    Facepalm on me: please disregard the above post. It didn't occur to me that xz might have gzip-like options for controlling the compression level, especially since tar's invocation of the xz binary does not add any (and thus it's presumably using the defaults, though it's demonstrably not). In any case: once i found the -# compression option flags i found i could squeeze it down to 1.5MB reliably on both platforms. My appologies for the noise!

    Hi, all, i'm currently switching to xz for some downloads on my website and i'm a bit befuddled and troubled by one result set i'm seeing and cannot explain: xz 5.2.4 produces, on the same input set, wildly different archive sizes on a Raspberry Pi 4B (ARM) running Raspberry Pi OS than it does on Linux Mint 20 on an x64 machine.
