First things first, HeSuVi doesn't target any specific features of a sound card other than the ability to output sound. So the HRIRs can be used independently of your hardware. However, a sound card to connect your headphone to is still necessary. Software alone can't send a signal to your headphone. It would be a bit of wasted timed debugging why Equalizer APO (which is essential for HeSuVi) doesn't run correctly on your Creative card if you plan to remove the card anyways. But here's a starting...

I mostly followed what commercial products and tools like OpenAL Soft did: using the same HRIR pairs from one side for the other (just mirrored). But of course you can take SOFA files and create your own HeSuVi compatible wav: https://sourceforge.net/p/hesuvi/wiki/How-To%20Record%20Impulse%20Responses%20Digitally/#record-impulse-responses-from-sofa-files

The kind of upmix HeSuVi uses is only meant to work if the peak of the HRIRs is synced to the same position. Take a look at wav files that work with upmixing to understand this better.

This is how it is meant to behave, since it is for upmixing stereo. Take a look in the wiki on how to use this setting correctly.

It's not possible with how Equalizer APO currently works (at least for some/many/most? devices) https://sourceforge.net/p/equalizerapo/tickets/26/ You can however do what rengoku suggested but that only applies if you change your device to use stereo in the Windows settings.

No, the upmix always targets 7.1 internally. So it will be stereo to 7.1 to binaural, or 5.1 to 7.1 to binaural regardless of what your device is capable.
