"What's news," you ask? It's been a very long time since there have been any changes to this project. Looks like it'll stay that way indefinitely.
Instead, you may consider playing TW-Light, as it is designed to be a lighter, more stable, and easier-to-develop version of Timewarp.

Having said that, if there are folks interested in continuing to develop Timewarp itself, free free to make yourself known. Generally developing the project requires some solid C++ chops. The latest work in progress has all ships from Star Control 1, Star Control 2, and Star Control 3, plus tons of new ships, acceptable AIs, mediocre networking, adjustable everything, multiple games & battlefields & camera views, & more.
The latest stable version has all ships from SC1 & SC2, plus a few from SC3 and a few original, primitive networking & AIs, & more.
