Original article with working links and images: https://www.supergrubdisk.org/2021/11/14/rescatux-0-74-released/ Rescatux is a Debian GNU/Linux based live cd aimed at GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows rescue tasks thanks to its graphical wizard named Rescapp. Rescatux 0.74 stable version has been just released is available for you to download. Check Rescatux 0.73 release If you already have Rescatux 0.73 there’s no need to download Rescatux 0.74. This is a quick release with almost no changes so this piece of news will be quite short. Please check Rescatux 0.73 released piece of news for the full detail of what Rescatux has in it. The original idea was to work on Super Grub2 Disk but I just realised that I had to update the official Super Grub2 Disk irc channel… and, guess what, Rescatux also uses IRC so it needed a quick update. I have almost not tested this Rescatux version. Was it not to work for you please try Rescatux 0.73 instead. Feedback on stuff that it previously worked ok on Rescatux 0.73 but it no longer works in Rescatux 0.74 on the github issues page is welcomed. Rescatux 0.73 features Rescapp 0.56 Download Rescatux 0.74 ISO ISO & Source code (Git Source code) Checksums Rescatux 0.74 checksums Main changes The last Rescatux stable version was released on April 2020. That’s about one and a half year ago. This is a quick and dirty release in order to change Rescapp default chat irc support channels from Freenode to Libera. As Debian Buster has had some packages updated in the meanwhile it will also feature minor packages updates. This iso is greater than 700 MiB so it does not fill into a CD. You should use an USB. I might try to shrink the iso back into a CD in the future. What’s new on Rescatux (since Rescatux 0.73) Minor packages updates What’s new on Rescapp (since Rescatux 0.73) Support chat rooms have been moved to Libera IRC. Thank you cjg67 for his work on improving Rescapp documentation grammar. cjg67 for his incredible work on packaging Rescapp to Arch and Fedora. (BTW one of these days I need to add a page dedicated to Rescapp where I feature those packages.) eris23 from linuxtracker community who has uploaded many times the Rescatux isos to the torrent site. Many anonymous users which create new bugs at rescapp issues page. Many anonymous users which came back to the Rescatux chat after trying our given advice in the chat Alf Gaida (agaida) on the many times he has helped me on integrating LXQt to Rescatux. bTactic, for helping Rescatux with their Zimbra based email service and their hosting. Interview Q: Tell us about Rescatux. Where, how and why? A: Before Grub2 was the norm there was Grub which was able to edit minimally your system (install grub on the mbr). I develop a GUI around it named Super Grub Disk, later on I improved it by modifying its source code. But then Grub2 started to be used by default in many distributions. Super Grub2 Disk was born, a GUI around Grub2 but, guess what, it couldn’t install grub on the mbr. So a live cd was needed and I started to tinker with Rescatux around 2010. Q: For those people that still do not know Rescatux, can you please explain what Rescatux is? A: It’s a Debian GNU/Linux based live cd aimed at rescue tasks. It features Rescapp a graphical wizard for helping to recover your system. Q: Why did you choose the Rescatux name? A: In Spanish it might mean Rescate Linux. And in English Rescue a Tux computer. I also wanted one single name (contrary to the three words from Super Grub2 Disk). Q: Who’s in charge of the development? A: Most of the development is done by me, adrian15. Many people have helped all along these almost ten years. Q: What’s the Rescatux target audience? A: GNU/Linux newbies such as Ubuntu users in 2015 and MX Linux users in 2020. It’s also targeted to repair technicians and, of course, distro hoppers. Q: What are the main difficulties on developing Rescatux? A1: Lack of time. A2: When I’m able to build on Debian 9, then Debian 10 appears and I have to rethink all of it. A3: live-build, one of the Debian tools for making live cds was not as good as I needed it to be and I needed to improve it, then push back the changes to upstream. A4: Getting useful feedback from people who uses Rescatux (even having an integrated chat) is difficult. A5: Nobody has steped in to add CI/CD and check if Rescatux always fixes the same problems. We would need something similar to what ReactOS and Tails do on their projects. A6: Lack of contributors. This is not a tool where, as a developer, you can learn useful skills for your everyday work unless you are GNU/Linux repair technician. A7: I prefer QT but Gparted, Firefox and other projects are based on GTK and make Rescatux iso slightly bigger. A8: UEFI, Secure Boot and what not. We live in a time where old BIOS systems and new UEFI systems are available. Both need to be supported and also Secure Boot. And trying to test Secure Boot in a virtual machine is not easy. You cannot use Virtualbox but you need to setup and user KVM/Qemu in special ways. And many UEFI firmwares are not very well programmed. Q: What are the main collaborations or help you received on Rescatux ? A: The most recent contributor is cjg67 which helped a lot on improving written English in Rescapp. It’s also nice that many Linux magazines write articles about it and even record DVDs with Rescatux in them. Q: Can you tell us anything about the Rescatux future? A: Rescapp, the main Rescatux program is stable. It might need some options reorganisation (feedback is welcomed) or some documentation rewriting. But it is stable. My mid term goal on Rescatux is bringing back my work on live-boot, live-build, liveid, chntpw (which I will fork), and rescapp back to Debian. If one such goal is achieved one could be able to install rescapp on a Debian live cd thanks to the apt-get command. Pinging back the Press ALL: How to test the iso. What really piss me off is those people which create a new empty virtual machine and start up Rescatux cdrom without any installed operating system in their virtual machine. This might be ok for your regular GNU/Linux distribution live cd but not for Rescatux. You are not going to enjoy how Rescapp recover your boot and al. Please setup a dual boot (e.g. Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04) environment and try to play with Rescapp boot options. Forget your GNU/Linux password on purpose. If you try the EFI mode in Virtualbox remember that you never have to power off the machine. Just reboot it from inside your installation or save the vm state and later on resume it. Else you might find out that you lose the your recently installed UEFI menu. Finally if you are expert enough try to setup a KVM/Qemu with actual Secure Boot instead. ALL: More than Rescapp. You might be tempted to skip the boot menues and the Rescatux startup wizard in your explanations because the useful thing is Rescapp. Don’t miss the opportunity to talk about it because it ensures to be shown in the middle of two screens and allows Rescatux to be accessed via VNC. Change your keyboard and so on. Distrowatch: Thank you for helping me to bring Rescatux and Super Grub2 Disk to your audience. Rescatux is targeted at newbie Ubuntu users (which I guess that nowadays are the newbie MX Linux users), repair technicians and distro hoppers. Hopefully one day I can find time to develop a new standard based on rss so that you can keep track of new distribution releases in a semi-automated way. BTW if you come from Distrowatch weekly where this announcement is featured your feedback is welcomed in the DW comments. I’ll try to participate and solve doubts if anyone has them. Linux Magazine: Thank you for making your 167 number Fast Help article free for everyone to read. Ferdinand Thommes (the article writer) came into the Rescatux irc channel back in the day for having updated feedback from us. It was nice meeting him. Linux Magazine: Your 228 issue had a DVD with Super Grub2 Disk. The DVD label mockup should have had the version (2.04s1 or whatever) in addition to Super Grub2. E.g. Super Grub2 2.04s1. Anyways I’m grateful and at the same time amazed because this is about 17 MB burned into a 4.3 GiB DVD side !!! Once I manage to add Secure Boot support to Super Grub2 Disk I need to build an iso that features both SG2D and Rescatux so that not so much space is wasted. Destination Linux: I watched your DL138 episode (48 minute). I liked Noah explanation on saying that when Grub does not boot it it’s usually a synthom that something else is bad. Hopefully one day you cover Rescatux release. Carey Holzman: I enjoy watching you repairing computers. One of the last episodes I saw was LIVE – Tech-Vets show #150 where I learnt how the new worldwide state was being dealt in the U.S.A. and among computer repair men. I also enjoyed your rant on your wife employer not giving her a laptop and a separate internet connection. I guess Parted Magic (which it’s a paying product) is more suited for many of your tasks but it would be nice you could try Rescatux and give me some live feedback that I can use back to improve Rescatux usability or functionality. It’s usually hard for me to receive useful feedback. Usually people are in a hurry to use Rescatux and if it doesn’t work they switch to another solution. MuyLinux: I sent you an email many years ago telling you that Rescatux was going to be released as an stable version very soon. It seems I lied to you XD. You have invited me many times to write an article about Rescatux (which I have declined because I preferred to work on improving Rescatux) but I think I will leave it to you. After all if I write it myself I might lose the opportunity on grasping how Rescatux is perceived by someone other than me. Barrapunto: Hi kandinski! Hopefully one day you can surprise all of us and reopen the site. I miss writing in my own bitacora. Meneame (not the site owners but its community): Message for the one who brings potatoes: This is a proud GNU/Linux distribution. I should write it down more often. Hopefully the GNU and Tux background makes you happy enough to forgive me not writing GNU/Linux after everytime I write Rescatux. I have thought on bringing back my barrapunto bitacora back as meneame articles but I’m not quite convinced. Any replacement for Barrapunto that you recommend me? Thank you. If you are commenting on a new Rescatux article on meneame make sure to ask your doubts there. I might be around and reply to them 😉 . Linux Format: I enjoyed your Rescue distros roundup on LXF209 where Rescatux won. On LXF250 you mentioned that Rescatux was not maintained and that’s why it was not considered. I was disappointed till I checked that at that time (June 2019) latest Rescatux distribution release was from December 2017. Yes, I had done some internal builds from November 2018 where I tried once again to use LXQT but I hadn’t made it public, so, it didn’t exist. Funny enough on May 2019 (probably after the article was written) Rescatux 0.71-beta7 was released. Anyways Rescatux being perceived as disappeared encouraged me to work hard on it so that we finally had an stable release. So thank you! Linux Format: Some notes on updating Rescue distros roundup from LXF209 to match Rescatux 0.73: Tools repository: I removed the external Boot Repair tool although it has many tools. [No change.] (4/5) Customisability: No one has shown interest in being able to build its own custom Rescatux so I haven’t worked on it. [No change.] (2/5) User experience: Thanks to the new status frame where you can see what Rescapp does the usability is even better than before. [No change.] (5/5) Support & rescue docs: The current documentation and videos on the website are aging a bit but a lot of work has been put into generating a proper inline documentation that you can read from Rescatux itself (without an internet connection). [No change.] (5/5) Security features: Current iso also has GPGV and shred but I didn’t put them on purpose. Security is not a priority. You can drop one point if you want to. [-1] (1/5) Custom tools and UIs: Yeah, now Rescatux not only has Rescapp but a Rescatux startup wizard which assists you to change display resolution, locale, vnc or keyboard layout. (6/5)… I mean… [No change.] (5/5) 😉 . Healing capabilities: Boot Repair tool is no longer there but many UEFI options have been added. [No change.] (4/5) The verdict [No change.] (5/5) Linux Format: Tux with fingers should not be! you say. Not only I managed to show a penguin that almost drowned but I also made it more human by giving him fingers. I only will say that it made sense when I first thought about it XD. Rescatux background no longer features the humanoid-drowning-tux but a GNU and a Linux images. Website images, to your concern, won’t be updated in the short term, so you will see the humanoid-drowning-tux once in a while 😉 . Linux Format: I checked the LXF259 DVD iso and you have a pretty nice system based on Grub. It supports booting from both BIOS and UEFI (IA32 and AMD64) systems. Congratulations! Super Grub2 Disk is less than 17 MB in size. I want to release an special ‘script’ release in the future so that you can just configfile its cfg which it’s the right way of using it. Linux Format: On the LXF259 DVD iso you feature Rescatux. It’s nice how you can use your parser (aimed at live-build disks) and create a Rescatux boot entry. Can you please improve it by supporting loopback.cfg (and thus liveid)? menuentry "Rescatux X.YY" { iso_path=/Rescatux/rescatux-0.72-beta4.iso export iso_path #search --set=root --file $iso_path loopback loop $iso_path root=(loop) configfile /boot/grub/loopback.cfg loopback --delete loop } Forward pinging MX Linux: I know you have a tool named MX Boot Repair. It’s not easy to predict when I’ll be able to add Rescapp to Debian properly. It would be nice if you could evaluate Rescapp as a replacement for your MX Boot Repair. What features you are missing from it. And, maybe, if you need an special start switch so that only two or three options are shown to your live cd users. You can find Debian Buster based repo in Rescatux repo and you can also use the quick script on Non-free Rescatux documentation. And make sure the user which runs rescapp can sudo any command he wants to (as it usually happens in Live CDs). What about the future My plans on future development : Unspecified pause Soften Super Grub2 Disk AFD prank Working on adding Secure Boot to Super Grub2 Disk Maybe improving Rescapp documentation, release new stable Rescapp and Rescatux releases Probably also releasing a Super Grub2 Disk version based on GNU/GRUB 2.06 version Maybe work on a new Rescatux webpage Update Rescatux images to remove Tux with fingers so that Linux Format magazine guys stop complaining (and because we have better background and logo designs right now 😉 ) Push live-boot liveid improvements back to Debian Push live-build Rescatux improvements back to Debian Work on Super Grub2 Disk script release so that Linux Format Guys can include a working version of Super Grub2 Disk on their multiarch enabled DVDs Getting back Rescatux improvements on live-build and live-boot to upstream (Debian) Fork chntpw properly into another name Make chntpw fork a proper Debian package Make rescapp non arch dependent (all package in Debian) Make rescapp a proper Debian package Release a Rescatux version based on Debian 11 (Bullseye) Trying to push a graphical rescue flavour into Debian itself almost (but not better than) as good as Rescatux. Hello, I just downloaded rescatux and found after burning it to cd, that it will not boot on my system. I have tried the "auto" and both the amd64 failsafe and normal. It is due to the fact that the R600 firmware required for my built in video card has not been included in the image. Could this issue be fixed so that I can try this? Regards, Christopher. |

Please note that ISO is currently being uploaded. Either wait two hours after receiving this email or make sure to check its md5sum. Location where you will find rescatux-0.71-beta7.iso: https://sourceforge.net/projects/rescatux/files/rescatux-0.71-beta7/ If you have an ia32-only UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot enabled you can help me. You will notice that you have an ia32-only UEFI BIOS because USBs or CDROM which are only compatible with amd64 bios do not boot on yours. Can you please check if both options boot flawlessly for you? Option 1) IA32. Secure Boot on. Amd64 Kernel Option 2) IA32. Secure Boot on. 686 Kernel Otherwise if you manage yourself with kvm, ovmf and so on... you can help setting up a virtual environment where I can test it myself. (Reused email to send it to rescatux mailing list so that I can gather feedback also from my Rescatux users.) Hello, I'm gathering feedback about adding a new feature to GNU/Linux live cds. The feature is called liveid and its current explanation (the one I'm copying here) is found at: https://github.com/rescatux/liveid/blob/bd17ef06eaa97c445974399d489e64b6ddaa0338/README.md . The most updated explanation would be found at: https://github.com/rescatux/liveid/blob/proposal-v1/README.md I'm sending this email to myself and to a bunch of people which I consider their feedback might be a good one. In order to keep each one privacy I'm BCCing everyone of you. Feel free to direct me to another email from your project if you feel I didn't manage to send this email to the correct person. You can give me your feedback in two diferent ways: * You can reply to my own email. * You can also oan issue on the liveid repo: https://github.com/rescatux/liveid/issues if you want to have a public discussion. I'm not sure creating an ad-hoc mailing list is worth of it but if you think it's worth it please let me know. The most similar thing to a mailing list is this bug thread: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=924053 where some of the discussion started. So, let me copy and paste the proposal content so that I can avoid you clicking on a link and hopefully I will get some feedback from you. You, know, getting people to adhere to this sort of standard in the free software world is not going to be easy but I feel there's a lack of communication between the people who develops tools for building live cds and the ones who remaster them into multi distro usbs and the like. So I needed to try it. * liveid GNU/Linux Live CD / USB ID (liveid) proposal * What is liveid? It's a proposal to try to make it easier to identify GNU/Linux live CDs (Nowadays are also available to be put in USB but we will call them live cds anyways). * Why do we need liveid? Live CDs should be able to detect themselves when booted either from a CD or an USB. * Additional liveid benefits CD Remaster tools to be able to improve their tools and avoid their generated live CDs to conflict (detect an unexpected live CD and try to boot into it). * Original issue Having found boot issues factory installed HP machines issues while trying a live-build generated iso (Rescatux) More information at : live-build: UEFI shows grub> on HP250 G6 2SX60EA . * Problem 1 - Finding grub.cfg This is a recent problem that face Secure Boot enabled GNU/Linux live cds. Debian implementation of Secure Boot in live-build involves using a cut version of grub where most of the modules have been removed. That means, in practice, that this grub instance does not know how to find the live cd's grub.cfg file. The current implementation: search --set=root --file /live/vmlinuz set prefix=($root)/boot/grub configfile ($root)/boot/grub/grub.cfg tries to identify where the /boot/grub/grub.cfg should be by searching on all of the grub devices for the /live/vmlinuz file. At first glance this is a better approach than searching for /boot/grub/grub.cfg file. Why? Because if you already have an installed GNU/Linux operating system in your computer it's highly likely that it has grub2 as its bootloader with its usual /boot/grub/grub.cfg. So instead of searching for grub.cfg file which would have booted your internal hard disk GNU/Linux (instead of the external one) we search for /live/vmlinuz. Why? Because such a file like /live/vmlinuz is only used on live CDs. Well, this is not actually true. /live/vmlinuz is used in factory-installed-HPs cause they use a live-build base system to show its documentation and warranty. This file would be also be a problem if you happen to connect two GNU/Linux Live USBs at the same time and your firmware (BIOS/UEFI) shows both of them to grub. My first easy approach on solving this problem was using /.disk/info file instead. This might be a workaround for avoiding problems with factory-installed-HPs computers but it's postponing the big problem here. When you install a distribution into an internal hard disk you usually use filesystem UUIDs for detecting that particular installation. That's the way it should be done also in live cds/usbs. * Problem 2 - Finding squashfs file Space is not cheap. Most of GNU/Linux live cds use compressed read-only file systems which sometimes are mixed with ram so that they can be writable (not on your cdrom or usb but on ram). This lets you put, say, 1 GB into a 700 MB disk. So basically if you open a live-build generated cdrom you will find this huge file named: /live/filesystem.squashfs . I'm going to repeat myself again. When you install a distribution into an internal hard disk you usually use filesystem UUIDs for detecting that particular installation. So that means that your bootloader, usually grub2 knows how to find your installation kernel and your installation initrd. menuentry mylinux insmod gzio insmod part_gpt insmod ext2 set root='hd0,gpt5' if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,gpt5 --hint-efi=hd0,gpt5 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,gpt5 b51cdb6a-e9db-4e19-9f1e-fe7a7fcd7c87 else search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root b51cdb6a-e9db-4e19-9f1e-fe7a7fcd7c87 fi echo 'Loading Linux 4.9.0-4-amd64...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.9.0-4-amd64 root=UUID=b51cdb6a-e9db-4e19-9f1e-fe7a7fcd7c87 ro resume=/dev/sda7 video=efifb i915.lvds_channel_mode=2 i915.modeset=1 i915.lvds_use_ssc=0 log_buf_len=16M echo 'Loading ramdisk...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-4.9.0-4-amd64 It boots into them passing the filesystem UUID as a kernel parametre and the kernel loads the initrd into memory (that's why it's an init ram disk). The initrd is the one which actually searches for the filesystem UUID. Both the kernel and the initrd have the minimal components to be able to find that specific filesystem UUID, mount that filesystem UUID and continue with the usual GNU/Linux boot process where daemons and services begin to start and do something useful. As I said that's a job mainly done by initrd. In the case of live-build its initrd is being built thanks to live-boot package. So what's the filesystem UUID search equivalent on live-boot 1 2? LIVE_MEDIA_PATH="live" is_live_path() { DIRECTORY="${1}/${LIVE_MEDIA_PATH}" for FILESYSTEM in squashfs ext2 ext3 ext4 xfs dir jffs do if ls "${DIRECTORY}/"*.${FILESYSTEM} > /dev/null 2>&1 then return 0 fi done return 1 } Well, basically live-boot is searching for: /live/*.squashfs /live/*.ext2 /live/*.ext3 /live/*.ext4 /live/*.xfs /live/*.dir /live/*.jffs which matches with: /live/filesystem.squashfs file. And, guess what, there is such an squashfs file in some factory-installed-HPs computers which converts a normal GNU/Linux live cd boot into this prompt: Progress Linux 1.9 . * loopback.cfg solution Before going into what would be the liveid technical proposal I would like to share loopback.cfg with CD remaster tools developers. loopback.cfg is designed to solve two problems: No need to unpack the ISO to be able to boot from it. No need to figure out the different boot options. The distro gives them for you. loopback.cfg asummes you are either using a bootloader capable of loop-mounting an iso9660 file (such grub2) or that previously unpacked only the kernel and its initrd. You can find more information about loopback.cfg in https://www.supergrubdisk.org/wiki/Loopback.cfg. I am sure the wiki page can be improved a lot so that the different users of it (Distro developer, remaster tool developer and final user) know what they are supposed to do with it. Given an iso with loopback.cfg in it you should be able to boot into it thanks to: menuentry "TITLE" { iso_path=PATH export iso_path search --set=root --file $iso_path loopback loop $iso_path root=(loop) configfile /boot/grub/loopback.cfg loopback --delete loop } . An example would be: menuentry "TITLE" { iso_path=/myisos/rescatux-0.71b2.iso export iso_path search --set=root --file $iso_path loopback loop $iso_path root=(loop) configfile /boot/grub/loopback.cfg loopback --delete loop } The distro needs to support loopback.cfg and usually it supports a findiso= kernel parametre which it's used by its initrd. The only problems about GNU/Linux cds not being identified correctly would happen if you had this same exact path and filename: /myisos/rescatux-0.71b2.iso in more than one partition. That's highly unlikely. Anyway what I meant to say here is that if you are already using loopback.cfg then the liveid solution might not be needed at all. The iso file path and filename takes care of it for you. * liveid - Restrictions We already explained Problem 1 - Finding grub.cfg where grub2 needs to find the media where its grub.cfg is found. Using grub2 limits us a lot because they do not have a way of saving first line of a file into a variable. MYLINE=$(head -n 1 /tmp/myfile.txt) . And even if they had you would have to find a way to search for this file and then try to read it and, then, if it its content does not match what you expected then you have to loop into another result of the search. And that makes it awful to implement. Take a look at this hipotetical grub menu code: search --set=uuidroot --file /live/uuid headone --set=uuidcontent ($uuidroot)/live/uuid if [ "$uuidcontent" == "123e4567-e89b-12d3-a456-426655440000" ] ; then set root=($uuidroot) set prefix=($root)/boot/grub configfile ($root)/boot/grub/grub.cfg else echo "How do I search for the same file on next device?" fi So what we want is a name that we can compare with our UUID. * live id - Proposal 1 ** UUID generation UUID should be generated at build time and it has to identify a given ISO. Basically at build time, instead of generating a random UUID, you concatenate a series of build variables that make unique your CD. Then you hash them so that you have something that changes a lot when a byte from your build variables have changed. In the case of md5sum the result matches to an 32 hexadecimal result. Why you don't want a random UUID? Because we want the build process to be reproducible. We can just save the resultant UUID into the live cd as: /LIVEID/123E4567/E89B12D3/A4564266/55440000 . (Note the capital letters) ** Finding grub.cfg - Solution The minimal grub.cfg for Secure Boot can be generated at build time: search --set=root --file /LIVEID/123E4567/E89B12D3/A4564266/55440000 set prefix=($root)/boot/grub configfile ($root)/boot/grub/grub.cfg ** Finding squashfs file - Solution (You can do the same with isolinux boot entries.) So, where you had before: menuentry "Live system, kernel 4.19.0-2-amd64" { linux /live/vmlinuz-4.19.0-2-amd64 boot=live config quiet splash locales=en_US.UTF-8 initrd /live/initrd.img-4.19.0-2-amd64 } now you have: menuentry "Live system, kernel 4.19.0-2-amd64" { linux /live/vmlinuz-4.19.0-2-amd64 liveid=/LIVEID/123E4567/E89B12D3/A4564266/55440000 boot=live config quiet splash locales=en_US.UTF-8 initrd /live/initrd.img-4.19.0-2-amd64 } ** How to implement live id Find a way to identify your iso and convert that string into an UUID Modify your minimal Secure Boot image cfg generator to search for such an UUID Modify your live's initrd to take into account the liveid parametre. ** Extra features This might be useful for remaster tools in order to get the correct name of the distro and, also, to identify the type of it. /LIVEID/VENDOR: Ubuntu /LIVEID/NAME: Bionic Beaver /LIVEID/VERSION: 18.04 /LIVEID/BUILDTOOL: Casper 1.394 /LIVEID/UUID: /LIVEID/123E4567/E89B12D3/A4564266/55440000 Note: I don't actually know what Ubuntu people are using to build their live cds. Several years ago I thought it was Casper but I might be wrong on that. Pull requests are welcomed to fix this. * live id - Proposal 2 - DISCARDED ** UUID generation UUID should be generated at build time and it has to identify a given ISO. Basically at build time, instead of generating a random UUID, you concatenate a series of build variables that make unique your CD. Then you hash them so that you have something that changes a lot when a byte from your build variables have changed. Finally you can shrink the result to a 8.3 file. Thomas Schmitt says: Even in a conservative 8.3 name it would be possible to expose 56 bit with a birthday paradox threshold of 256 million. A plain hex encoding could expose 44 bit of random id (~ 4 million children in the class). This is not as good enough as an UUID we can do it better. * live id - Proposal 3 - DISCARDED ** UUID generation UUID should be generated at build time and it has to identify a given ISO. Basically at build time, instead of generating a random UUID, you concatenate a series of build variables that make unique your CD. Then you hash them so that you have something that changes a lot when a byte from your build variables have changed. An UUID like: 123e4567-e89b-12d3-a456-426655440000 means 32 characters. That might be encoded in four files such as: /liveid/123e4567.001 /liveid/e89b12d3.002 /liveid/a4564266.003 /liveid/55440000.004 This is too complex for searching for grub. * Feedback needed I was going to implement this new way of identying live cds in live-build so that I could use in Rescatux. Although I have contributed to live-build (and live-boot in the past) I don't consider myself as a developer of live cd build tools. And, as made my own distro, Rescatux, I often Refuse to use remaster tools to put many distros into a usb. I'm sure that many live cd remaster tools do not know about isolinux.cfg. And I'm concerned about them not using the liveid parametre because of them wanting to put each one of the distro contents on several directories. So I need feedback from both the people who develop tools to build live CDs as well as feedback from people who develop CD remaster tools. For the live cd build tools developers I would ask them if they find this difficult to implement. And for the remaster tools developers I would ask them, discarding the Secure Boot minimal grub, if cdrom isos with this new liveid proposal applied to them were to be found in the wild... if they would have any problem on remastering them. At first the OS just booted to a flashing cursor. Rescatux restored the MBR and it went to "NO OS Found" Grub restore failed. Since it's been approximately 20 hours since I sent the original email I have already reinstalled Mint. The caveat is that the hard drive has about 30Kb of bad sectors and seems to behave eratically - browser crashes at times and the computer just shuts off at times. I just put this SSD in which I bought off eBay and it was sold as being in perfect condition. Turns out to have errors. I'm not very happy with my purchase to say the least. Hi Rescatux Recipients, My system originally was a 120GB SSD with Absolute Linux and Linux Mint dual booting in a 30GB / 80GB respective configuration. My Mint on the 80GB (Ver 19 Tara) became full after a lot of work setting it up so I deleted the SDA1 Absolute Linux and formatted to BTRFS same as the Mint SDA3 Partition. This seems to have blown out my MBR and GRUB config and I've set the flag for the 80GB to bootable, but on bootup there is a no OS found error. I'm attaching my logs if there is any way to get it working again I have data and app settings I don't want to lose. Thanks in advance for any help! Please don't hesitate if there are things I'm omitting for info to let me know! Jason Ducharme |

Original piece of news: https://www.supergrubdisk.org/2017/12/10/ubuntu-feedback-on-rescapp-needed/ where the download links do work and everything is prettier. Repo: https://www.supergrubdisk.org/other-stuff/rescatux-package-repository/ Rescapp issues: https://github.com/rescatux/rescapp/issues While we wait for Rescatux to be rewritten, once again, so that it’s based on Debian 9 (Stretch) its main program: Rescapp needs some love. Some testing. Some polishment. Rescapp program has been rewritten so that: It no longer depends on SELinux It depends on PyQT5 instead of the now obsolete PyQT4 That means that it can be built for recent versions of Ubuntu, packaged and put into a repo. So if you want to help Rescatux / Rescapp development and you happen to have either a: Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial AMD64 Live CD or an Ubuntu 17.10 Artful AMD64 Live CD you are welcome to test Rescatux repo and report any bugs that you find on the Rescapp issues page. adrian15 -- Support free software. Original piece of news: https://www.supergrubdisk.org/2017/12/10/rescatux-0-51-beta-3-released/ where the download links do work and everything is prettier. Rescatux 0.51 beta 3 has been released. Rescatux 0.41 beta 1 new options Rescatux 0.41 beta 1 new options Update UEFI order in action Update UEFI order in action Downloads: Rescatux 0.51 beta 3 Cdrom or USB ISO for x86 or amd64 (Sourceforge) (MD5) Rescatux 0.51b3 size is about 640 Megabytes. Some thoughts: Boot Repair functionality has been removed from Rescatux. Many people, somehow, were using Boot Repair (by default) inside Rescatux while we don’t support it. If you feel Rescapp does not cover all the Boot Repair functionality you can fill a bug for a RFE (Request for Enhacement). Rescapp and chntpw are now installed from a Repo. It should be virtually identical to 0.41b1 release. If something doesn’t work as well as before please report a bug so that we can fix it. This is the last build based on Debian 8 (Jessie). Important notice: If you want to use the UEFI options make sure you use DD or another equivalent tool (Rufus in ‘Direct image’ mode, usb imagewriter, etc.) to put Rescatux in your USB If you want to use UEFI options make sure you boot your Rescatux device in UEFI mode If you want to use Rescatux make sure you temporarly disable Secure Boot. Rescatux does not support booting in Secure Boot mode but it should be able to fix most of the UEFI Secure Boot problems if booted in Non Secure Boot mode. More things I want to do before the stable release are: Making all the source code available but as I have mentioned on the Debian Live mailing list it is not easy. Make clear that ‘Extra tools’ are not supported renaming them to ‘Extra tools (Non supported)’ Internal documentation updated A new Rescatux website (Optional) A new Rescatux tutorial video or videos (Optional) Let’s hope it happens sooner than later. Some thoughts: I couldn’t have released an stable Rescatux without UEFI options so I had to add them. So here there are. Please test them and give us feedback either on the mailing list or in the bugs. Depending on how these new options replace Boot Repair functionality I will remove it from Rescatux. Many people, somehow, are using Boot Repair inside Rescatux while we don’t support it and that should be fixed in the next Rescatux stable release. This new beta release comes with new exciting UEFI options: Update UEFI order Create a new UEFI Boot entry UEFI Partition Status Fake Microsoft Windows UEFI Hide Microsoft Windows UEFI Reinstall Microsoft Windows EFI Check UEFI Boot I will explain these in detail here. This will probably go into the features page in the future. * New option: Update UEFI order option ** Show all available UEFI boot entries and lets you order them * New option: Create a new UEFI Boot entry. ** Select an EFI file among those present in the ESP partition and add them to the UEFI boot ** Make it the default boot entry * New option: UEFI Partition Status to know if an ESP partition is a proper ESP partition or not ** Checks if fdisk detects it as an esp partition ** Checks esp flag on the partition ** Checks boot flag on the partition ** Checks if there's a valid filesystem (fat12,fat16 or fat32) on the partition ** Checks if the partition can be mounted ** Checks if the partition' hard disk type is either gpt or msdos * New option: Fake Microsoft Windows UEFI boot entry ** Select an EFI file and overwrite the Microsoft EFI files ** Rename it to 'Windows Boot Manager' too. * New option: Hide Microsoft Windows UEFI boot entry and define default fallback one. ** Select an EFI file and overwrite the default EFI one ** Make sure to delete the default Microsoft Windows ones ** This should be useful for fault UEFIs as the HP EliteBook 8460p or HP EliteBook 8460p laptops * New option: Reinstall Microsoft Windows EFI ** It copies UEFI files from Windows installation into EFI System Partiton (ESP) ** It adds a new 'Windows Boot Manager' entry and makes it the default one. ** Unfortunately this option is unable to regenerate BCD so it's only useful when you only overwrite or lose the UEFI files There haven been also many usability improvements to make the life of the final user easier: * Now EFI System partitions are shown properly in the Rescapp menues * Now partition types are shown in partition dialogs in the Rescapp menues * Now partition flags are shown in partition dialogs in the Rescapp menues * Now partition os-prober long names are shown in partition dialogs in the Rescapp menues * Show 'Unknown GNU/Linux distro' if we ever fail to parse an /etc/issue file. * order.py: Usability improvement. When moving entries the last entry moved keeps selected. * Rescatux width has been increased to 800 pixels. * Added AFD scanning tecnology adapted for Spanish systems. * Many grubeasy option improvements (Now handles UEFI too) Important notice: If you want to use the UEFI options make sure you use DD or another equivalent tool (Rufus in ‘Direct image’ mode, usb imagewriter, etc.) to put Rescatux in your USB If you want to use UEFI options make sure you boot your Rescatux device in UEFI mode If you want to use Rescatux make sure you temporarly disable Secure Boot. Improvements (0.32b1): Super Grub2 Disk is no longer included. That makes easier to put the ISO to USB devices thanks to standard multiboot tools which support Debian Live cds. Rescapp UI has been redesigned Every option is at hand at the first screen. Rescapp options can be scrolled. That makes it easier to add new options without bothering on final design. Run option screen buttons have been rearranged to make it easier to read. RazorQT has been replaced by LXDE which seems more mature. LXQT will have to wait. WICD has been replaced by network-manager-gnome. That makes easier to connect to wired and wireless networks. It is no longer based on Debian Unstable (sid) branch. Distro facts: Packages versions for this release can be found at Rescatux 0.40b11 packages. It’s based mainly on Debian Jessie (Stable). Some packages are from Debian Unstable (sid). Original piece of news: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/2016/09/24/rescatux-0-40-beta-11-released/ where the download links do work and everything is prettier. Rescatux 0.40 beta 11 has been released. Rescatux 0.40 beta 11 - Performing Filesystem check Rescatux 0.40 beta 11 – Filesystem check shows its progress Downloads: Rescatux 0.40 beta 11 Cdrom or USB ISO for x86 or amd64 (Sourceforge) (MD5) Rescatux 0.40b11 size is about 671 Megabytes. Some thoughts: This release comes with one of the most exciting improvements in many years: Most of the options show its subtasks progress while working. That means that the final user will not doubt about Rescatux being frozen or not while he sees an apparently frozen screen. I have been working on making all the source code available but as I have mentioned on the Debian Live mailing list it is not easy. Another big improvement towards usability is renaming the older ‘Not detected’ partitions to: ‘Windows / Data / Other’ so that people don’t get confused. Many people think their windows is not being detected while there is a windows there. I guess the partition selection entries could be improved in the future so that they show the actual Windows name (Thanks to os-prober algorithms) and also the filesystem type. Many other smalls bug fixes have been done. You can check the git log for more details. I have decided not to release stable release till I add one or two UEFI related options. The one about ordering UEFI boot entries would be there for sure. The current roadmap had been planned for 2012 so it needs some update. It’s true that current Rescatux supports booting from an UEFI system and that if you had already installed grub-efi it reinstalls it in its UEFI partition. But it’s also true that one or two more UEFI options are needed so that magazines stop advising to use Boot Repair inside Rescatux. More things I want to do before the stable release are: Make clear that ‘Extra tools’ are not supported renaming them to ‘Extra tools (Non supported)’ Internal documentation updated A new Rescatux website (Optional) A new Rescatux tutorial video or videos (Optional) Add more AFD functionality Let’s hope it happens sooner than later. UEFI feedback is still welcome. Specially if the Debian installation disks work for you but not the Rescatux ones. Original piece of news: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/2016/08/27/rescatux-0-40-beta-9-released/ where the download links do work and everything is prettier. Rescatux 0.40 beta 9 has been released. Rescatux 0.40 beta 9 - New features - Easy GNU/Linux Boot Fix & Easy Windows Admin Rescatux 0.40 beta 9 – New features – Easy GNU/Linux Boot Fix & Easy Windows Admin Downloads: Rescatux 0.40 beta 9 Cdrom or USB ISO for x86 or amd64 (Sourceforge) (MD5) Rescatux 0.40b9 size is about 671 Megabytes. Some thoughts: Putting aside the need for making sure USB automount is disabled and other burocratic tasks I think this release would be pretty similar to the next stable release. This release comes with some exciting new features: Easy GNU/Linux Boot Fix : This option combines three previous options of Rescapp into one: Force a filesystem check, update grub menus and finally restore grub into the mbr (or efi). At the same time it guides non technical savvy people to use this option because it’s under Boot (which it’s a new group of options). Easy Windows Admin : This option provides you the ability to take back control of a Windows installation by the means of: Unlocking, promoting to Admin and blanking the password of a given Windows account. Many code in the grub side and in the windows registry side has been rewritten so that these new features could be rewritten. As a consequence it will be easier to maintain Rescapp. Finally the chntpw based options which modify the Windows registry now perform a backup of the Windows registry files in the unlikely case you want to undo some of the changes that Rescapp performs. I guess that in the future there will be a feature to be able to restore such backups from Rescapp itself, but, let’s focus on releasing an stable release. It’s been a while since the last one. UEFI feedback is still welcome. Specially if the Debian installation disks work for you but not the Rescatux ones. Fixed when falling back to LXDE. Double-clicking on directories on desktop opens Iceweasel (Firefox fork) instead of a file manager. Fixed when falling back to LXDE. Distro facts: Packages versions for this release can be found at Rescatux 0.40b8 packages. It’s based mainly on Debian Jessie (Stable). Some packages are from Debian Unstable (sid).
