I have installed KeePass on a flash drive to try to use it in a portable manner. I am not sure if that is a valid way to make it work portably. But the auto-type is not working. When I select a login item and click on auto-type, it opens a new window of Firefox (my default browser) rather than a new tab in the current window of Firefox. The new Firefox window opens to the home page set in its settings. Nothing else happens. Do I have to install Keepass on the hard drive? If that is required, then can I create/move the database to my USB drive?

KeePass does not open web pages when you click on Auto-Type, unless you have set the Auto-Type in an unusual way, or maybe you've installed a plug-in - like Kee.

How did you install KeePass on the USB? Did you use the portable (zip) download?

Why do you want KeePass on USB?

    cheers, Paul

I installed KeePass on a USB drive so that I can use KeePass on any computer by plugging in the USB thumbdrive. I unzipped the downloaded zipped file (portable version) to the USB drive. I double-click the KeePass.exe file to start the program.

Now I am seeing "Could not conect to browser at 127.0.01:8484" error when I select an entry and click the Open URL button. What is the correct way to use KeePass? Thanks.

That sounds like you have a plug-in installed. Disable any that are listed in Tools > Plugins.

I have half a dozen firefox extensions installed that I use. One of them is KeeForm, which I installed on the same USB drive. For some reason clicking/double-clicking on the Fee Form icon does not do anything. Not able to make Keepass work for now over 3 days is frustrating. If I have to turn off the extensions that I need, then Keepass is not for me.

Kee(Form) will be the problem. It is not required for KeePass to function with a browser.
See the Kee web site for information on making Kee work.

Paul (pail459): You're confused. KeeForm is not Kee (fka KeeFox); they do similar jobs, but they're written by two different people.

    Just saw this topic :-)

I guess the problem is that KeeForm (like any other software that needs to communicate with browsers) needs a "native messaging bridge".

When you install KeeForm, that messaging bridge will be copied into the KeePass folder, which is located on the USB drive in this case. If the browser is opened before inserting the USB drive, then that messaging bridge won't be started (that is, until a browser restart). And KeeForm won't be able to connect.

I put keepass on my flash

I hope by this you mean you copied your database to the flash drive; that's the only part that can't be replaced by a fresh installation.

I may have screwed up something by opening w/explorer.

Doubtful. Check the flash drive for a file ending in .kdbx (or possibly .kdb); that's the file that stores your passwords.

I was able to open move prior but am lost this round.

It's hard to say what could be going wrong without more details on exactly what you're doing (or trying to do) and exactly what error messages you're seeing.

I just really messed it up, so I am just redoing it from scratch with what I do remember or had written down. guess good way of cleaning up the junk. thanks for responding. I did have .kdb files but it did not look right tried opening prior to resetting so I thought I would have no issue, but did. all my other items I put on the flash transferred fine. Thanks again for trying to help an ignorant old lady!

    I did have .kdb files

.kdb files (without the x) are from Version 1 of KeePass; they can be opened with Version 1 of the program, or imported into a database (but not opened directly) with Version 2 of KeePass - or, you can install the latest Version 1 KeePass.

I mention this because reconstructing your database from memory is error-prone - not only in terms of misremembered passwords, but there's likely also some site(s) you registered for and quickly forgot about.
