A fully functioning computer setup consists of the computer hardware and its accessories. Without these accessories, there is very little that can be done with the computer. Some of these accessories are external such as printers, external speakers, and keyboards while other accessories are internal such as video cards and sound cards. For a computer to work effectively, these accessories have to be able to communicate with the computer's operating system; accessories that are not able to communicate with the computer operating system will not function normally. A device driver is a software or program that tells a computer's operating system how to communicate with an accessory. A device driver can be considered a translator of sorts, dictating how data exchange occurs between a computer operating system and its accessories. Every computer accessory has its own device driver which must be installed before the accessory can be used.
