  • I use this application for long time and every update is improve this amazing tool!
  • vym, view your mind, it one of the few mind mapping programs that works wonderfully on the RaspBerry Pi. I use it on all versions of my Pi's; however, it find that I use it most on the my original Pi Zero. Why do I run it on this version of the Pi? I'm glad you asked! It runs extremely well on the Pi Zero, while allowing me to use the limited resources that I have available to the best of my ability. You should give this program a try as I think you will very much enjoy using it. NOTE: The current version for from the Pi Foundation is 2.6.11 as I write this, and someone needs to update their repositories.

Thanks for the feedback! vym probably could be built out of the box for Raspbian 11 or 10 using build.opensuse.org. Get in touch with me, if this sounds interesting... -Uwe
  • I installed this in Win7 and it said it couldn't find 7zip to unpack some files and indicated my Windows is older than Windows 10. It let me browse to the 7Zip exe but it didn't like my version. I pointed it to Winrar. Indicator at right says it is not happy. I checked the temp dirs for things to install manually but it was not clear what I was looking for. So with much of the program not yet installed I uninst it. I have never had such a problem before with any application of thousands, going back to Win95, 98, XP, Win7. Program installers should not rely on local system utilities to unpack themselves. So I inst Z-zip and reinst vym to the default path it gives, Program Files (x86)\vym. On launch I get 5 error dialogs. The docs, demos and plugins are installed but on launch it wants tar or it can't open default.vym (or any .vym file). Status on browse to 7zip.exe "not happy" so I set the path to 7zip.exe in the program. The main error is in the 7zip.exe args. It says about -x....too short option. Happens if I inst in Program Files path or another drive.

Recent versions of vym don't need 7z but just use tar included in Windows 10. Please note that Windows 7 is not supported, neither by Microsoft and nor by vym. For playing around also xml can be used to load/save, no 7z or tar required then. Still vym seems to refer to 7z in a dialog description, I'll open an issue for that on github: https://github.com/insilmaril/vym/issues/55 zip settings dialog will be removed in next release.
  • Appearance is everything. Using KDE3 icons dates this wonderful App. Please point icons to use system defaults. Most Users changes their system icon theme to one they like which a number of Apps now follow. If this is too hard to implement or not possible please at least update your icon set to use Plasma 5 seeing VYM is QT based. I used to develop Legacy OS and included VYM in my Distro. In my Distro I changed your icons to improve the appearance of your App. This small change makes all the different. If you would like me to go through all your VYM icons and change them to Plasma 5 please leave a message here.

Is used the old "3D" look icons because I like them :-) At least flags can be user defined now. Can you send me examples of your icons, maybe screenshot? Ideally at my mail address in vym or let's continue in github. Thx Uwe
  • Finally one that's intuitive and and doesn't need a mouse for everything.
  • This software is a GEM. I've already recommended it on Slant and alternativeto.net . I really liked it and have fun using it for my study. I just wish that when I export the map to PDF, it exports the notes too as notes inside the pdf. Currently afaik, it only exports the image of the mind map without any notes. This would be a great addition to the export feature and will make it more beneficial in sharing the mind-map as a pdf with others.

Hm, one could write a user script to export both as image and text and bind it to a function key, maybe. Would that help?
  • Thanks for the program under a free open source license!
  • Have you ever build vym in ubuntu? CMake scripts of the project doesn't work well in ubuntu 16.04. In fact, I'd like to find a way to combine two vym documents by nodes. I write a doc in windows, and another doc in ubuntu. So I'm confused now.

Meanwhile vym is automatically built for Ubuntu/Debian again, see https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:insilmaril/vym
  • Just what we need: simple and efficient ! Juste le nécessaire: simple et efficace !

  • Thank you for your diligent work on Vym. I have a large project coming up soon and would love to fill you in on the details another time. Your Vym program is the winning choice of the mind mapping programs out there. What I love is the simplicity and ability to have some speed. Yet it allows a person to be as thorough as needed. Freeplane was the mind map I had chosen until I seen your work and program. I need this program as a recommendation for potential artists to use as a tool to support there planning and progression. This includes myself. If you are curious as to why and how I would be happy to fill you in. Right now this would make for too much writing in this email. In summary this will be used closely with Android Googles Keep Notes. The idea is too be quick on the draw with the phone to record fleeting ideas and transfer it to your mind map as a means to solidify plans and organize ideas. I plan on openly recommending your program on websites and promoting others to use it as a tool to increase production and reduce stress. Thank you again for light weight non-bloated software. If I was able I would send you some sort of payment. However my funds are limited for the moment. It's taking all I have to get this program designed and implemented. Sincerely, Dean

  • Very Nice Tool and Easy to get started with VYM MindMapping. Thanks Uwe !

  • It imports FreeMind maps, but not if they are newer than vers. 0.9.0. Latest vers. is 1.0.0; not to mention FreePlane's 1.5.9. Cloud-shaped cloud does not surround a node, but floats above it. No per-node font attributes. I'd give it one star, but it is Qt, and so will run fast. I hope the project gets farther, but right now, it has a LONG way to go. WARNING: It has no link to its uninstaller on Windows, although you can find it in its program directory!!!

I would be interesting to see what features of Free* are missing. If someone just wants FreePlane features, use FreePlane ;-) Yes, the cloud frame can be improved, but it already can include a node or subtree (branch property editor->frame) Meanwhile also the uninstaller on WIndows works ;-)
  • Good program, simple and efficinet..
  • it's just a mind map for linux (and other operating systems) but it deliver what it promises. Just like that! Congratulations for the fantastic job!
  • Not running on Mac Sierra 10.12.2
  • Need update for Debian/Ubuntu family...
  • Pros: Extremely lightweight, naturalistic branch layout, some great drag and drop functionality, and the basis for a great mind mapping too Cons: Not that intuitive... Diverts from standard key operations, e.g. pressing F2 won't allow you to edit a branch Having used Xmind for Windows I'd like more 'usuability.' Some features exceed its rivals (including Xmind Free), but certain things - like being able to colour branch lines according to their grouping, rather than having only one colour for all branches, and being able to paste text to directly create nodes - would be great to have. That said, if you want a simple, light, desktop cross-platform mind mapping application this is a contender that will support your idea generation, and integrate well with other office programs you are using, then this should fit the bill.
  • This is simply an excellent light weight application running on Linux - especially useful for writers.
  • Quick and intuitive. Would be 5 but needs Android port.
  • just works as I need
  • Great project! But sometimes I lost my notes. Don't know why...
  • Hello for all! My app can´t save. Display me a error for looking for a xml in ".."C:\Users\_xxx_\AppData\Local\Temp\". I am running a Win8. Thanks for all!

  • I just got 2.3.24 running on my Macbook Air as follows: (1) edit file.cpp, line 139 change it to: QString r="/Users/<MyHome>/my_vym"; where <MyHome> obviously needs to be replaced by your home. (2) qmake (3) make (4) cp -r styles scripts icons flags lang macros demos exports vym.app/Contents/Resources/ (5) sudo make install (6) cd /usr/local/bin (7) vym.app/Contents/MacOS/vym (8) You can continue making it nicer by adding the path to your $PATH, etc ...
  • A very interesting mind mapping tool with a unique slide show (presentation) feature.
  • perfekt. das beste und einfachste Mind-Mapping (und vieles Mehr)-Tool ! Danke!
