You don't say what version of the client libraries you are
using. I'm guessing it's 4.0.x. Why don't you do what the
error message says and get an upgraded client.

I'm having the same problem. There's a news item saying a
new release candidate is out (1.1.5) and it sounds like
mySQL 4.1 is being supported. But I haven't figured out
where this 1.1.5 might be downloaded. Why isn't it listed
with the others?

Sorry, was looking for win32 binary but I see in docs you've
stopped providing that kind of support. I'll advise my
client (a Windows shop) that Perl through ActiveState might
be a better option for mySQL work (for them -- personally I
favor Python).

No, Windows support is the same as it's always been: I don't
have the tools to build a Windows binary, but if somebody
sends me one, I'll make it available.
