hi guys, I tried running live dvd wmlive 12.8 image on two dell laptops and they both boot into a black screen. Previous build 0.96 worked just fine(both live and install) on same laptops and everything worked, sound, networking etc. Could you please look into this.

Hi Rade, with the scarce information provided there is not much to look into. As a bare minimum, please specify in more technical detail what are the exact models of the two "dell laptops" inolved. BIOS or UEFI? What CPU generation are they? What kind of graphics chip? When booting the machine, do you see any initial console messages before switching to graphics mode? Any difference when removing the vga=788 boot parameter? Without sufficient technical details there really is not much that can be done. Thanks.

I'm now starting to suspect something completely different:
The very first login into a new account usually takes a while due to desktop settings being initialized. On a very slow machine this might take an irritatingly long time, as it just shows a blank (=black) screen until it finishes and the desktop appears. Once completed, subsequent future logins should happen almost instantly.
Could this be the case for you?

hi, I appreciate fast response. You didn't state how long delay we are talking about. I dont think its the matter of display initialization delay, since I left the machine for 10mins maybe more. I noticed the cd gets span up every 2-3mins, but the screen remains the same. I never heard of display initialization taking that long on any distribution. Like I said this works fine with build 0.96 and that machine is quite fast. Its a dell Latitude 7480. I haven't tried to install 12.8 only tried live boot.

Update: I tried clean install of 12.8 over 0.96 and everything went well until the first power on and boot. It went ok but then a black screen showed up which is similar symptom I saw with the live boot. So I messed up my good 0.96 install...you have definitely broken something related to display drivers, because like I said this works fine in 0.96. I saw release notes for build 12.8 and it looks like this was a major upgrade, perhaps too big to go all into a single build. Personally I don't think anyone needs to mess with display drivers, unless there is a problem. BTW, I am a software QA engineer. thanks

Are you able to switch to a virtual console pressing for example Ctr-Alt-F5 and then login?
If yes, please switch to root using the command 'sudo su -' and provide a compressed/zipped copy of the /var/log/installer folder, the /var/log/syslog and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log files.
    Thanks

So you actually burned a DVD from the ISO? In order to exclude a faulty DVD, please rather create a bootable USB pen drive as explained in the INSTALL.txt and then use it booting into the live session again. Thanks

Update: I just realized I was running i386 dvd on amd64 PC unintentionally. i386 comes up as latest in sorceforge, maybe this needs to be changed to amd64. Sorry for the noise. I just burned and booted amd64 into live and it came up ok. Thanks for prompt responses guys and sorry for the noise.

Guys I am wondering if there is/was any implementation of NeXTStep trash app in windowmaker? I am sure this has been discussed before.

Apparently, there exists a wmtrash dockapp for WindowMaker, but it is not included with wmlive and won't be due to its rather limited usefulness.
Luckily, there is a dockable trash application integrated with the GWorkspace.app file manager. It can be easily invoked from within GWorkspace's menu "Tools > Show Recycler", or opened directly as /usr/bin/Recycler.

Thanks a lot :) While it does work from the GWorkspace's menu it doesn't work for me from the command line.
