Here's something else I was just thinking about when reading over the conflict resolution thread. Like every good Unix and perl program, webvcrplus has a number of ways to skin the same cat. How do people on this list generally use it, especially wrt recording? For instance, my personal behavior is once the listings have been downloaded each week, I go straight to the All Scheduled Movies page. I also have a page on the Index to see what is currently scheduled (at least until we get a handle on this conflict resolution thing). I scroll down through the list and schedule movies for the week. I then go to the search box and select shows that I am looking for specific episodes, but don't want to add to favorites (like Voyager) and select episodes from there. Over the course of the week, I will schedule things from time to time from the Now On TV page, and occasionally drill down on a specific channel and schedule from the weekly listing for that channel. I don't postprocess through the program. Since I am using mencoder/ffmpeg for recording, I know through experience that a framerate of 976 will, after removing commercials (I use avidemux for that), give me 350MB/hour, which gets me 2 hours per CD with decent quality. Can others provide insight into how they use webvcrplus? I think that might give the developers some ideas into how to make it better. A couple of suggestions from my experience... 1. Keep a library of the .xml files (in a separate directory) of things that have been recorded. For instance, say I have Star Trek as a favorite. SciFi loves to have marathons every few weeks and tend to repeat the same episodes. As it is now, I end up digging through a pile of CDs that I have offloaded episodes on to. 2. A down-the-road feature might be to incorporate a full-featured user-modifiable video database into the mysql database for not only things recorded from webvcrplus, but DVDs, VCDs etc. 3. On the All Scheduled Movies page, movies that have been scheduled just disappear from the listing rather than showing up with a green dot icon beside them. On other pages (like the search page or the Now On TV page), the program shows up with the green dot. And unlike the current green-dot pages, when you click on a movie on the All Scheduled Movies page, it tosses you onto the Movies Showing Now page and you have to click the back button. 4. On the All Scheduled Movies page (and the Movies Showing Today page), the listings are broken down by channel by time. I would like to also see a by time by channel listing, because by the time I get down to the last few channels, I tend to forget when what I have scheduled on earlier channels. And it seems to me that different networks try to schedule decent movies at the same time, so it would be helpful to be able to view what movies are showing in the same timeframe. Keep up the good work. -- --Brad ============================================================================ Bradley M. I'm inclined to notify the user of a conflict when they schedule the program. It would go something like this: 1) User clicks on program 2) System recognizes a conflict 3) User is presented with a conflict resolution screen (not a popup, just another screen). 4) User resolves the conflict (radio button or something similar) 5) Back to the schedule screen -Chuck -- Quantum Linux Laboratories - ACCELERATING Business with Linux Technology * Education | -=^ Ad Astra Per Aspera ^=- * Integration | http://www.quantumlinux.com * Support | ch...@qu... |

Well, I have popups turned off generally speaking, so That would be less than optimum. How about this? When I end up setting a movie, it flips to another page when it is complete; for instance, when I'm selecting a movie from the All Scheduled Movies page, the reaction of the program is to flip me into the Movies On Now page after my selection. Instead of doing this, how about making the normal behavior either to flip you to the index page or just changing the record icons to green like it does on other pages? That said, in the event of a conflict, how about putting up a page with a warning about the conflict, the two offending items checked, and allow the user to uncheck one or both of them and click an update button? I think this would be the best approach. Other opinions? > > Between being so busy at work and the problems I have been having > > checking out stuff from sourceforge's CVS (I spent three days a couple > > of weeks ago trying to get a good download of winex), I really haven't > > had a chance to play with the new commits. > > The new release does let you read the program description of programs in > your video library. Is there somewhere we can save the descriptions (preferably other than the video directory) for later use? When I say later use, what I would like to see is having a library of these xml files that would be consulted for shows that seem to recur, such as Star Trek, where I have them burned to CD, but obviously webvcr has no way of knowing that, so the next time that it cycles around, it faithfully records it. Sort of the exact opposite problem I was having with the conflict resolution. -- --Brad ============================================================================ Bradley M. I have an RPM spec file built for webvcrplus that does all of the configuration. We'll be including the RPM in the book, but I don't have time to test it completely right now with a new release. Is there anyone who is willing to test the RPM version of webvcrplus on a RH 9 system? -Chuck -- Quantum Linux Laboratories - ACCELERATING Business with Linux Technology * Education | -=^ Ad Astra Per Aspera ^=- * Integration | http://www.quantumlinux.com * Support | ch...@qu... |

I have made a couple of commits to CVS. Do you think its time for a new version release. Here are the changes I have put in. 1. Patched listings.pl so it will work with the current version of xmltv ( the current 0.9.2.7 no longer works because of changes made at zap2it.com) 2. Fixed bug that preventing you from searching by channel 3. Added ability to view program description in the video library I also took out my database changes that I had previously discussed. I wasn't too happy with my change. It broke some other things. The current version no longer works because the xmltv format has slightly changed. I think that is the main reason for doing a new release. thanks chad |

zap2it changed their website, so if you haven't already done it you need to get the newest version of xmltv. This causes some problems with listings.pl. Please use the listsings.pl from CVS. Please let me know if anyone finds a bug. thanks chad |

After upgrading to the new xmltv, the program listings would not display properly in the Now on TV section. Please see the following for screenshots: http://www.ihtruelsen.dyndns.org/error/webvcr-error.html What is happening is that the channels are out of order, for instance, in the screenshot, the first channel is number 22, then 15, then 39, etc. Also, most of the program information is unavailable. When I choose a specific channel, then the program information all seems to be there. The database seems to be fine as well. I have dropped and rebuilt the database, upgraded to 0.9.2.7 and xmltv 0.5.14. Has anyone else seen this sort of behaviour? What else can I check to fix the problem? I should mention that, before the xmltv problem, using 0.9.2.5, it was functioning perfectly. -- Ian Truelsen Email: ia...@ih... AIM: ihtruelsen Homepage: http://www.ihtruelsen.dyndns.org |

I just did a commit to CVS.
CVS: Modified Files:
CVS: library.php listings.pl setup.pl
CVS: Added Files:
CVS: parse.php
I changed the sid to use channel instead of an auto increment.
changed setup.pl to use the new database structue.
If you want to use the new listings.pl you need to modify table stations.
sid has to be changed from an auto increment to a plain old int. Here is
the easist way to do this.
drop table station;
create table station(
sid int not null ,
sname varchar(100),
suburl varchar(100),
rname varchar(100),
channel int,
primary key(sid));
This might fix the favorites problem.
I also added a new file called parse.php. With it you can see the program
description while in the video library. It basically displays the xml
data in a easy to read format. I had to modify library.php for this.
Library.php still needs some work. Right now it displays each program
twice (ONLY click on the files that have a .xml extension) I will try to
finish it soon, but it does give you an idea.
thanks

We might consider building XSL stylesheets and then using the xmlto package to apply them at runtime. This would definitely make skins and UI improvements much easier to apply in the long run. -Chuck -- Quantum Linux Laboratories - ACCELERATING Business with Linux Technology * Education | -=^ Ad Astra Per Aspera ^=- * Integration | http://www.quantumlinux.com * Support | ch...@qu... |

Right now webvcr saves the xml program description. I was thinking about making that info available in the video library page. Does anyone know of a php xml parser? I saw one that required expat be installed on your system, but I thought a php only solution would be better (would require less things to install). A second option would be to write a simple perl program to read the info and display it (maybe in a popup or new window). Being more of a perl programmer I could do that pretty easily, but do we want to stick with php as much as possible? thanks chad |

For the record, the program only seems to get exhibit this behavior when
it gets...confused. The new SID thing is the best explanation I have
heard. I will keep an eye out for new stations being added.

Thats interesting, because the recordings come out either with the
episode names (e.g. "Greatest Raids - The Dambusters") or date/time
tagged for uniqueness (mainly movies, e.g. "A Century of Silent Service
- 2003-06-22 00-00-00"...I can't believe that the program would do that
in the output name of the video but not in its internal logic.
