What about dapfs? Is that still an active project? I installed the kernel
patch (2.4.1) and my 2.4.19 kernel and it didnt go smoothly so i edited a
file (fs.h maybe) myself after looking through the .rej file to see what
was diferent and it seemed to be ok after that. The kernel compiled but
there was a linker error at the end, an undefined dapfs type i think. If
you think you could help then i'll get the exact message.

It just occurred to me that this is actually impossible because AFAIK there
is
no "create-directory" function in DAP ! If anyone knows differently then
/please/ tell me.

I have written about strange decnet.o behaivour - so when I copiled it into kernel all became good. But now I see KERNEL: assertion (dev->dn_ptr==NULL) failed at dev.c(2447) kernel: Freeing alive device cf14d400, eth1 in messages after decnet started. Can I apply some bugfix patch for my 2.4.18 kernel ? Thanks, Eugene. |

Hi, displaying DECwindows Applikations via DECnet on my Linuxbox (Debian 3.0, XFree86-4.1) is no problem. To direct the output to a NT PC (X-Server: Xcursion) is also no problem. But how can I display a DECterm in a running Xnest Window (Xnest from Linux, displayed on NT)? The DECterm (and other DECwindows Apps) comes from a MicroVAX (VMS 5.5). Is there an equivalent to :1 (p.e. "192.168.1.1 :1") in the "set display/create/node=..." command? regards, Raimund |

What I tend to do is to create a saveset on the VMS side and copy that to/from Linux as one file. To be honest it will need some fairly fancy coding to get fal & dncopy to understand and use VMS wildcards correctly and translate them into something Linux can use. dndel will /probably/ work for recursive deletions if you use the VMS [...] syntax because it doesn't actually care about any Linux equivalent filename. patrick |

Hi, As you know we are trying to use a kernel without TCPIP support. We = succeed to make this kernel working with Decnet. Now I'm trying to use lat. When I use lat on a native linux kernel = (included TCPIP level) I succeed to use a lat port. However, when I try = to use it with a kernel recompiled without TCPIP support, latd is = correctly started but it does'nt work. After investigations, I notice = that interface are not detected with this kernel.=20 When I show the status of the server with the latcp -d command which = produces output something like this: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Node Name: PC2 LAT Protocol Version: 5.2 Node State: On LATD Version: 1.12 Node Ident: A Linux box Service Responder : Disabled Interfaces : =20 Circuit Timer (msec): 80 Keepalive Timer (sec): 20 Retransmit Limit: 20 Multicast Timer (sec): 30 User Groups: 0 Service Groups: 0 Service Name Status Rating Identification PC2 Enabled 12 D =20 Port Node Service Remote Port = Queued /dev/lat/lta101 MPS_1F29CD PORT_1 = Yes=20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------= As you can see, no interface are reported. With the kernel included = TPCPIP, We get : -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ... Service Responder : Disabled Interfaces : eth0=20 Circuit Timer (msec): 80 Keepalive Timer (sec): 20 ... -------------------------------------------------------------------------= So I suppose that subroutines/functions used in interfaces.cc (or = interfaces-linux.cc) needs to have TCPIP installed. Is there a way to = make it working ? (modification of the interface detection function to = do not used TCPIP functionnalities, or which TCPIP module is necessary = to compile in the kernel). It is strange that DECnet recognizes = interfaces without TCPIP, but not LAT. Thanks Mohcine Bassir |

Module unloading for DECnet has been disabed for a while due to the complications of cleaning everything up. It is actually much easier these days, so perhaps it might be reenabled at some stage, but there used to be certain things which it was not possible to clean up properly in the module exit code, Steve. |

^^^^^^^^^ These ioctls are the interesting ones.
They can only make sense though if we know which fd they are being called
on and I don't see any socket(...) = 5 above so I can't tell what is going
wrong here. I would expect that the ioctl is being done on a socket but
its just possible that its the result of open() or dup(), etc. in case you don't
find a socket() = 5 in the trace anywhere.
Steve.

Sirry about typing errors, it should be: " (I mean original 2.4.18 from kernel.org). SIOCGIFCONF is off." |

2 Steve.
You are right about vndor supplied kernel, but I`ve compared - decnet source
code is equal to original one (I mean. SIOCGIFCONF is off.
strace of ifconfig is in the bottom of message.
2 Patric.
decnet is copiled as module, I run "modprobe decnet". After module loading
appear /proc/net/decnet* files. In the messages appear:
kernel: NET4: DECnet for Linux: V.2.4.15-pre5s (C) 1995-2001 Linux DECnet
Project
Team
kernel: DECnet: Routing cache hash table of 1024 buckets, 8Kbytes
But then, after 2 minutes, appears:
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
By the way, Samba dies too.
strace ifconfig:

That bug was fixed after 2.4.8 but I can't remember the exact number I'm afraid. certainly 2.4.19 doesn't have that bug. patrick |

Here are the stats
VMS - > Linux (Command sent from Linux) 505856 bytes in 4.44
seconds: 111.26K/s
Linux -> VMS (Command sent from Linux) 505856 bytes in 2972.ss
Seconds: 0.17 K.s
I expect i will have to upgrade the kernel as mandrake 8.1 is getting old
now (kernel 2.4.8) and compile everything from source (not a nice prospect
as the PC is a P133 with 24mb ram :o)
Anyway, any help appreciated

Hi
I just started playing with decnet 2 days ago, mainly as a way to
show how linux can be useful in the workplace (one long standing problem we
have is file transfers from Windows->VMS)
Ive got everything set up, and the programs are working (Minimal-ish
install of mandrake 8.1 and dnprogs 2.19 rpm) i can ping/sethost etc, but
when i copy a file from vms->linux it took about 5 seconds, but copying it
back, last time i checked it was about half an hour and still not finished.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Help, please. I hate to state the obvious but is the module for eth1 loaded (or compiled into the kernel) ? Can you see it initialised at boot time? Have a look in /proc/net/dev to see if exists there. patrick |
