Well, I tried it and it works. It's almost certainly wrong so there's not much
chance of that patch getting into the kernel but I've had an ico running from a
fairly fast Alpha down a 100Meg ethernet for some time now and it's fine.
More investigation will follow when I get back. In the meantime the workaround
patch is:

I think I know what's happening but I'm not sure how to stop it. The X server has a SIGALRM timer that goes off every so often. If it's reading from the DECnet socket when that happens DECnet, returns -ERESTARTSYS which the Xserver interprets as an error and closes the socket. I've tried changing this to -EINTR and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Oddly, if I strace the Xserver running ico from a Unix box it never seems to return -EINTR, only data and -EAGAIN. If you're feeling brave you might like to change the ERESTARTSYS to an EAGAIN and see what happens ;-) patrick |

OK, here's the offer. If anyone using DECnet on a distribution can tell me what it was they needed to do to get it working and in which config files, I'll consolidate them all into a single HOWTO. Debian I can manage cos I wrote all that stuff anyway (plus, it's trivial!) - I have some idea of RedHat 7 and SuSE 7 (though only the SuSE box is a real machine rather than a VMware session) but any extra tidbits people have will be appreciated. Send them to me or the list and I'll make a start when I get back from summer school early August. Personally I'd rather spend the time coding but this seems to be something that is really needed so I'm happy to help. If I get no responses then there will be no HOWTO - this a community project :-) patrick |

Hi, I have install dnprogs-2.17-1 on my distrib Mandrake 8.1 with XFree86-4.1 for decnet. Now, we succeed to log with the "sethost" command from the Linux PC to = the Alphaserver 1000/233 (Open VMS 6.1, DECnet Plus V6.3 eco15, X/Motif = 1.2-3, 2 Ethernet Cards (DE435, DE422) only one is enabled to work with = DECnet Phase IV) I also succeed to launch X applications on the Alphaserver (like = DECterm) and displayed them on the PC over DECnet. These X application = seems to work correctly. But for some X application, I got the following error message on the = terminal from which i have launch the application : ------------------------------------------------------------------ XIO: fatal IO error 65535 on X server "_WSA15" after 19253 request (7 known processed) with 0 events remaining. %LIB-F-IOERROR, xlib io error ......network partner disconnected logical link. ------------------------------------------------------------------ When i launch ico application furnished in decw$examples directory (or = some other application written by me)on Alpha server and dislayed on PC = linux, it is running for a while (randomly between 1 to 5 seconds) and = then crashes , giving the error message. I can make these following statements: - This crash happens more quickly if the application needs more = refreshments (increasing decnet transactions).=20 - I discover that these applications use 100% of Alpha CPU. - After tracing transactions over DECnet I see that the link = disconnection is requested by the PC. - The problem does not appears when I used a VXT terminal over DECnet = instead of the PC - I also tried to used Mandrake 8.2 distribution, last Debian = distribution, dnsprogs-2.19, XFree86-4.2... Same problem. I need your help, I'm in despair to find a solution. I'm working on this = problem since 10 days now, and I have no more idea. (DECnet problem or = X/Motif problem ?) Does somebody has the same problem by launching ico application on Alpha = machine and send its display on a PC linux over DECnet ? (If no problems = occurs could you give me you configuration ?)=20 Thank you for your help, Mohcine Bassir Thanks. |

I normally at this point do $ create/terminal/detached to get a DECterm up and running. On Linux you will need to enable remote connections. being lazy (and on a firewalled home network) I usually do $ xhost + which disables all security. You may want to be a little more specific and enable specific nodes as in: $ xhost +dnet:vmsbox One tip. Linux doesn't have the same set of fonts that some of the standard VMS utilities expect (eg 132 column text in a DECterm). If you have Alpha VMS box you can copy the fonts from there to Linux and add them to the font path using xset. I've never got the VAX ones to work though. When Branden releases XFree86 4.2.0 for Debian I may get around to building a DECnet-enabled Xserver for download. It would be really nice if the Xserver was modular enough for protocols to be plugged in too - wonder if they've though of that.... patrick |

I think that you find ansvers to the VMS-related part of that question in the comp.sys.vms FAQ. I haven't actually tried to display anything on a remote decnet X server from vms, but I have tried it on tcp/ip, and that is explained in the FAQ. |

I have several machines running Decnet on Conectiva, which is similar to
RedHat, and it will not work if started in rc.local. I have found that
Decnet must be started before the TCP/IP network is started. I put in
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d two symbolic links:
S10decnet -> ../init.d/decnet
S20network-> ../init.d/network
Otherwise, I guess one should do an ifconfig down before starting Decnet.
This is because I'm using the same interface for both Decnet and TCP/IP. If
you have a separate network interface for Decnet, you can start both
networks in any order.
Also, I put the following three lines in /etc/rc.d/decnet, at the end of
the start command:
echo "pc576" > /proc/sys/net/decnet/node_name
echo "1.576" > /proc/sys/net/decnet/node_address
echo "eth0" > /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device
Substitute node name, address, and device with your own values.
To check if it has started OK, type:
cat /proc/sys/net/decnet/node_name
cat /proc/sys/net/decnet/node_address
cat /proc/sys/net/decnet/default_device
If no response is printed at any one of those commands, then Decnet has not started.

It was on the road map for 2.5, but it will really depend on the amount of time I can reasonably spend on the code at the moment. I would very much like to update the docs too, but time is again the limiting factor. Some time ago Patrick and I wrote an article for Linux Journal and I think that its certainly time to have another go at something like that since the original is out of date. I'm on holiday next week, so nothing much will be happening during that time, but once I'm back I'll think about the best way forward with this. Suggestions are welcome as always, Steve. |

Cheers for that >You probably need to "echo 5.400 > /proc/sys/net/decnet/node_address" You weren't wrong - the first time I typed it I messed up Everything seems good from the command line - I just have to learn how to use them now I will probably pause now to write up my RH7.3 procedure - incase I forget later (and this box is a trial for moving people in the company of windows and onto linux - so hopefully I will need it later) A quick X question though.... >You can use X-Windows from OpenVMS to Linux if you build >your X-Server with DECnet support or download one. So the installation on RedHat varies considerably from Debian (where DECnet is part of the distribution). Can I second this request? I'm reasonably knowledgeable about VMS, DECnet and Linux, but I go for months (sometimes years) without using DECNet under Linux, then when I need to use it I've forgotton how everything works... Also, the kernel code and dnprogs have changed quite a bit over the last couple of years and it would be useful to know what works with what. Personally I don't see the distro dependent stuff as all that important - after all, RH people don't *have* to start daemons in the RH manner (for example), they can just stick a line in rc.local or whatever. It's more a question of setting the MAC address, setting up the config files, kernel dependent issues etc. Most of this info is around *somewhere* but it's often not obvious where. A short(ish) cribsheet would be really useful, or even a list of documentation links with a description of what each covers. You could send it to everybody on the list every 6 months... Thanks for your help on the MAC address front I don't suppose anyone has made a duffers walkthrough guide to DECnet on Linux?? (and need a duffer to try it on) I have spent 2 days working out how to compile a kernel - now I have worked that out and have DECnet in the kernel (not as a module) Then I installed the latest RPM on my RedHat 7.3 (2.4.18-3) system, chose my node name and entered my regular node aliases (then checked they had made it as far as /etc/decnet.conf - they did) I *Think* the dnetd is running - I started it manually. And I have no idea how to use startnet (are there any options I need??) I have added the MACADDR to etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 I have rebooted, started-stopped-restarted networking and tried as many things as my newbie brain could come up with, I have looked at the website (particularly the FAQ) and that is predominantly helenic to me So - the question is.... What blindingly obvious steps have I missed? Thanks in advance Nick |

A math version of the calculation that you can do in the Windows calculator is: - Take the last two hex numbers - Swap the order, and join them together - Convert to Decimal - Divide by 1024 = The whole number is the area number - Subtract the area number from the value (you should be left with a fraction) - Multiply by 1024 = This number is your node number Rob. |

Hi all, *Newbie Alert* I am having trouble working out the MACADDR for a given Node From http://linux-decnet.sourceforge.net/faq-single.html I got that MACADDR=AA:00:04:00:0A:04 = 1.10 And from http://linux-decnet.sourceforge.net/kernel.html I got The form of a DECnet physical address is AA:00:04:00:XX:XX The last two hex digits codify the DECnet node address. So MACADDR=AA:00:04:00:0A:04 0A = 10 - That I can get simple Hex-Dec convert However 04 = 1 - That I can't work out Can anyone help me get my brain arround it (and if someone wants to work out 5.400 I'd be most greatful *Grin*) Cheers Nick |

Hi, I have install dnprogs-2.17-1 on my distrib Mandrake 8.1 with XFree86-4.1 for decnet. On end of /etc/rc.d/init.d/decnet script i have added echo "eth0" > proc/sys/net/decnet/node/default_device echo "3.201" > proc/sys/net/decnet/node/address On /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 script i have added MACADDR=3DAA:00:....... /etc/decnet.conf properly configured 1) Now, we succeed to log from my Linux PC to the Alpha Open VMS server 6.1 = with sethost utility. We also succeed to open a decterm over decnet on = PC linux. I've sat on this release for far too long.
* Makefile fixes
* startnet fixes to arg parsing
* phone uses pixmap directory properly
* ctermd now responds to DEL, ^X etc (hooray!)
* dnetd task_server now won't run arbitrary programs.
* dntask prints error messages if the connection fails.
* setether uses "ip" command if available rather than ifconfig
* Added timeout switch to dnping
* FAL no longer eats directories starting with '0'
Thanks to Matjaz Godec
* Add virtual-root feature to FAL
* Change to libdnet_daemon to allow RSX to connect
* Fixed truncate option in FAL
* Fixed wildard fetching in FAL so it works with dncopy
* Changes to FAL to allow RSX file transfers
* Fix sending of binary files by FAL by block.
* Add .html, .tgz & .bz2 file types to FAL types list
The RSX work in FAL is only partially complete but I'd appreciate any testing
and feeback people can offer if they want this feature to work well.

Hi, OpenVMS 5.5-2 hardly support generic scsi disks. For examples connecting a Seagate SCSI disk of 1GB to a uVAX running OpenvVMS 5.5-2 gave a "FATAL DRIVE ERROR". Many other brands would fail the same way. At that time, Digital Introduced patches for the DKDRIVER.EXE (SCSI disk driver) and some of this 3rd party disk could be used. From OpenVMS 6.2, Generic SCSI disk support got better, but there's still some issues connecting UWSCSI disks to a Fast SCSI controller. You didn't mention which brand/model and capacity are you purchasing. Are they from Digital? Hi folks, Sorry for the off topic post, but this is as close to a VMS list as I get.... Anyway, does anyone know if OpenVMS 5.5-2 has a limit on disk sizes? I am purchasing some external storage for our MV3100/95 and want to make sure that it will work.... Many thanks, Tom |
