The only thing I would wonder is, what if it wasn't xawtv/motv that is hanging onto /dev/video? Will fuser or a similar program be able to divine the proper PID to kill by looking at /dev/video? Another problem that comes to mind is what happens if they try to restart xawtv and it won't start. I know I'd be getting a call "the computer's broken!!!".
