Briar is a messaging app designed for activists, journalists, and anyone else who needs a safe, easy and robust way to communicate. Unlike traditional messaging tools such as email, Twitter or Telegram, Briar doesn't rely on a central server - messages are synchronized directly between the users' devices. If the Internet's down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, keeping the information flowing in a crisis. If the Internet's up, Briar can sync via the Tor network, protecting users and their relationships from surveillance.
Features
- Peer-to-peer encrypted messaging, forums and blogs
- Messages are stored securely on your device, not in the cloud
- Connect directly with nearby contacts - no Internet access required
- Free and open source software

I come in late (dec. 2018) but I'm definitely impressed. Even though Briar's singularity makes it one of a kind anyway, in addition it is indeed very user-friendly, which I find very difficult for this kind of project. I'd love to see an extra feature that would have it stand up even more, like, for instance, supporting PingTunnels, which would basically allow Briar to to just text EVERYWHERE, without even taking care of what network is in sight... I trust not only this would turn it into the next killer app, but also it'd damp a little bit its "designed for Hackerzzz" look ;-) One last thing : I am a bit puzzled, as there seems to be a more recent work on code.briarproject.org -but without apks?
