NFS client/server combination supports only NFS version 2, you will not be able to create a save set larger than 2 GB. You'll have to try it with your setup to see what works. And, ALWAYS use the /VERIFY option! Currently Linux DECnet only supports flow control on the outgoing side of connections (as required by the spec) and not for the incoming side (since most Linux DECnet boxes are much faster than the machines they are talking to) and since thats optional. It certainly would be interesting to see what makes the performance so good in this case. DECnet doesn't do nagle (yet) for example but its on the list of things to do. Also I very much suspect that as soon as there is any packet loss on the link, DECnet will perform much worse than IP since the IP stack has a whole bunch of tricks up its sleeve to keep data moving in cases of mild packet loss. Next on my list is to sort out dn_recvmsg() and dn_sendmsg() to add support for nagle and zerocopy. This will require a change in the way that packets are queued for transmission. Also on the receive side, I need to make sure that I've understood the requirements for MSG_PEEK correctly - its not as simple as it looks at first glance, Steve. |

I ran some crude timing tests on our network to compare the speed of = OpenVMS Backup using several combinations, including linux-decnet. The reason I installed linux-decnet is because I bought 3 Maxtor 250 GB = IDE disks and NFS exported them from a Red Hat 8.0 Linux box. I = expected to backup our Unix, Linux, NetApp NAS, and OpenVMS systems = using NFS instead of tapes (we've had our fill of tapes). = Unfortunately, the NFS client implementation on our OpenVMS systems, = Process Software MultiNet V4.4, supports only NFS version 2, not version = 3. Version 2 limits the NFS file size to 2 GB, so full disk backups = from OpenVMS to the NFS disks failed when the save sets hit 2 GB. I'm = hoping linux-decnet can get around this limitation until the MultiNet = NFS client supports version 3. I'm pretty satisfied with the performance of linux-decnet. My test = results are given below. Larry Baker US Geological Survey I ran an OpenVMS BACKUP/VERIFY of my personal directory tree on our = AlphaServer 100A 333 MHz with internal 7200 RPM SCSI disks and = 100-TX/FDX Ethernet. My directory tree is just over 240 MB. I did this = during the middle of the day, not during any particularly quiet time. Local disk-to-disk: SAMOA (333 MHz Alpha, 100-TX/FDX Ethernet) = PUB:[BAKER...] (7200 RPM SCSI) to BAR:[BAKER]PUB.BCK (7200 RPM SCSI), = ~18 min. Local disk-to-NFS disk: SAMOA PUB:[BAKER...] to WAVE:[BAKER]PUB.BCK = (Network Appliance F720, Gigabit Fiber Ethernet, 10000 RPM Fiber = Channel), ~5 min. Local disk-to-DECnet disk: SAMOA PUB:[BAKER...] to BOREGO::PUB.BCK (233 = MHz Alpha, 100-TX/FDX Ethernet, 7200 RPM SCSI), ~8 min. Local disk-to-DECnet disk: SAMOA PUB:[BAKER...] to = WAVLET::SYSDISK:[BACKUP.OPENVMS]BAKER.BCK (400 MHz PII RH8.0 Linux, = 100-TX/FDX Ethernet, 5400 RPM IDE), ~12 min. |

I installed my Red Hat 8.0 Linux system as a Server, i.e., I selected =
the Server installation option. I did not have to do anything special =
with Red Hat after that, except for "MACADDR=3D..." and "depmod -a", as =
I wrote. Before I installed DECnet, I read in the linux-decnet FAQ that =
the 2.4 kernels had DECnet built in. I found that the =
/boot/config-2.4.* files on my system already had the DECNET parameters =
defined, so I assumed I'd be OK. Take a look at your /boot/config* =
files. As far as loading the decnet.o module, I think that happens =
automatically on-demand, provided the kernel can find it (hence, the =
necessity for the "depmod -a" command).

My Red Hat 8.0 Linux DECnet installation seems to work now (with one =
minor annoyance, see below). I used the information in the online HTML =
man pages and FAQs as a reference. The steps I followed were:
Download dnprogs-2.23-1.i386.rpm to /usr/local/src
Install the dnprogs RPM:
# cd /usr/local/src
# rpm -Uvh dnprogs-2.23-1.i386.rpm
Ignore the messages about not being user patrick
Answer the questions to define the DECnet network
Optionally configure the DECnet hosts file:
# vi /etc/decnet.conf
Add more hosts, etc.
Optionally configure the DECnet objects file:
# vi /etc/dnetd.conf
Comment out unneeded objects, etc.
Optionally configure the DECnet proxy file:
# vi /etc/decnet.proxy
Add DECnet->Linux userid mappings, etc.
Configure the DECnet startup/shutdown script:
# vi /etc/init.d/decnet
Change "prefix=3D/usr/local" to "prefix=3D/usr" (the rpm =
installation
puts the executables in /usr..., not /usr/local...)
Configure the Ethernet MAC address:
16-bit DECnet address =3D ( area-no. * 1024 ) + node-no.
Convert 16-bit DECnet address to hex
Swap hex bytes and append to AA:00:04:00
For example, 63.171 =3D ( 63 * 1024 ) + 171 =3D 64683 =3D FCAB
MAC address for 63.171 =3D AA:00:04:00:AB:FC
# vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
Add a line specifying the MAC address using the MACADDR keyword
# DECnet host address 63.171
MACADDR=3DAA:00:04:00:AB:FC
On my system, I also made ifcfg-eth0 executable
# chmod +x /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
Update the kernel module database:
# depmod -a
Enable the DECnet service:
# chkconfig --level 345 decnet on
Reboot
# reboot
Try something
# dnping local-host
# dnping remote-host
On my Red Hat 8.0 system, after DECnet is enabled, "ifconfig" no =
longer works without an explicit interface argument. This is a minor =
annoyance, which I ignore.
