I have been looking at this program for several months. I am just an average
'joe", yet I find this a most useful program for me. I use it mapping Bible subjects and it more than suffices. My problem is remembering all the commands and using them.
Thanks for a great program!

Every time I try to make a mind map, I try using this or FreeMind (both kindred spirits). Every time, I end up utterly frustrated at the user interface, and going to find some other tool instead.
There seems to be a rich supply of features, but even simple operations are a challenge.
Cutting everything back to basics would be a huge improvement.

A good software, I like to use it. Because I don't know how to contact the author, I have to constantly update my findings and ideas in the comments here. I hope to have a new feature, but I am unable to post on GitHub. Therefore, I am writing here in the hope that the author can see: I hope to have a button that allows the background color of the node to be selected to be the same or different from the color of the border, so that you can create a colored node that looks borderless.Of course, it is best to also can set the background color opposite to the color of the border. (The expression I wrote last time was incorrect, but I have corrected it this time) Please forgive my poor English. I have translated the user manual into a bilingual version of Chinese and English, but how can I publish it? I am unable to access the GitHub website. I have found an issue where if the color of tags is not set in the styling, the tags of nodes can freely set various font colors and background colors. But once the color of a tag is set in the editing style, all tags will only have one color in the style and cannot be freely changed anymore. Even if the tag color in the editing style is changed back to the initial color, it cannot be freely changed anymore, as if changing the tag color in the style is locked to the style. Therefore, the best choice is not to modify the tag properties in the editing style.

Freeplane Review: An Objective Perspective Freeplane is a powerful, open-source mind mapping application that caters to a wide range of users, from casual note-takers to serious project planners. Its frequent updates demonstrate a commitment to ongoing development and improvement, which is commendable. This review aims to provide an objective assessment of Freeplane's strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: Feature Rich: Freeplane boasts an impressive array of features, including support for multiple map formats, rich text editing within nodes, image integration, hyperlinks, and various styling options. Advanced features like scripting and add-ons further extend its functionality, allowing for customization and automation. Open Source and Free: Being open-source, Freeplane is completely free to use, distribute, and modify. This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious users and those who value community-driven development. Cross-Platform Compatibility: Freeplane runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, ensuring accessibility for users across different operating systems. This cross-platform nature is a significant advantage. Active Community: A dedicated community supports Freeplane, providing resources, tutorials, and assistance to users. This active community contributes to the software's continuous improvement and offers valuable support to newcomers. Regular Updates: The frequent updates demonstrate a commitment to bug fixes, performance improvements, and the addition of new features. This constant evolution ensures that Freeplane remains relevant and competitive. Intuitive Interface (for experienced users): While there's a learning curve, once mastered, Freeplane's interface becomes quite efficient. The use of keyboard shortcuts and context menus allows for rapid map creation and manipulation. Weaknesses: Steep Learning Curve: Freeplane's extensive feature set can be overwhelming for new users. The interface, while powerful, isn't always immediately intuitive, and the documentation could be more user-friendly for beginners. Interface Aesthetics: While functional, Freeplane's interface could benefit from a more modern and visually appealing design. Some users may find it dated compared to other mind mapping tools. Performance with Large Maps: While generally responsive, Freeplane can sometimes experience performance issues when dealing with very large and complex mind maps. Limited Collaboration Features: While some workarounds exist, Freeplane lacks robust real-time collaboration features, which are becoming increasingly important for team-based projects. Documentation Could Be Improved: While the community provides support, the official documentation could be more comprehensive and easier to navigate, particularly for new users.

This is one of the most amazing pieces of software (regardless of being open source which is great too). Very few other apps exist that are as easy to use, as flexible, as well maintained, as powerful and if used for things like task management and brainstorming.....transformative and even life changing. If I had to go to a desert island and could take only one app, Freeplane would be that app.

I have recently switched from FreeMind to FreePlane and so far I have found all my FreeMind mind maps load and work just in in FreePlane. I'm exploring the new (to me) features of FreePlane and am quite impressed at what a nice job the FreePlane developers have done. What excellent MindMapping software!

Great opensource work from the devs!

After years of stumbling around, we finally have software at a very high level. The number of updates appearing on average every week - two, proves the intensive work of developers on improving the application. The main challenge at the moment is probably to create a version that allows group work in remote mode, for example on Google or OneDrive. Work on it, it's very much needed right now. I wrote about my other FreePlane needs in your blog. By the way, you have a big mess of communication on the site. Not sure where to put different comments. I can't find what I wrote yesterday. And finally, why double login - to the SourceForge platform and to GitHub? (I have an account on SourceForge and it's probably enough) Wieslaw Belz

Easily the best open source mindmapping software! Especially once you get past the surface and into the less obvious features. Great job on this software! Rating update 2024-06-28: Still love this software.

The best mindmap software on the pc 💻

Freeplane and its predecessor Freemind are my favorite desktop mind mapping programs and I've used or tested all of the top-rated mind mapping software. If you spend a little time learning the system, it is fantastic for supporting years worth of ideas, notes, plans, etc. I see Freeplane as the #1 personal information mapping software for a variety of reasons. Freeplane is often not listed as a top mind mapping program and this is a nasty missed opportunity for those who are looking for maps that can easily hold large amounts of information, organize it in an easily readable format, and help organize so many details. Having the files saved locally is also a big benefit to me as I don't want to store my mindmaps anywhere else. Support seems to be good and there is enough of a group to still get useful feedback for questions about Freemind. Check out Freeplane today and once you learn the basics, I believe you will really enjoy its uses. Good luck!

Freeplane is a fantastic piece of software. Thank you very much for making it available to the public. I am using it every day (almost) and really love it. If I may, I would suggest the possibility of importing data directly from spreadsheets? Great stuff anyway!!!! Regards JL

After reviewing many other alternatives, Freeplane is my choice. Thanks to the active developing team, it's feature-rich so that you will find all featrures you can imagine in a mindmapping software and more.

A fellow Freeplane Chad, I see. I myself have tried numerous paid Mind Map applications, and nothing can hit the spot like FreePlane does.

Freeplane is a great mindmap and knowledge map software with active development which seems to be the most important factor on Open Source programs these days. I recommend using the default settings and templates first as the program can grow complex rapidly. I would love to see some 3d functionality eventually planned for the software to compete in this burgeoning market. Mindmapping is the tool of choice for managing today's information overload problems. FriendfortheArtists plans on releasing some training videos on YouTube. The only complete mindmaps without costing an arm and leg are Freeplane(Open Source) and another one that wouldn't be appropriate to mention here. I strongly recommend both.

With installing Freeplane 1.9.8 I have lost the ability to assign styles directly or to assign a style to an F-key. I can only use those F-keys previously assigned and cannot assign a style directly to a node. Will this be fixed? Regards, Stephen Hicks
