I do think it should be possible to us RTKit for this in some sane way (the pulseaudio daemon does it just fine) and all involved components have been improved, but I will just create a new ticket if I find time for it.
Slow, really slow. Unacceptably slow.
But these tools are just examples. They open a new session to the device for every invocation, that is why it is slow. If you use e.g. the Gnome VFS or KDE dito GUI it will transfer all files in one session I think that will be way faster. If you don't like GUIs then discuss with some developers to do proper tools I guess?
