Okay, this is quickly driving me mad so I guess I should let you
guys know it :)
When I insert a \times character, either by writing or using the grid,
immediately after it gets shown as "×", it is saved as not "\times"
but "×", a character not displayed by latex.
Like this:
[exa@pc526a phd-proposal]$ grep "k :" phd-proposal.tex
A sufficient and necessary condition for a kernel function $k : \X ×
\X \to
symmetric function $k : \X × \X \to \R$ such that $k(u,v)=k(v,u)$.
Symmetric
Kernel function $k : \X × \X \to \C$ is an inner product on a vector
I have not seen this bug with any other math character
whatsoever, so I tend to think it's a specific bug for \times.
I was using the, probably 4.5.1 release, that comes with Mandrake
10, and now I had to downgrade to 3.x I'd be most grateful if you
release a fix, I think the new features in 4.x are tremendous!
I haven't tried 4.5 or releases before, only 4.5.1, if I do, I'll let you
know.
Happy Hacking,

That would be correct if 8-bit encoding is enabled. If you
don't use the inputenc package, you should not let X-Symbol
product 8bit-characters.
