I don't know why, but when the disk is bigger, the longer UD is thinking. He scans the volume and then is a minute pause while nobody knows what UD is thinking about. For 8 TB drive there is one minute of pause, for smaller disks less. In modern computers UD shouldn't be taking that long time to analyse or compute the defragmentation effects. Something is wrong. This shouldn't be that way.

Thanks for posting, but this won't work. The issue was not UltraDefrag at all. It was Microsoft and another Windows 10 update issue. This is confirmed. I now can no longer update Windows 10 to the latest version due to this issue. Does a purchase of 8.0+ only go to Green Gate Systems or does it still help go toward the GPL project? Is Dimitri involved with Green Gate Systems or at least get something from the purchases? Will development continue on the GPL version from main developers? Are outside contributions still considered that could make it into future releases?

I was thinking of searching for trim capability but https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/desktop/stormgmt/msft-physicaldisk has MediaType which may be relevant. Not sure what is available before Windows 8 and would definitely prefer an override be possible as there are reasons flash media can benefit from defragmentation. This is likely also relevant on bug#89.

It seems Microsoft made some changes to the boot code that now fails for me. They did this mid-March, and they are continuing this trend for the April update. This one also fails for me. If I am lucky, they will fix this by the May update.

Otherwise, let's hope Microsoft will fix the issue on their side. And having them out of the way is surely going to make it easier to defragment the rest of the files. As for finding a large enough contiguous location, why...

Hello, Thank you for your suggestions. The main problem seems to be that when you delete the paging, swap and hibernation files you have to recreate them somehow afterwards. The simplest way is to use Windows API, but unless you have a single large free space gap on the disk the chances are the files will be fragmented after recreation. Also it would be possible to modify internal structures of the file system to place the files exactly where we would like to have them, but that's not safe at all....

Looking here, you seem to have the same problem defragging pagefiles that I do. In short: even at boot time, certain files (notably including pagefile.sys) are already locked by the system. But I think there's a trivial-yet-safe way around that. However, since one man's "brilliant idea" is another man's "I already tried that and it ended badly," I thought I'd run the idea past you. You've been doing this a long time and I expect you'll have some insight to share. In short, I'm suggesting that in...

Thanks for the response. It looks like I can schedule PowerShell scripts to execute that have the ability to check for running processes as well as date/time checks combined. When all conditions are met, I could then launch UltraDefrag. I will experiment with this. This looks to be one way to go about this without too much work.

Hello, As far as I know it is impossible to adjust scheduled tasks so they won't get executed if some other processes are running, so you probably have to write a special program which will run in background and check whether the processes are running or not, for instance, every second. Then, if it detects the processes are running it might stop the defragmentation using the schtasks command and maybe reschedule it using the same command afterwards. Best regards, Dmitri

I would see a boot failure after the defrag fully completed then I rebooted the computer. It was very sporadic, so I never bothered to report this issue.
