I think JDK 21 should be good and I should probably update the info as that is the latest LTS release. For Debian/Ubuntu, you could try using openjdk-21-jdk from package manager and use: sudo update-alternatives --config java to choose which java is the default. If openjdk-21-jdk is not available via apt, try downloading temurin via instructions at https://adoptium.net/installation/linux/ and using update-alternatives. Greetings. I hope to try Blue 2.9.1. The d/l page https://blue.kunstmusik.com/ says re Java The recommended version is Temurin Java 17+ from Adoptium. After downloading the Temurin "OpenJDK21U-jdk_x64_linux_hotspot_21.0.2_13", I have no idea how to install it. Believe I have a JRE but need this JDK. The system here is Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS. Presently I have as Java, $ java -version openjdk version "11.0.22" 2024-01-16 OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.22+7-post-Ubuntu-0ubuntu220.04.1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.22+7-post-Ubuntu-0ubuntu220.04.1, mixed mode, sharing) There was a thread back in August '23 in this mail-list, by Forrest, Jan Jacob and others, "Re: [Bluemusic-users] linux binaries for java prerequisites?" This thread, suggests I use "sdkman", which may disambiguate between JREs or JDKs. https://askubuntu.com/questions/1157417/install-adoptopenjdk-adoptium-onto-ubuntu This thread, suggests I should persist with the rather complicated recommended install. https://askubuntu.com/questions/1375383/how-to-properly-install-temurin-jdk-with-update-alternatives/1386901#1386901 Can I please ask for a recommendation. It seems sdkman may disambiguate between JDK 11.0.22 and the newer recommended Temurin. It seems that the bottom thread above will unambiguously install the Temurin. |

Dear Steven, thanks, that really sounds interesting. To answer your question: I now use 0.0001 for resolution. The reason I did this was that I recently designed a new doppler-instrument (using vdelayxw) which I may use alternatively to the doppler-opcode. I hoped for even better quality of sound than before. But instead of that I heard remarkable clicks when the distance of the sound changed. So I set the automatisation-line for distance (only that one) to 0.0001 to get less abrupt changes in distance. The clicks have vanished immediately. Instead the crashes towards the end of rendering (after approx. 30 hours of non-stop- rendering) appeared. Probably I overdid with that fine resolution, maybe 0.001 would be sufficient, which would result in changes of 4mm of abrupt change in distance in my setting. I could try, If that would be audible. But I chose the extra-fine-definitely-overdone- resolution because I can monitor my work here just with 8 speakers and I once found about 10 years ago that clicks were audible for me when my work was played on a rig with 60+ fine loudspeakers (MUMUTH in Graz). So I tried to be on the safe side. Right now I went back to the doppler-opcode, which is maybe less consuming in terms of memory and cpu - that still works. And it did does not click even with less resolution (hopefully)… all in all it seems to be a bit more tolerant. Dear Jan Jacob, Apologies I missed replying to this email! I think slider resolution is a big problem; Blue's design should probably change regarding this. (It generates notes at each value, rather than generating a line and quantizing to resolution values. Dear Steven, I do wonder, if it is possible, to assign more memory to blue. I am working with blue 2.9.0 on Mojave. The reason why I am asking this is because blue freezes in an irregular manner while rendering to disk. Here is what I did to make blue crash: - I do work with a very comprehensive set of code, my instruments to render Ambisonic are quite demanding in terms of CPU and probably also RAM. - I am just trying to render a piece of 635 seconds length. It takes far more than 24 hours to render in fine quality. The freeze occurs near the end, lets say sooner or later between the 500 th and 600th second of score. - The piece rendered fine until the point I assigned more resolution to some specific sliders. Before doing this, the piece rendered fine. What do you think? Hi Jan Jacob, yes, i have tried -j N from time to time, and, yes, Blue crashes. I guess Java does not like this?? Dear Steven, dear list, should multicore rendering also work with blue? I put in -j 6 into the options for disk-rendering (because I have got 6 cores on my Mac) and blue crashes immediately if I try to render to disk. Same with -j 2. Are there any experiences on this list about this? "I'm not sure i understand completely? An Effect gets inserted into the Mixer from the Library?" Yes, when you insert an effect into the mixer it generally comes from the library or from a copy/paste of the effect. (Though, you can create a new effect too, but the INIT convention would be more for when sharing with others or adding to a new project from your own work). I've gone ahead and filed this as an issue on github to work on: https://github.com/kunstmusik/blue/issues/760 Thanks Dave and Menno for the replies! Hi All, I was thinking of an idea around INIT presets for BSB and Effects. The idea for this is that rather than have init values for each BSB widget, to have a convention that if you have a preset called INIT, you could use that to reinitialize your instrument/effect. Additionally, if you add that BSB/Effect into a project from a library (rather than copy/paste), if Blue finds an INIT preset, it'll automatically default to those values (rather than use whatever values the instrument/effect happened to have when you saved it to your library). Thoughts? Thanks! Steven |

Hi Steven, Thanks, I will try the build this weekend and let you know how it goes. I think you're probably right about what's happening in the Mode 6 instruments, which you did originally write. :-) That said, I tweaked at least one of them (to add a seventh mode), so who knows what else I may have done.. Thanks for figuring that out and letting me know where to look! - Dave On Fri, Oct 6, 2023 at 5:50 PM Steven Yi <ste...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Dave, > > For issue 1, I made a code change in a hotfix branch to keep references to > file choosers around so that their state is maintained. Hi Dave, For issue 1, I made a code change in a hotfix branch to keep references to file choosers around so that their state is maintained. I don't know how much memory that adds but I'm hoping not much. So far things seem to work well here. Could you give the build a try? There's some available on github actions near the bottom of this page where it says artifacts: https://github.com/kunstmusik/blue/actions/runs/6436704631 For issue 2, I think it's an instrument coding issue. I looked and the notes generated from Blue match my expectations for soundObject duration and Scale behavior. However, I noticed in the 3 Mode 6 instruments it has code modifying idur to be p3 * 3 (or p3 * 2) then uses xtratim to add a release segment for the notes. I suspect the latter notes are extending by quite a long time beyond what's generated audibly by mpulse + the decay time of the mode filters. (That instruments looks familiar... :P I don't remember if I did that code originally, but it's not very robust, as evidenced here with the use of long notes...). I think best would be to figure out a way to figure out the decay time for the given filter Q and use that as p3. Let me know if the 2 above are addressed! Hi Dave! I took a look into the file dialog and I think I found a general bug. There was code for setting the default file/folder but it seemed the code was wrong (and probably has been for many years!). I'll do some experiments to see if I can get it to default on app open but maintain the last location afterwards. For the second issue, Blue should be generating notes and using the last note to determine the length of the score. The end time should end of the last note + any extra time given in the mixer. Do you have an example project you could send me off list to test the issue you're seeing? Thanks! Hi Steven I am back using blue after a while away, using v2.9.1, and I have a couple of issues to report, both relatively minor. First: I am using the PianoRoll object. When I use the file selector to choose an .scl file, it opens in my Windows home directory, so I have to navigate to (in this case) my project directory, where the .scl files reside. This is not so bad, but it does this every time. In other words, blue doesn't remember what directory I was last picking a file from. It would be very nice if on subsequent opening of the file dialog, blue would go to the last directory I picked from (this would be fine on a per-session basis). Another approach would be to add the concept of a "project directory", and use that as the default place to look for files. Second: My timeline has six layers (in one group). The layers each contain a PianoRoll object. I don't know if this pertains to this object only, or to all sound objects, but when I grab the right-hand end of the object to make it longer (i.e., drag the edge to the right), the timeline gets longer. So after working for a while, I now have a timeline that is much longer than any of the sound objects it contains. This means that renders continue past the end of the piece; for a disk render, I then have to edit the sound file to remove the empty space at the end. Is there any way to get the timeline to contract to the size of the longest object? Screenshot attached. Thanks, Dave |

Hi All, I published a small hotfix release for Blue 2.9.1 that fixes issues with selection of JMask, Tracker, and other objects on the timeline. The bug has to do with the object implementations of equals() method which can be a bit hairy. So far seems to all work well but if you do find anything strange behavior pops up please let me know. The release is available from the Blue homepage: https://blue.kunstmusik.com Thanks! Steven |

There isn't text to put in besides the value on the Project Properties window. (Interesting, I realized I never added nchnls_i option, may have to add that...). This is setup in the Project Properties editor (can open from the Windows menu). There's settings for realtime render and disk render. The setting in the Program Options is done to set the default for new projects, while the Project Properties is the actual ones set for the project. Sorry, Steven, I still can't access apt nor repositories with an 'http:' address.* So, getting blue to run (It looks to be running, but I haven't tested beyond that) -- depended on using Jan's guide for hints on setting the environment variables for an installation from a zip file. *(The landlord's bank was eaten by a larger bank, that hasn't yet digested the increased customer base. Hi Forrest, Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town a few days and mostly offline. Did you get a JDK installed? APT is the easiest, but if that's not working you might try downloading the deb file and installing with dpkg. I did a search for "openjdk ubuntu deb" and found this: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/o/openjdk-17/ All best, Steven On Tue, Aug 1, 2023 at 11:55 AM Forrest Curo <tre...@gm...> wrote: > & set the environment variables re your guide, thanks! > > On Tue, Aug 1, 2023 at 8:48 AM Forrest Curo <tre...@gm...> wrote: > >> It's the fact that apt tries to connect with repositories through the >> system downstairs, where the modem responds to everything complex by a long >> delay, followed by a message that apt can't interpret, saying ~please >> contact our billing dept, oh well. >> >> Later today I'll try stuffing the bin files into /usr/local/bin, the >> files in lib into /usr/local/lib...(?) >> >> On Tue, Aug 1, 2023 at 8:19 AM Jan Jacob Hofmann < >> jj...@so...> wrote: >> >>> Hi Forrest, >>> >>> here is a guide how to install it: >>> https://www.linode.com/docs/guides/how-to-install-openjdk-ubuntu-22-04/ >>> >>> …but it uses apt.
