INSTALL VMWare Player
-----------------------------------------
To install the cyn.in v2 community edition appliance carry out the following
steps:
Step #1. Download and install VMWare Player, Server trials or use your existing
VMWare Workstation installation.
VMWare Server download URL: http://www.vmware.com/download/server/
OR
VMWare Player download URL: http://www.vmware.com/download/player/
Step through the VMWare Player installation wizard and reboot when directed. Rebooting
is REQUIRED for the next steps.
Step #2. Uncompress this archive into a folder. The recommended location for
this is the "My Virtual Machines" folder in your My Documents folder, but
any other location will also do.
Step #3. Start up your VMWare player/server and open the cyn.in appliance image
in it. This is done by using File -> Open in the VMWare player/server software and
then choosing the cynin-2.x.y-x86.vmx file (where x and y are the actual version
numbers of your download).
Step #4. Adjust parameters as necessary within VMware. No adjustments are normally
necessary but you can change the maximum memory allocation to 512Mb or more to make
more memory available to the cyn.in appliance for better performance.
Step #5. Press the Play button or click "Start this Virtual Machine" from the main
screen of the VMware software. The cyn.in appliance will boot up and display
apropriate status messages and display startup progress.
APPLIANCE ADMINISTRATION & cyn.in SITE
----------------------------------------
The cyn.in v2 appliance provides an appliance administration interface for managing
the server and the appliance image, this is called the Appliance Web Administration
interface. The normal functionality of your cyn.in application which is to be
exposed to your end-users is provided on the main cyn.in web interface where the
all of the cyn.in features can be accessed and used.
Do NOT give the details of the appliance administration to your end users, it is only
for managing the appliance, and not cyn.in itself.
STARTUP
-------------------------------------------
When the cyn.in appliance has finished booting up, it will display the IP address that
was assigned to it as the appliance web administration URL in the following form:
https://192.168.0.x:8003
Note this down. Note that your IP address may be completely different depending upon your
network infrastructure and other conditions.
Type the address into your web browser. NOTE: Remember to type https instead of just http,
the appliance web interface provides a secure login only.
The first time you open the appliance web administration interface in your browser, you may
see one or more https warning messages related to certificates and such. These messages
are normal and you can ignore these and should permanently accept the certificate
to not see the warning message again.
LOGIN/PASSWORD: The appliance's default startup username is "admin" and the default
password for this is "password". When you login with this username the startup wizard
will immediately ask you to change the password - you should set this to a
strong password.
Go through the appliance administration web interface's startup wizard which will let you
set the IP address, hostname, etc.
When asked for email configuration set the server to localhost and the from email address
to whatever email address you to use as the "from" address for all notifications from the
system.
ACCESSING YOUR CYN.IN V2 APPLIANCE
---------------------------------------------
Once you have stepped through the startup wizard as explained above, you can access
your cyn.in site from the appliance as follows:
Note down the IP address from the appliance's web administration interface
from Configuration -> Configure Networking -> Network interfaces -> eth0 -> IP address field.
The url for your cyn.in v2 instance will be of the form:
http://<IP ADDRESS>/cynin
So if the IP address you got was 192.168.0.12 your cyn.in site can be accessed
from the URL http://192.168.0.12/cynin
LOGIN/PASSWORD: We create a default administration user with the following details:
username: siteadmin
password: secret
Upon logging in to the system with the above user you can change the password using
the my cyn.in menu. This is recommended.
NEXT STEPS
-----------------------------------------------
Proceed to create users for your site assigning them usernames and email addresses,
the cyn.in appliance will email them a password link to let them login and set up
their own usernames.
You should ideally create a normal user for yourself and all your immediate users who
will understand and use the system. Then on, you can create new Spaces for creating
collaboration and working areas. Use the Sharing tab in a Space to control the precise
permissions that a user has in a space.
SHUTDOWN
-----------------------------------------------------
While the appliance has been made considering that it will remain always-on, there
are times when shutting down the appliance is necessary. To shut down the appliance,
follow the following steps:
Step #1: Access the Appliance web administration interface:
Open up https://<appliance ip address here>:8003
Navigate to: Schedule Reboot, and press the Shutdown now button. Answer yes and the
appliance will commence shutdown. You can monitor progress of the shutdown in your
VMWare player's/server's main console.
Do NOT power off the VMWare host machine until the appliance has fully shutdown!
