Sorry for the late reply: I didn't know that github sometimes blocks messages without informing the administrators that they are expected to review and unblock them. The .wxm file https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wxMaxima-developers/wxmaxima/master/examples/displaying3DCurves.wxm might be a working example.
I am trying to draw plot of sum(x^k,k!,[k,1,n]) where n goes from 1 to 100 and x is between -1 and 1 I am able to draw it using makelist, but our teacher wants us to draw without using makelist. f1(x,n):=sum((x^k/k!),k,1,n); plot2d(f1(x,n),[n,1,100],[x,-1,1]); This just gives me error. "plot2d: expression evaluates to non-numeric value somewhere in plotting range."

Hello! I'm looking for a beautiful animation for wxMaxima for demonstration purposes (at school). The real meaning of the animation does not matter, I just need to show a beatiful demo in a loop to prove wxMaxima is working (and result looks nice). I'm not (wx)Maxima user so I was unable to draw one by myself. Could anybody possibly provide me a source code for one?
Hello I have a quick question about using maxima to generate plots from data files. The first file.dat contains a single numeric value on each row, the second file.dat contains 2 numeric values separated by a space on each row. I have to get the plot for each file and format it but I cannot figure out how to do this. On the document The Maxima package draw in the wxMaxima GUI Version 0.40, there is a section for file handling, it says that data_file_name is the name of the file with the numeric data...
Half of my devices choke on the sourceforge.net editor the rest of the wxMaxima project has moved to https://github.com/wxMaxima-developers/wxmaxima/ a long time ago Many users have complained that the project is scattered all over the internet => Will set this forum to readonly, and hope I can welcome all of you on https://github.com/wxMaxima-developers/wxmaxima/discussions instead.
Just upgrade your wxMaxima to a newer version and it will be able to open your file. If you are using windows just uninstall wxMaxima and install the version from https://wolfgang.dautermann.at/maxima/nightlybuild/ instead. But it seems like you have found an excellent testcase to trigger a performance issue => added your file as a test case for https://github.com/wxMaxima-developers/wxmaxima/issues/1419. Hope this is one of the places Kuba's 10-times performance boost will be visible in.
goes off not responding any time try to do anything. Since page up/ page down are useless unfortunately try use mouse and still goes off dimmed screen, not responding... NOw u made all that work useless ! can't even recover the file! Do something about this ungodly horrible interface !! file attached , atleast repair your screw ups and this file so i can reload and navigate this file and not lost all my work!
When I open an existing wxm file and make some additional calculations, then wxmaxima saves the script automatically on exit, even if I don't want to save it in its new form. There is a 'save' button, if I want to save it. How can I avoid this undesirable behaviour? When I can not avoid it, then I think it is a bug.
Dear all, Github finally has added something like a discussion forum => My plan is to completely abandon the old sourceforge site (too many sites cause confusion) and to move to https://github.com/wxMaxima-developers/wxmaxima/discussions Hope that this is a good idea. Kind regards, Gunter.
Hi Dan, Thanks for the answer - yes it is a slow program but I dont know any alternatives. Yes I would like to solve for x=1 for the differentiation.
The editor was nearly completely rewritten since 2019. If you update to today's version you will get about 500 bugfixes. I hope they solve your problem, too.
well I don't think u can expect much out of a program that takes 44 sec to solve the simplest ode and on top of that gives the WRONG answer ! Here it is: (load('contrib_ode),odelin('diff(f,x)+f,f,x)); and after a long 44 sec gives answer {%e^x} NOw this is really bad as after that gives the exactly WRONG incorrect answer ! instead of correct %e^(-x) HOWEVER for your particular problem I think it did give the correct answer. Don't use a menu or anything just write directly as: diff(exp(x)/(x^2-1),x)...

Which operating system are you using? If you use windows and want to install the version from dautermann.at it comes with the newest maxima - and in theory you can install any number of versions of wxMaxima in parallel. But MS Windows tends to default to automagically start the wrong one if you do this.
I have wxMaxima 19.05.7 on my Win10 PC. 1 - Should I remove it before I install the latest wxMaxima 20.11.0 or just install it on top of the existing copy? 2 - Will installing wxMaxima 20.11.0 also install the latest version of Maxima? 3 - Also, I did this installation way back so I don't remember if installing wxMaxima also installs Maxima or do they need to be installed separately? Thanks for any help.
Dear Users, I encountered a particular problem, and I do not know at all whether it is possible to solve it with wxMaxima. I would like to know all the roots (numerical solutions) of a transcendental equation, which includes complex numbers and the solution is also complex. For example, the equation looks like this: 0.2+0.4*%i=(x*exp(2*%i))/(cos(x)*x-%i*sin(x)*(x^2+1)); Wolfram Alpha offers six different complex numbers as a solution, and I would like to get this solution with wxMaxima. Thanks for the advice. I got it working.
gnuplot, the program that does the actual plotting, internally uses machine floats - that cover a high dynamic range - but that aren't up to small values like 10^(-250). If you multiply your equation with 10^250 you should get a curve, though. ...and gnuplot by default rounds numbers smaller than 1e-7 down to zero in order to hide the numeric errors you'll get if you use floating-point numbers. The newest maxima version's draw() command tells gnuplot not to do that. But I don't remember if this error...

I want to use unicode characters in a string. What is the syntax for doing this? I can't find any information on this topic. UPDATE: I figured something out. The syntax for writing symbos in a string looks like this: "some text here {\\#}". The {\\#} is used for symbols. This can be done with codes. For example {\\327} prints the multiplication symbol.

I am trying to plot a function that has very small y-axis values (10^(-250)) at the x-interval I am plotting. I have been able to plot the same function at other x-intervals. When I try to plot at another interval, the function doesn't appear and the ytic values don't either. I have adjusted the y-interval (ymin and ymax) to match the scale (I should be able to see it), so I am not sure what else could be the issue. Can anyone think of what else could be the issue?
I too have had the same problem. I was trying out inserting different headings and suddenly all the data below dissappeared.

I found a way to do what I wanted. You can use user_pramble = "set mxtics 2; set mytics 2" to set up minor tic marks through gnuplot.
Is there a way to use "grid = [ ]" and then make the gridlines invisible or change their color?
The idea behind the grid=[3,3] form was to allow the user to introduce minor tics.
How do I create unlabeled minor tick marks in "draw2d( )"? I've noticed that when I use "grid = [ ]" it creates minor tick marks as a side effect, but I want to have minor tick marks without using "grid = [ ]".
SOLVED The problem is with maxima. The gnuplot data file that is generated by maxima contains fields that are separated by whitespace. Maxima also assumes that the gnuplot datafile separator is set to the default of whitespace. If a user has set the datafile separator to something else, such as a comma, in his gnuplot config file then gnuplot will not be able to correctly read the data file that is output by maxima. The fix is for maxima to include "set datafile separator whitespace" in its gnuplot...

Seems like renaming the file to "content.wxmx" did do the trick. If wxWidgets has problems with certain special characters in filenames?
To me the most horrible editor I have to use is the sourceforge.net one. But if it looses data I understand the title of this thread. The 1st half of recovering your file was easy: Renaming the file to test.zip unzipping the file opening the file contents.xml that appeared this way and opening this file with wxMaxima. Also if you tomorrow uninstall your wxMaxima and install the one from https://wolfgang.dautermann.at/maxima/nightlybuild/ instead the problem won't occur with new files. Now I will...

I have just installed wxmaxima and can make file_search_maxima changes for a session to load a program. However, if I open a new window and attempt to load that program I get "not found in file_search_maxima,file_search_lisp" messsage. How can I make my file_search_maxima changes permanent? Thanks for any assistance.
The latest versions of wxmaxima break parametric plots. Example: load(draw); wxdraw2d(xrange=[-1.2,1.2], yrange=[-1.2,1.2], color=red, parametric(cos(t), sin(t), t, 0, 2*%pi)); This code should produce a circle but it does not. In previous versions this code would work but for the latest releases it fails. PNG image of broken parametric plot output with above commands is attached.

There is no bug. There's nothing wrong with those answers, either. They just don't look the way you want them too. You're getting complex numbers because the log of negative numbers is complex, and Maxima doesn't know the sign of (2x-A). But just because it throws a %i in the answer doesn't make it wrong! Try this, to clear the exponentiated the log terms. ode:'diff(y,x)+(3/(A-2*x))*y=0; ode2(ode,y,x)$ factor(radcan(%)); /* this does the clean up */ ic1(%,x=xB,y=yB); This probably gives you what...

Hi Dan, In Linux Mint, "styles.ini" is only created when using the save option of the Configuration/Styles menu. It only contains font information, but nothing else. On the other hand, the file ".wxmaxima" contains everything that can be configured. Therefore, that is the file I modified (by hand with a text editor). In other words, "styles.ini" seems to be of no real use, so I haven't bothered to create it on my system, using ".wxmaxima" only. None of this seems to carry over to Windows, so probably...
oh ok the configuation file for Linux must be different if yours is named .mxMaxima. I thought that was a directory you were referring. Seems in windows that file is style.ini. So u don't have a file named style.ini in the Linux version? In theory wxMaxima should have gotten way faster. I can offer an ppa, though: https://code.launchpad.net/~maxima-developers/+archive/ubuntu/maxima-nightly If that version is slow, too, we'll need some debugging what you are using and is slow what II am not.
Greetings, Gunter, I'm sorry to hear that. I have indeed tried out the newer 2020 version and find it so much more sluggish in general compared to 19.11.0. I wonder if that's because of the AppImage format? Would it possible to make this available as a PPA instead, just to see if there's an improvement? Anyway, navigating around the screen (scrolling, accessing menus, etc.) is so much smoother and quicker in the older versions. So, I guess that's what I'll keep using, just trying to remember not...
Hello Dan, Yes, this drives me nuts, too. The Styles saving mechanism is obviously broken, and in more ways than one. Apart from the bold/italics problem you mention (which is indeed so incredibly ugly), there's an additional problem of not being able to change the fonts on other aspects because they're grayed-out in the Styles menu. However, I've been able to work around this by manually editing the configuration file in a text editor. I'm running Linux Mint, and the config file called ".wxMaxima"...
This is the kind of bug report that a maintainer dreams of with all the troubleshooting and all. The problem this time is, though, that this bug isn't inside wxMaxima (where it would be fixable) but in wxWidgets. The 2020 version s of wxMaxima therefore no longer use wxWidget's help system but open the web browser the system provides.
Hello, Yes, this happens to me, too, and is extremely frustrating. If I don't manually save my work repeatedly, when it crashes I lose everything unexpectedly. I'm using wxMaxima 19.11.0, maxima 5.41.0, on a laptop under Linux Mint 19.3. It's difficult to ascertain the exact conditions which cause the crash, but I'll keep searching. Here's what I've noticed so far, though. As an example, try the following. Start fresh, then enter: wxplot3d((x^2+3y^2)exp(-(x^2+y^2)), [x,-3,3], [y,-3,3])$ This command...
How can I add a blue dot at the top of each bar?
Oh, yes, it's just perfect - thank you! But how could I know? And why so complicated to make such a simple thing as a bar chart? draw2d(fill_color = red,fill_density=0.6,buildq( [x:barlist], bars(splice(x))),xaxis = true); Does this what you want?
I can do: xlist:makelist(n,n,1,24); ylist:makelist(abs(-(4(-1)^n-2)/(%pin)),n,1,24); widthlist:makelist(0.1,n,1,24); barlist:makelist([xlist[n],ylist[n],widthlist[n]],n,1,24); draw2d(fill_color = red,fill_density=0.6,bars(barlist[1],barlist[2],barlist[3],barlist[4],barlist[5]),xaxis = true); but that gives me only 5 of the 24 bars so in stead of the last line I would prefer something like draw2d(fill_color = red,fill_density=0.6,bars(barlist),xaxis = true); That doesn't work but how is then the exact...
Dark Theme no-one has requested, until now. Would you be so kind and issue a feature request about that at https://github.com/wxMaxima-developers/wxmaxima/issues? The worksheet can be zoomed with Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-. But for menus and other pieces of text the standard functions of your operating system are called. This means I would expect if you have configured the fonts in your operating system to be big enough that the menus in one application are readable the fonts should be readable in all applications...

Hi, I'm a newcomer to the forum. I have used wxMaxima intermittently in the past but recently I have begun to use it much more frequently. As a result, the readability of the GUI has become something of an issue for me. Firstly, I would like to increase the size of the GUI menu font and secondly, install a dark theme, if any are available. I know these are relatively slight matters alongside wxMaxima's massive capabilities but if the lily can be gilded then why not. Any help would be much apprec...
Hello Mirco, how about defining your own function that performs this transformation? E.g. like this: foo(f,e):= f*ratexpand(ratsubst(1/sigma[m],a*k/(2*mu[0]*p[0]),ratexpand(e/f))); foo(2*a,n/d);==> 2*a*(1-sigma/sigma[m]) Regards Albrecht
Hello Albrecht, thanks again. In fact the results change by switching the value which is assigned to the variable simp. 'simp: false' inhibits the simplifications as shown the following code. (%i8) e:factor(e); (%o8) -(a*(a*k*sigma-2*mu[0]*p[0]))/(mu[0]*p[0]) (%i9) n:2*num(e); d:2*denom(e); (%o9) -2*a*(a*k*sigma-2*mu[0]*p[0]) (%o10) 2*mu[0]*p[0] (%i11) simp:false$ (%i12) e:n/d; (%o12) (-2*a*(a*k*sigma-2*mu[0]*p[0]))/(2*mu[0]*p[0]) (%i13) simp:true$ (%i14) e/(2*a); (%o14) -(a*k*sigma-2*mu[0]*p[0])/(2*mu[0]*p[0])...
The current versions of wxMaxima print a two page document as page 1 followedby page 1 again, i.e., the second page never appears.
PS: Note that Maxima is case sensitive: Simp and simp are different variables!
Hello Mirco, I think you are right: simp is only a variable like any other - except for the fact that Maximas simplification mechanism checks the contents of this variable to decide if simplification should be done or not. You may want to read the chapter "Introduction to Simplification" in the Maxima manual to learn more about this mechanism. Unfortunately I did not notice that I used the wrong name in the explanation. Sorry for the confusion I caused. You should see a difference in row %i6. When...
Please have a look at the image attached that I received from a student using 19.05.7 on MS Windows. I can't reproduce this in my system (Ubuntu 16.04 + nightly builds). It has been an issue that has been reported to me by 4 students so far since September last year. Peter
Hello Albrecht, thanks so far. Now I have just one remark: in the point a, you wrote that it need to turn off the simplification functions by using 'subst:false'; but in the code you defined a new variable (simp) assign the value 'false' to it. 'Simp' is only a variable like any other. I could write Simp:4, Simp+6 and I would get 10 as result. I could avoid the row (% i 1) and the same simplification would be performed equally. Could you please be clearer about this topic? Thanks again Best regards...
Hello Mirco, I think there are two separate problems: a) Maxima usually simplifies its result. So even if you succeed to create the form you want Maximas simplifier will modify the result. So you may not see the result you expect. b) How can you tell Maxima the exact form you want? Ad a) There is a variable that allows to turn off the simplification process. With simplification turned off you have to call simplification functions yourself. To turn off simplification use subst:false Ad b) As I understand...
Hello everyone, I have done several researches for the problem in question, but I have not solved yet. I would like to use a command "factor" or a similar one to factor a polynomial as I want even for further substitutions. For example: (2a+ba) factor(%) = a(2+b) and that's ok, but if I wanted to get '2a(1+b/2) how can I do it? I tried functions like 'factorout', 'factorsum', and others ones but none of them work. can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance Mirco

Thank you Gunter. Could you please explain to me how to set the autosave interval to 0 ?
