SPINA is software for the rapid, reliable and accurate determination of constant structure parameters of endocrine feedback control systems. It is a class of static function tests that require nothing more than steady-state concentrations of hormones or metabolites obtained in vivo.

The first version of this cybernetic approach had been developed for the evaluation of the functional status of the thyroid gland, i.e. thyroid's secretory capacity (gain of thyroid, GT or SPINA-GT) and sum activity of peripheral deiodinases (GD or SPINA-GD).

A second version has been established for insulin-glucose homeostasis. It delivers the secretory capacity of pancreatic beta cells (SPINA-GBeta), an estimate for the insulin receptor amplification (SPINA-GR) and a static disposition index as a measure for the loop gain of the feedback loop (SPINA-DI).

Both implementations of SPINA have been validated in more than 50 clinical studies based on large cohorts.

Features

  • More than 25 years of continued development
  • Based on published parametrically isomorphic models of thyroid and insulin-glucose homeostasis
  • Algorithms evaluated in more than 50 clinical trials with thousands of patients
  • Suport for different units of measurement
  • Data import and export in HL7 format
  • Curated by SciScrunch, OpenAIRE and Zenodo
  • Cross-platform for macOS, Windows and Linux
  • DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3596049 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3596049 (SPINA Thyr)
  • DOI 10.5281/zenodo.15249620 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15249620 (SPINA Carb)

  • I am trying to use the version for iMac which is file version 4.2.1.875 with Cocoa widget set but it doesn't have an option to set preferences so that I can input reference ranges for TSH, FT4 and FT3 as I know the Windows version does. Is this an oversight?

It is possible. The preferences settings are available via the "SPINA Thyr" menu. This is the standard way for macOS.
  • Can't download it in Mac - says it needs to be updated and can't check it for malicious software. I'm really looking forward to trying this out in the future and hope it can be fixed.

This is a known issue that results from the fact that Apple changed the process of code signing. The next version of SPINA Thyr will be easily usable on all current versions of macOS again. BTW, you can start any app by right-clicking (or control-clicking) and selecting “Open” in the context menu. This procedure may, however, in some cases involve a security risk, since it bypasses the GateKeeper mechanism. Sorry again for the inconvenience. The issue has been resolved in SPINA Thyr 4.2.1. Please download and enjoy the new version.
  • Unable to run on MAC

  • I downloaded it but MacOS says it cannot be checked for malicious spyware and so it will not open. I hope this can be fixed as I was really looking forward to trying this program!
