Hi, I am attempting to code a python bot for realtimebattle 1.0.8, running on Cygwin and Python 2.4.1. The python example included with the distribution (razziel) froze RTB. When I added a line to the while loop (x=3Draw_input('')), the bot worked, but the color and name are not specifi= ed. This is about as simple as it gets, so here is an example with razziel: This produces a robot that moves about the arena and fires, but does not se= t a name (I have tried various settings of "robot startup time" in options): #! /usr/bin/python print 'RobotOption 3 0\n' print 'RobotOption 1 1\n' print 'Name razziel\n' print 'Colour 005500 330066\n' x=3Draw_input('') while (x !=3D 'Dead') or (x !=3D 'GameFinishes'): print 'Accelerate 0.5\n' print 'Rotate 7 3\n' for i in range(0,10): print 'Shoot 10\n' x=3Draw_input('') However, if the entire while loop is commented out, the (then unmoving) robot does set a name. When I log the stdin, I find that I get "Warning 5" which appears to suggest that the key words are not correct; however, I cannot see what is wrong. I am not too concerned about this because I can create nameless bots that work; however, I would like to know if I am missing something about how Python communicates to RTB with stdin/stdout. I= f anybody has an example of a Python bot that works correctly, I would love t= o see it. Cheers, J. |

Hello, I am trying to write a robot for Realtimebattle, and am finding that the Coordinates are not being updated (I have set the option Send robot coordinates: 1 and I've tried with a value of 2). The Coordinates message gets sent, but it stays at the first value and is never changed, even though I see my robot moving on the screen. Am I doing something stupid here? I want to check, before I try to dig into the rtb code to find the problem. thanks, Brian Blais -- ----------------- bb...@br... http://web.bryant.edu/~bblais |

About this, and about the robot included into realtime for now, I've a request/question: some of them doesn't include a copyright: empty, perl, raziel, rotate_and_fire, seek_and_destroy, and some other does contain a copyright, but with no licence (that i can understood): jBot, perl-skeleton. It make them difficult to include in the debian package because we try to not include things we are not sure they are free software, and as some robot are said to be contrib, I cannot know if they are realy free or not. - So for robot you will submit please, please put a copyright and a licence (preferably free) for us to distribute, modify and use it, - and for robot already included, could we have some clarification ? (I know that rotate_and_fire and seek_and_destroy were there for a very long time so are probably part of realtimebatlle and so under the same licence, and empty and raziel are so short that one could argue that they are not realy copyrighthable, but I would prefer to have some clarification before making the new package) |

Hi! I found the RTB project on linuxgames.com <http://linuxgames.com> and i= t reminded me of all the fun I had playing Robot Battle so many years ago. I just wanted to greet whoever might be out there. So far I am playing with the joypad robot, adapting it to work with my standard analog ps2-clone pad= . I can't wait to get into the other stuff, but this caught my eye as interesting when I opened up all the samples. Looking forward to getting my feet wet in some future competitions. |

Due to our new members we got as a result of our sourceforge job offers (yes, that really works 8-), I have written down all suggestions what to do in the newer future in the task manager. Cause most of the task that were in here are already outdated, you can find the current ones in the new created subproject "RealTimeBattle reloaded" : https://sourceforge.net/pm/task.php?group_project_id=41012&group_id=561&func=browse Have a lot of fun with the new jobs and help to get RealTimeBattle even better. Have you ever thought of the possibility to use RealTimeBattle for learning and teaching purposes in school? You can for example use the game in schools in the field of applied physics and computer studies. I think using this game in class may be very attractive for some students while they can learn about writing simple robots (the better the programs are, the better their robots will fight) and learn a lot about kinematic because the model RealTimeBattle uses to simulate its virtual environment is very detailed and sophisticated so that the robots really move in a realistic way. Perhaps you know some engaged teachers or students you can tell about this idea. The RealTimeBattle Team Framework Group will support such activities, so we will try answer related questions. Thank you Johannes Nicolai |

The RealTimeBattle Team Framework group proudly announces RealTimeBattle 1.0.7. As you can see from the version number, this release is derived on the sources of the port to newer versions of gtk (>=2.0) and gcc (>=3.0). Thus this version does not differ in functionality with the older version; the protocol was left unchanged. To make downloading more attractive, we decided to ship v. 1.0.7 in two flavors: The content of the Standard Edition is similar to the older releases. The new features are: -a completely new and now (again) working installation and configuration system -fixes of all critical known bugs (see Sourceforge Bug Tracker for details) -an improved documentation The real highlight is the Extended Edition. This package brings you all important Add-Ons for "RTB - Gamers": -the RTB-Team-Framework lets you develop robots that can efficiently operate in a team (tutorial included) -about twenty different robots written in C++, C, Java and Perl (incl. the Japanese Joystick Robot (yes it really works)) -more arenas (incl. the official competition arenas) -improved international documentation in English, French, German and Spanish Important: Please read the files EXTRAROBOTS.README and README first. Of course, the extended version contains all features of the standard version. You can download the sources of both versions from SourceForge. If you have interests in a binary version for a certain distribution / platform, please contact the officials of your distribution that you like RealTimeBattle and want to play it and contact us so that we can arrange further steps. For the next months we plan to extend the team capabilities of RealTimeBattle without changing the protocol and add some other nice features like sound support (optional). At this point we like to inform that we urgently need more developers, testers, analysts and people writing documentation to improve the quality of RealTimeBattle and the RealTimeBattle Team Framework (see Sourceforge task manager for some ideas what to do, please note that the tasks for RealTimeBattle (not for the framework) are out of date). If you think, that you are able to help us, don't wait! We are thankful for every volunteer. For more information about RealTimeBattle visit our website which was updated in the last weeks and has now an official robot database. So if you have developed a robot, please upload it to the database and let new developers learn from and compete against your robot. It is likely that your robot will be included in the next release so that everybody can take part on your programming skills and experience. Also have a look at the RTB-Team-Project which provides you interesting details about their team-play-framework and RealTimeBattle itself. If you encounter any installation / compilation / playing errors or want to give us some hints, please write to the appropriate mailing list. And now: Happy coding 8-) |

For separating GUI from Core, that's what we have done... It's a bit more complicated than what you said because the GUI have to keep track of the robots moves (as it can't access to the Core data) without computing all the moves. But the log files are huge, and it's not acceptable for sending them throw the net... Cleaning the Core is done in a couple of hours ! But the problem is that RTB was not so well designed. Erik and Ragnar tryed to make RTBv2 with a better design, but unfortunatly, no doc : no way for me to go into that code. I'm trying to remove everything in arena that shouldn't be in arena (Controlling a Robot is not the role of the arena for exemple... arena just move objects). RobotIO is separated from Robot... Tools (Cannon, Radar, ...) are now separated from robots also. I have changed the design of Wall and ArenaObject, so walls are more configurables. Mines and Cookies are now defined in one class Extras instead of 3 classes. Now I am working on a collision dispatcher (collision code wouldn't be in robot class anymore). To come back to GUI, the problem with pipes is that you can't have more than one viewer... This may be changed by using an other program acting like a viewer that would "multicast" to other viewers... I don't know if this could be a good solution for local viewers, but multicasting could be good for net viewers that are at the same place (sending one log on a long distance and then dispatch it when it's on a LAN). Well, I will put my code on CVS this week, but in an other repository as the RealTimeBattle one is a real mess... I tryed to clean it up, but it's even worst now... I think this discution can be continued on rtb-devel list :-) ------ Ursprungligt meddelande ------------------- Fr=E5n: Udo Stenzel <u.s...@we...> Datum: Sun, 14 Dec 2003 20:16:27 +0100 =C4mne: Re: [Realtimebattle-discussion] What are you up to? Hello, > I am working on a RTB-Core which is RTB without any graphics, and > MrFriendly is working on a GTKmm port of RTB which is separated from > the core (using log-files). Is that really that hard? RTB can already play back logfiles, which is exactly what is needed for a passive "observer" program. It can write logfiles, which is what is needed to feed the observer. What's missing is an interface to control the arena from the observer. I think that should be done as a command line interface, which is connected to a pipe when running the GUI. Even the command line is almost there in the form of the tournament files, and the server should definitely have a command line to make automating tournaments easy. So I'd believe the basic steps necessary are: make a copy of the source, kill everything smelling of GTK from the original, kill everything not using GTK from the copy, cleanup. Um, in an ideal world, that is. > Currently, GUI is running RTBCore using a fork/pipe. I think the pipe is the better solution. A pipe is almost the same as a socket and a socket interface would allow multiple observers at the same time. That would be nice: imagine a tournament, observed world wide in real time! (pun intended) It's even more nice as everything is already there, in a sense. BTW, not using CVS is not the best idea. Makes the project appear dead and yes, I'd very much like to track changes and send patches. Udo. -- They laughed at Einstein. They laughed at the Wright Brothers. Hello, We have released a version which is compatible with gcc3 and gtk2. This is just to make you be patient :-) Your proposals are allmost done ! I am working on a RTB-Core which is RTB without any graphics, and MrFriendly is working on a GTKmm port of RTB which is separated from the core (using log-files). It's quite slow to develop as we only are two... And I'm looking for a job, so I have other things to do also :-( Core needs to be more stable (lot's of thinks have changed, so it must be tested), and GUI must be more mature. I hope we will get something nice in Jan-Feb. There is a couple of enhances : team playing, teleports, blackholes and flows, but old robots are still "compatible" I'm also looking for a way to make arenas more configurable in the arena files. It is quite difficult to help as we are both working on our own comp without submiting anything by CVS, but if you insist, I can send you my sources and an old version of the GTKmm interface, so you can test and debug it. Just to be more "technical" : Currently, GUI is running RTBCore using a fork/pipe. I was thinking in connecting them using a thread and a class interface (which is quite similar to an output to a log file). If you are interested, you can help me to specify it a bit more... PS : Sorry for the row presentation of this mail, but this is not my fault... using a kind of webmail... ------ Ursprungligt meddelande ------------------- Fr=E5n: Udo Stenzel <u.s...@we...> Datum: Sat, 13 Dec 2003 22:58:00 +0100 =C4mne: [Realtimebattle-discussion] What are you up to? We also need people for the website. And help to develop ! So if you=20 know people interested, try to make them help !!! /Benoit |
