I didn't know this even existed and it seems to offer great possibilities for me. I haven't time to do anything with it for a day or two, unfortunately, but I'm really grateful. I was about to say that neither of the documents you mentioned to me earlier mentioned Study Notes but I've just had a look at CATUG and it does. Perhaps I should stop pestering you and read this and your wiki more carefully. Incidentally, I also tried to access your wiki and was told: The requested URL /wiki/Frontends:Eloquent was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.15 (Red Hat) Server at www.crosswire.org Port 80 I thought you should know. I'm extremely grateful for your latest help. Barrie. |

Hi Barrie. You basically have two options of creating personal commentaries or your own content: 1. a personal commentary module This will be exchangeable with other Sword programs like Xiphos. You don't normally edit the rawfiles but you enter the text in Eloquent for each verse. Reflinks are in the form of <a href="sword://kjv/gen1.1-10</a>. If you leave edit mode the xml tag will be displayed as a clickable text reference. See attached screenshots (refliknk, reflink2). 2. you create a note (Menu->File->Create Study Note) This will create a .rtf file. Basically this can be exchanged as well but .rtf is somewhat common to Mac OS X only. Here you can write any text and are not bound to verses. You also have the freedom of formating your text as you like. Additionally reflinks are also possible, see attached screenshot: note_reflink). Manfred, I've found a way to get what I want apart from details by reading http://www.ccel.org/ThML/ThML1.04.htm. I did the following: 1. Get Personal Commentary and put it in gbs-stuff. This gave me a hierarchy of directories: /Users/gbs/sword-modules/gbs-stuff.swd/modules/comments/rawfiles/gbs-stuff. 2. I opened the Personal commentary on Jude and saw lines with Jude 1:1: down to Jude 1:25:. 3. With 25 verses in Jude and files 0000000 to 0000024 (plus others) in the gbs-stuff directory, I assumed that 0000000 refers to verse 1. 4. I added the following text to file 0000000: Gen2:1,John3:16<BR/> <scripRef>Romans viii. 27,28; x. 8-13</scripRef><BR/> <scripRef>Ro 5.1;Jo 1.1-2;</scripRef><BR/> <scripRef>Ps 23.1;Ro 5.1;Jo 1.1-2;</scripRef><BR/> 5. I selected a different commentary then back to gbs-stuff. I saw one line of text and 3 of references. Hovering over each line of references showed them in Preview. This shows that things seem to be working more or less as they should. My only questions are: Q1. Does Eloquent function better if other tags are used? Q2. At present if I edit the 0000000 file outside of Eloquent, I choose a different commentary followed by the gbs-stuff commentary to make the results of the edit current. Is there a shorter way? Q3. My default Bible is ESV and text of references seem to be of that version. Assuming that I have KJV installed, how can I get KJV verses shown? I hope I've not caused you a lot of work. Barrie. |

I'm not sure that Personal Commentary is what I want so I'll tell you what I want to do:
1. Type a few cross references into some file that is readable by Eloquent.
2. Get the text corresponding to each reference into the Preview window by hovering over the references.
Essentially I want to create something that looks and behaves like a miniscule part of TSK. So far I've been able to get text into Personal Commentary but not references.
I'd be grateful if you could either tell me how or point to somewhere where I can find it for myself. I've looked at the 3 nt.{bsz, bzv, bzz} files in an effort to find how they are formatted but they are unreadable data files.
Barrie.

I suspect that since I am using an Imac on Snow Leopard I should use 2.3.5. I would upgrade if 2.4.3 worked on Snow Leopard. (The reason I'm investigating 2.3.5 is that a recent {2012/04/30] message from Dmitrijs Ledkovs on the gnomesword-users mailing list said that the Xiphos folk 'endorsed and recommended' Eloquent and that *2.3* should be used for 32 bit Intel or PowerPC Macs. This was in answer to someone who asked: Please tell me where I can find a 32 bit Mac OS version of Xiphos.)

I glanced there but not much seemed to be happening which is why I sent an email.

I apologize for this. I looked but found nothing; put it down to my age :-)

When I started with Eloquent I downloaded ESV only. Then I read the Catug wiki and found I could change the directory where modules sit by use of a symbolic link. This suited me because I already have several modules for use with Xiphos (obtained via VirtualBox and Xubuntu). After creating the slink, Eloquent started crashing and I thought it was because the way modules were dealt with by Eloquent was different from the way used by Xiphos. This was when I wrote my email. I continued to play with Eloquent and now think think that the crashes were due to finger trouble since I've not had another crash since.
You'll probably get more questions from me in the future. For now though I'm very pleasantly surprised with Eloquent's facilities and very grateful for your help.
Barrie.

Well. Eloquent is the new name of the app since version 2.3.0. It is thesame app except some new enhancements and fixes that were introduced in then 2.3 release. So, I would use that version. You should possibly make the people at Crosswire aware about this. I dont what the source was of this module. Or, you create a full bible version of this text as Sword module if the text is public domain. Manfred Sent from my iPhone Am 20.01.2012 um 15:02 schrieb James Moore <jdm...@gm...>: > Hi Manfred. Hi Manfred. No, the Peshitta is the Syriac version of the whole Bible: OT, Apocryphal books, and NT. You are right, the site you found only has the NT available online. At leas about 5 years ago there were some errors in that site's text. They may now be corrected, but beware. The only full version of the OT free in electronic form on the internet is: http://cal.huc.edu/ > syriac It appears that your Peshitta module just does not include the OT or Apocryphal books, which is ok though it would be nice if the OT was part of it. The title is misleading that's all. It probably should be Peshitta NT. Thanks for still pursuing this! I can't get the Peshitta module to display a text in the OT. I have a Syriac unicode font and many Syriac fonts on my computer. I've played with different "module fonts" in preferences, but I can't get the font to display in the OT. Perhaps it's just not part of the module? I have another question. Is there a way to create one's own modules? Creating a personal commentary module is easy, but let's say I wanted to create my own text of a pseudepigraphal book, like 4 Edras. Is there any way to do that? Thank you for your time. Hello I wanted to make a suggestion. Right now on the sidebar for navigation there are the buttons for chapter and book navigation. They click but don't do anything. Only the arrows do anything to go back and forward, I think it would be good if one could add functionality to the "chapter" and "book" buttons as well. ie 1. "Chapter" button: display the whole chapter when you have just 1 or a few verses displaying. 2. "Book" button: Perhaps show the first chapter of the book. Hello Jason. Thank you for your mail. I will definitely consider your feature requests. It would be nice to be able to click on the Mod Options Menu and then on Show Strong's Numbers so we could see them all compared in that window. For instance - say you were searching for the word Love - with the Strongs numbers visible in results you could run the mouse over the numbers & see all the different words that appear as Love in English (phillio, eros, agape, etc). This feature would be a tremendous asset to the program, as often multiple words are translated in different ways to our English. > > Second - A more precise method of counting or tabulating & listing the search results would be excellent. Specifically, when one does a word search, instead of just getting the number of verses the word appears in, it would be nice to the exact number of times the word appears, with the count appearing down the left side of the results column. That way one could quickly scroll down to the 33rd time the word appeared (or whichever number you sought), then hopefully with the above feature, you could also see the underlying Greek or Hebrew word. > > The reason I ask for these features, is that we've discovered there are many other Divine features of the Scriptures which become apparent with the numbers of times original words appear, where they appear, & their relation to other words.
