#6 natsemi module / Netgear FA312

I have a Netgear FA312 FastEthernet NIC. PLAC loads
the natsemi module correctly on booting but the
switch's LEDs are not on, not indicating any connected
networkcard. When I configure the card manually via
ifconfig and set its state to 'up' I should be able to ping
some hosts in my network. It doesnt work though.
Eventhough the interface eth0 is "up", the LEDs on the
switch are out and no ping replies of course.
