I have narrowed this down. If in a JEdit sesssion you open a project viewer project and do a search in that project root, you can not afterward in that same JEdit session do a Search | Search in Directory without getting the error I cite above, even if you close your Project Viewer project. If in a JEdit session you never open a project viewer project and do a search in the projecty root, then you can do the Search | Search in Directory without a problem.
