Dear Steven, thanks a lot for that info. Also Temurins Java 25 does not support Ubuntu 20.04. So it is time for an upgrade of my Ubuntu-System now. Then the newer Java should be no problem any more. I will test also on the mac meanwhile… Best wishes, Jan Jacob sound | movement | object | space sonic architecture | site: https://www.sonicarchitecture.de spatial electronic composition | higher order ambisonic music > Am 09.03.2026 um 01:38 schrieb Steven Yi <ste...@gm...>: > > Ah, I think support for 20.04 will be removed once 26.04 comes out next month, FWIW. Ah, I think support for 20.04 will be removed once 26.04 comes out next month, FWIW. I use Temurin releases of JDK on mac and windows (part of adoptium project). I haven't tested on Linux in a while but they have instructions on installation for Debian-based distros here: https://adoptium.net/installation/linux#_deb_installation_on_debian_or_ubuntu I don't know if 20.04 is supported, however. Thank Jan Jacob! Yes you should be able to. It's easier on macOS because the blue.app embeds the exact version of Java that it will use. On Linux it will be a little trickier since older Blue won't work with Java 25 I think. If you install multiple Java, you might have to edit jdkhome variable in blue/etc/blue.conf (may need to do it for both the old blue and new blue to point to different java installations). The other thing is that your blue application settings will get shared. I would suggest making a copy of your .blue home folder that has your score, instrument, udo libraries, etc. There's also the folder where blue saves things like window configuration and other data, which is in ~/Library/Application Support/blue/dev on macOS, and I'm not quite sure exactly where it is on Linux (it shows in the "About Blue" panel that shows User Directory and Cache Directory). I think that should be all for doing this safely. Much appreciate the assistance in testing! Dear Steven, great, yes, I will be glad to help testing. Is it possible, to install the test-version of blue besides the current version without interference or overwriting something? Hi all, Given all the changes for time units, it's taken me a while to go through and test/fix things. I've still got further testing to do, but I think things are at a point where the new system is ready for general testing. If you're willing to help out, there are builds on GIthub Actions for Windows/macOS/Linux at: https://github.com/kunstmusik/blue/actions/runs/22782949228 I still have to create new documentation for all of this, but some general notes: - Time signatures and bars/beats time units: there's BBT (bars.beats.ticks), BBF (bars.beats.fraction), and BBST (bars.beats.sixteenths.ticks). For ticks, PPQ is hardcoded to 960, so BBT ticks will go 0-959, and BBST ticks will go from 0-239). - migration *should* work for older projects to map to Csound Beats or Time time units and primary ruler - there is now configuration to show a secondary ruler so that you can view both beats and time - you can right-click the Snap button to change snap unit - Piano Roll modified to have a global or local time view. If global, it will show the timeline ruler as a window into the global time. (For legacy projects, it will migrate to local time view. For new objects, it will use global if the primary ruler is set to a beat time unit, or local if the primary ruler is set to a clock time unit.) I'm most curious that older projects don't have migration issues and migrate as you would expect, and in general any feedback for things that work as expected. I have been mostly testing and working through beat-oriented views, so I'm curious to know for those of you that primarily work in clock time if the UI works for you. Any feedback appreciated! Thanks Dave and Jan Jacob! I'd like to make Blue sync via SMPTE with video. I'm not sure how long it will take to get through integration with blue-engine as I also have some proof-of-concept work for audio visualizations (e.g., VU meters, FFT spectrograms, etc.) that may take a little time to coordinate. I'll plan to do a research session soon to see what it might take to get video synchronization done. Dear Steven, that sounds intriguing - thank you so much for your work! Does that mean, that blue could be used easier for the composition of soundtracks for film when a SMPTE-timecode is available in the future? Hi All! I hope this email finds you well. I thought I'd let you all know that I've been a little slow going on rather large Blue change but it's starting to accelerate now that I have some time to work on Blue. I've introduced two things that are somewhat big and work together: 1. Time Units: Up until now, time units have been in Csound beats and the ruler in Blue's timeline has had a pseudo-timecode option. This has been sufficient for a long time, but I wanted to introduce different time units that can be configured globally and per-object. So far there is CsoundBeats, Time (hh:mm:ss.ms), SMPTE, Bars.Beats.Ticks, Bar.Beats.Fraction, Bars.Beats.Sixteenths.Ticks, and Samples. 2. Time Signatures (meters): this works in tandem with musical divisions of time for bars/beats/etc. There's a lot of internal work that's largely done, and I'm currently working through a number of UI changes to integrate the above. This includes multiple time rulers on the timeline (going back and forth on this, as I'm consulting most of the popular DAWs out there for reference and there's different approaches). I've had a time view centered up top in the develop branch that I didn't love but hadn't revisited until now. I will be redoing this to focus on current playback indicator time and have a little clearer UI for the selection start/end. Once the main work is done, I will have to look through various sound object editors to also adjust for the above (e.g., piano roll subtimeline). Overall, it's a big change that I will have to be careful about backwards compatibility, but I think it will be a good development. Once this is complete, I will be moving to reworking the blue engine. I have already developed a blue-engine executable that will run in a separate process that handles running csound and doing automations in native C++. The effects of this design should improve performance with better separation between audio thread and the UI layer. Additionally, it opens up paths should I ever want to move to a different language/UI layer. (For those technically interested, blue-engine uses shared memory for communicating values as well as ZeroMQ (ZMQ) for messaging.I have test code in Java, C, Rust, Python, and Node.js that works with blue-engine.) Cheers and all best, Steven [image: image.png] |

BTW: I re-triggered an actions build for the new-timeline branch. Haven't tested it but there's artifacts available here: https://github.com/kunstmusik/blue/actions/runs/10766925758 The downside is that it won't work with Csound 7 so you'd have to go back to Csound 6 with this one. Thanks for the info, I'll see what I can figure out. I know the override
has to do with a change to the Csound constructor to take in OPCODE7DIR64
override. I'm sending in NULL from Java but it seems it's getting some
random memory. Will see if I can get CS6 back in.
