Firstly, thanks for the tool. I have not seen any other tool that does as good a job as this.

Secondly, with the latest update, the 'Spreadsheet Compare Updater' window appears each time I open excel, which is getting annoying. I did use it to update to the latest 1.27.1 and then I changed the 'Check for updates every' to 30 days but the change is not persistent. When I open excel, the installed version and latest version are the same but the window still appears. I am unable to find anywhere to change this setting.

thanks

What do the two lines on the update program say? If both lines on the update program don't say 1.27.1 (1/16/2014 10:25:06 PM), then download and install again.

The settings are stored in %APPDATA%\Spreadsheet Compare\Update Program Settings.ini file (example on W8.1: C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\Spreadsheet Compare\Update Program Settings.ini). You can try changing the value manually. It may be a permissions issue,

Yes, they are both the latest version 1.27.1. Could the window popup be disabled if the version you are using the latest version or is the window needed to check the version?

Yes, changing Update Program Settings.ini fixed the problem for 30 days but it is not a good solution.

    thanks

It's the actual date/time that is used to detect an update, not the 1.27.1 text. Is the date/time the same? The popup should only appear if the two are different, unless you manually run the update program, in which case it will always appear.

What is the exact path of the ini file. I agree that there is no good reason for the program to not be able to change the file. The users folder is there specifically for programs to save settings. Do you have UAC enabled?

Yes, changing the ini worked around the problem. It is not a great solution though, having an interface that indicates you can change the value but no submit button. It is not a permissions problem because the main settings file is in the same folder and it's preferences are kept.

    thanks for your efforts

The update program is separate to Excel, so they could run with different permissions. The other ini file is written exclusively by Excel, so the fact it changes, does not really mean anything. Try running the Update Program as Administrator (On my PC, right click on the file) as see if it will then store the value.
