  • Peppermint OS

    Peppermint OS - 2024-05-27

Sometime this summer, we been doing some work on an xDaily Gui and a few updates to the terminal xDaily as well. The server builds are an expected new branch, GnomeFlashback and the Main Flagship XFCE builds will be out, The pep community has asked for a preloaded XFCE branch, that will be available,  There are few other efforts happening we will try to keep this updated as we make progress. hope that helps

I'm already looking forward to it, I've been using linux mint xfce for a very long time but for the last 1/2 year I've been using pepa xD , I'm very happy and it's good news, I have two laptops with peppermint dell 6410 and lenovo y50-70 (I don't have nvidia installed because there are some problems and I can't deal with them) will it be possible to upgrade without reinstalling the system? thanks and greetings to all from Poland xD

You have Bookworm, this being our current release.

When Trixie is declared stable circa June 2025, follow the upgrade path instructions here: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianUpgrade and

      What he is sayings.
We are based on Debian, as they release New major upgrades, we will follow, with our own time line, and release major Peppermint updates as well at that time.

In 2025 it is expected that Debian will begin to release Trixie as their next major release.

In the mean time, yes we will put out updates of the current base of Debian Peppemrint with fixes and and improvements, based on feedback from the community and developers.
That is why yes we are working towards a release of PeppermintOS this summer to included these types of things. After that we will start preparing and testing for the 2025 Debian Trixie.

See.... Debian usually releases a new version about every two years or so, but they maintain the their releases for a fair amount of time, and since we are based on debian we are able to follow the same end of life cycle for example here is the life cycle of Debian 11 and Debian 12
      * Debian 11 “Bullseye” - August 15th, 2024 to June 30th, 2026
      * Debian 12 “Bookworm” - June 11th, 2026 to June 30th, 2028

Additionally cavy is telling you, just because in 2025 Debian13 is release and we release a new build of Peppermint bases on Debian 13 you don't have to do a full reinstall of your computer, because Debian always has an upgrade path to the next version, So at a t that time since we are based on Debian, you can simply follow the upgrade path that is provided by the Debian Team.

To your Specific question about the releases that we do this summer Will I be able to upgrade from this version without a clean reinstallation

The release that we will do this summer, will be based on bookworm which is what you have now. So no you will not need to do a re-installation. At the time release we will most likely put out information explaining what changes were made and how to apply these changes to your current system, without the need to reinstall .
      Hope that helps :-)

    Peppermint OS - 2024-05-31

In terms of the core system not really a whole lot has changed. meaning updates from Debian will be just fine,

What we did change though is
    1. We created a GUI for the xDaily terminal update tool
    2. The Pephub had been merged with the xfce4 settings, a lot of feedback we got mentioned a separate pephub was redundant
    3. Kumo will use the min browser for SSBs
    4. btrfs will be available,
    5. Plymouth updated with new branding
There are few more things but those are the ones off the top of my head.

Those things, can be updated, manually, but we will look at having a scripting tool that will help get these changes, they are not core system things its not really a need for upgrading...... know what I mean, its just collections of adjustments and improvements , and they are all written mostly in python files.

The process is pretty simple download and place files in specific locations on your computer. Not a complex process.,

As we get closer to a releases we will have more info on how to get these updates, without reinstalling.
    Hope that helps

greetings...voidlinux is 1 of 6 distros i use on a 18+yr old computer. yesterday, i decided to look at pepvoid on a live usb. it ran fine. so, today i decided to install it on computer in a spare partition. right after the install, i dropped to a tty and did an update. about 2gb of files to download taking over 6gb additional space, for an over 6 month old, rolling release iso i was hopefully optimistic. rebooted and all worked fine, no problems, so far. i see you added octoxbps, nice. but, for those new to void or void respins. i'd suggest trying vpm for managing packages; and, rsv or vsv (or both) for service management to those that prefer using the terminal. on my dinosaur computer, void and respins boot faster, download pkgs faster and installs faster and is very solid. thank you for this version of peppermint.

Hi there. I downloaded the PepVoid Iso from the build site and installed it on my laptop.A llittle different from what I have been using but got most things installed and its running great and extremely stable. The encryption worked fine with btrfs as the file system. A small pity that Stacer and Naver whale aren't in the repos but I can get around that okay. I realize its an early release but as i mentioned, its been rock solid for me.

The only trouble I have had is installing my Brother MFC-J1012DW printer. It installed easily on my deb based system using a deb file from Brother and installing i386 arcitechture. I tried to install it via the Cups web interface but it keeps telling me when I click on Administration that access it forbidden, that I don't have privileges to do that. Been checking lot on web sites but nothing much yet, at least not easy enough for me to set up as yet. The Brother website only has files for deb and RPM. And no PPD.

Do you have any ideas on how to get around that ? Thanks so much. Keep up the good work. Looking good so far.

  • generalmooseance

Further to the above, I found an already compiled PPD which looks like it will work but still need to be able to access administration tab on cups web interface. Still no success installing printer :(

  • generalmooseance

I was able to fix the admin access problem by using sudo usermod -aG lpadmin < username>. Can now access Cups interface as desired. Havent found the right combination yet to add the print properly but hopefully soon.

Sorry. Missprint there. Should read, " I haven't found the right combination in cups adminstration tab to properly install the printer yet.

greetings..saw this last night. hope it's resolved for you. if not, this is how i've installed my brother hl-2140 printer in linux distros tried (void, deb, rpm, arch) that had no option in menus. i used, referenced distrotubes video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnmCbEWNV1w ). his process has worked in all i have tried and is easier for me than using cups web. basically, make sure of user groups (lp, lpadmin) which you've done. install cups (which you've done). enable cups service if not done automatically after install. may need to reboot depending on distro. install brother laser printer driver. install "system-config-printer", and i used a different, earlier ppd for my specific printer as the originally had issues. gl.
