Hi everyone, I've just had a bug posted by Debian about a conflict with the name of libdap.so. Apparently there is another project out there that also uses this name. I chose libdap because it matches the name of the DAP protocol it implements but thinking about it now, perhaps it should have had dnet in front it of to avoid such namespace clashes. So, I propose to rename this library to libdnet_dap (which makes it consistent with libdnet_daemon I suppose!). I don't honestly see any problem here, the only users of libdap are the DECnet tools - as fas as I know, if you know differently please speak up - and I can fix those easily. The only potential problem might be with people who are using librms, which has an implicit link to libdap, but I suspect that's a very small number of developmentally-capable users. I could be called for caving in to a request here; I suppose I probably have the precedence of time on my side (libdap dates from 1998) but the relative obscurity of the project mitigates against it. The other thing that is against me is that I did not split libdap into its own package within Debian, as is usual, instead I left it as part of libdnet. So anyone searching for libdap maybe would not have found it. Does anyone have any opinons on this ? Chrissie |

Hello All, I had a closer look at the network packets that come from the vax. I have seen that e.g. the editor uses 7bit Escape sequences (e.g. 0x19+"[" for CSI), while the test program sends 8bit sequences (e.g. 0x9b for CSI). This seems to be hardcoded somewhere, so I cannot change it. This leaves me some options: - can I build a "filter" that replaces the 8bit chars by their 7bit counterparts before they are interpreted by xterm or rxvt? - for xterm, I found the "+u8" option, which seems to work. Unfortunately, after pressing CTRL-Y, things seem to go wrong (I have to press keys to make the next line of output visible). CTRL-Y works in rxvt, but there I don`t know how to set keymappings, and how to make it interpret 8bit control sequences. Any hints, anyone? Hello All, and thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, neither $ SET TERMINAL/VT100 nor $ SET TERMINAL/INQUIRE seems to make a difference. I forgot to test these setttings on the microvax machine which gives me strange output even under plain vms. I'll try and tell you about it. I am using xterm, and found a place where I could steal the key mappings from. The funny thing is that the editor seems to work well. By the way, is there a possibility to restrict the new keymapping to my dnsprogs sessions, because they are not very good for use in linux!? I am not sure wether the broken output is due to the program not knowing what kind of emulation to send or because xterm doesn`t understand. I doubt the latter, so the problem might be to tell the program what to send. concerning the putty suggestion: Can I use putty over a serial line? I thought I'd have to have a tcpip connection for that. Greetings, Til Unterwegs über Ihre E-Mails informiert mit der kostenlosen SMS-Benachrichtigung von o2! Try $ SET TERMINAL/VT100 or $ SET TERMINAL/INQUIRE before start the application and see if that helps. You might also try different 'terminal's such as xterm, rxvt etc. I've found rxvt to be very good when talking to VAXes. Chrissie |

Minicom has very poor DEC terminal emulation. I suggest you download putty for your desired platform. Putty also sends DEL when you press "Backspace". Other emulations send Ctrl-H, which returns you to the beginning of the line in VMS. -- Stan Quayle Quayle Consulting Inc. ---------- Stanley F. Quayle, P.E. Betreff: New to list - coming with some questions..
Hi, I tried to post this last week, but it seems it got stuck somewhere, so again:
Hello,
I am coming from the windows world, with some (but limited) linux experiences a couple of years ago. In my new workplace, I am now confronted with the wondrous world of VMS - as it was 20 years ago: orange terminals and all the stuff that I have seen when I was really little. Therefore I was very delighted that
this project exists and I set forth to hook up and install a linux pc with the vms machines. (I tried to put that down in the wiki a couple of days ago: Installation on SUSE 11.1. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the links to work).
It works pretty well, but of course there is still some room for more understanding from my side, which I hope you can provide :)
My basic task is to develop small software projects for the 2 vax machines (in pascal).
So now I have a network of three nodes:
S15, a microvax II running VMS V4.6
S1650, a vaxstation 3200 running VMS V5.5-2
and my now trusted PC1, with SUSE 11.1 and dnprogs.
dncopy and dndir work well, but dnlogin gives me some trouble: it seems as if the type of terminal is not really understood by the vaxes. For example, when I run one of the testprograms, i get to see the escape sequences which don´t seem to be interpreted correctly:
?r?2J?3;1H S15/S1650 software version 9
%S15_Monitor : Starting on head 1 "DUA1:[S15LIB.RAM.4S281632]TEST.EXE;1"
%S15_Monitor : No Test on Head 2
%S15_Monitor : SIMUL WITHOUT creating PATTERN SIMULATION FILE
%S15_Monitor : Spawning _RTA2s15d0
_RTA2head1,NO_OIC1
Terminal is :?62;1"p?>c Unknown
- instead of one line of stars, and then a line saying "HEAD SELECTED= 1", and then a menu line with the first characters inverted, I get the following:
2J1;18r19;1H***************************************
***************************************************************
******************************24;1HJ20;1HJ22;1HJTEST HEAD SELECTED= 125;1HJ24;1HJ7mENTER 0m 7mGmO 7mDmEBUG 7mHmEAD 7mCmLASS 7mQmUIT 7mEmXIT
when I do the same of the serial line with minicom, everything seems ok (except for some noise that gets transmitted and makes my screen shake!!)
What happens here and what can I do about it?
I guess this is enough for today, although there are still a lot of other questions, like if it was possible to mount not only my home dir with daps (and if that would really help me ;).
Maybe you can be so kind and give me some hints on what to do. I would also be glad if you knew some reading material, as I am not too lazy to read.
Whishing you all a very beautiful week-end.

Til
