About Everything

"Everything" is search engine that locates files and folders by filename instantly for Windows. Unlike Windows search "Everything" initially displays every file and folder on your computer (hence the name "Everything"). You type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed. "Everything" only indexes file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build its database. A fresh install of Windows 10 (about 120,000 files) will take about 1 second to index. Everything can search file content with the content, search function. File content is not indexed, searching content is slow. A fresh install of Windows 10 (about 120,000 files) will use about 14 MB of ram and less than 9 MB of disk space. 1,000,000 files will use about 75 MB of ram and 45 MB of disk space. Your search windows will reflect changes made to the file system. "Everything" will run on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.

    "A massive time saver "

    Pros: It is so quick… I can’t believe after dealing with file explorer for 30 yrs that anything like this was possible.

    Cons: So far, I’m just using it to find duplicate folders stored on different drives and portable drives, so I have found no problems at all.

    Overall: I’m so pleased. I’ve wasted so much time waiting for windows search to search the whole drive/s for a particular folder or file name, and this is instantaneous after initial indexing.. which is way quicker than windows ever has been..

    Pros: Does exactly what it says, it finds any file on any drive instantly.

    Lightweight.

    Plugin for PowerToys.

    Cons: Doesn't search file contents.

    No simple "advanced search" (regex is not for beginners).

    I like the minimalistic UI, but it could do with some graphical updates and options. You can customize the colors in the results window but not the rest of the program.

    Overall: When I first installed it, I immediately searched for the most obscure file I could think of - a 15 year old Word document located on an old HDD. This program found it before I had finished writing the first word.. Meanwhile the standard Windows search takes up system resources almost 24/7 yet takes like 5 min to find that same document.

    I use it as a plugin for PowerToys, but works as a standalone too.

    "In the beginning..."

    Pros: In the beginning, it was the greatest search app I had ever seen. But now a few years later, it no longer even searches everywhere at all. Something I know is on one of my drives and the drive is not even searched. I found Wise Jet Search and it is as good as I used to think Everything was.

    Cons: It stopped searching EVERYWHERE. Thing I know are there are not found. Thankfully there are other alternatives to the Windows search.

    Overall: Great for many months. No longer, though. I told a great many people about it but have now turned allegiance to Wise.
