What is My Inventory?

The inventory (clothes, shapes, attachments etc.) of an avatar in Open Simulator and the Linden Lab's grids and regions is traditionally stored centrally in the databases of the grid.

If a user only visits one or maybe two grids, this central storage works quite well, but as more and more grids are starting to appear, the centralist thinking starts to become frustrating. Especially if the grid is discontinued and shuts down.

Each time a user creates an account on a new grid, the user is faced with a nearly empty inventory, and has to spend time searching for suitable clothes and accessories.

There is a lot of good quality free or permissively licensed content available, but often it is difficult to find the items, or the grid where you have created and account does not have a specific item you like.

In many situations it would be a lot simpler if a user could simply reuse the inventory already accumulated. This project is an attempt to give the user control of the inventory, allowing the upload and download of inventory elements between different grids. But like all projects, it starts with a bare core of features.

The current feature set is:

  • Host inventory cache, either on a local computer or in the "cloud"
  • Import .iar files to the inventory cache
  • Backup existing inventories from existing accounts to the inventory cache
  • Export from the inventory cache to existing accounts

Supported platforms:

My Inventory is a cross platform application, and each release is being tested on Windows and Linux (Primarily Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10). In theory it may work on Mac's but it is not one of the reference platforms.
