jphein, I just noticed your edited post. The main problem that I see is the grid sizer issue. Using WxGlade one can open the included .wxg file and manipulate the widgets and then update the .py file. WxGlade is the program that generated the code causing the error message and so I thinks it's best to use it to try and fix your problem. If there are any verion differences of the modules needed I suppose problems could arise.
I know it's been a month but I just noticed the question. I have not been using this for almost one year now. I used WXGlade for creating the layout and so I recommend opening up the file with the latest version to resolve this layout error.
