TRAK_Model_template.xml import fails with "Error parsing"
MDG for Sparx' Enterprise Architect to Create TRAK arch. descriptions
Brought to you by:

Latest TRAK_MDG download: TRAK_MDG_144.xml can be imported into EA 16.0.1605 but TRAK_model_template.xml gives a "Error Parsing" error. Is there a workaround or fix?

Trying to understand tge steps you're following
Do you mean when you create a model using the model wizard?
or are you actually importing the template model into Sparx EA?
Hi Nic,
I was trying to import the 2 .xml files that were in the MDG download into
EA. One worked and the other one gives a parsing error but no other
details. I am not an expert on EA. I use Import MDG Technology to point it
to the XML files. Not sure if there is a log or something that would give
more details.
What I am trying to do is create a model using TRAK. I could create a
sample using the model wizard, it is called TRAK Template AD. And I can
create model elements by selecting the "specialised toolset then Model
Technologies, then TRAK Toolbox - Common, then the TRAK Viewpoint.
It seems a bit complicated but works. I was wondering if the
TRAK_model_template would make that easier?
BTW. I find TRAK amazing. It is great work and I am trying to model a
ship's navigation system using it, because it has exactly the right kind of
viewpoints and elements for this.
Best Regards
Heinz

#9Hi Heinz. Just for my benefit - it sounds as though the model template is working - creating a model using the Model Wizard. Is this correct?
The only other file that could be imported is TRAK_taggedValues.xml which contains a set of (in Sparx terms) which define a set of tagged values used to implement some of the AD element attributes e.g. date modified, approval authority, element URI in UML using some of Sparx EA's special features e.g. a date picker control. Is it this import that causes problems?
In order to load an MDG technology you shouldn't be using 'Import Technology' (it's confusing I know).
If you've placed the TRAK_model_template.xml and TRAK_MDG_144.xml file in a known folder - which it sounds like you have done - all you need to do is 'enable' this - https://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/16.0/modeling_frameworks/manage_mdg_technologies.html
ie under Specialize > Manage Technology > then find MDG for TRAK and ensure that the check box is ticked.
Note - you will first have to remove any MDG for TRAK that you've imported using 'Import Technology'. See under Notes in https://sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/16.0/modeling_frameworks/importmdgtechnologies.html 'to remove an MDG Technology...'
and, yes, having 'import' under 'publish' is another Sparx EA oddity
Hi Nic,
I followed the instruction and everything seems to work
Many thanks

If you need any further TRAK advice I'll send my contact details separately - would be interested in your experience / application
Hi Nic,
I am trying to introduce MBSE into a very traditional engineering place. I
finally got management to allow me to give MBSE a test drive. I like TRAK,
following it for a year or so and I think the TRAK viewpoints will
resonate better than other AFs. I do want to not say too much more at the
moment. Not sure if would be allowed to but I will certainly investigate
what I can share. Is your contact wikitect@users.sourceforge.net ?
Cheers
Heinz

#9Yes- that'll work in the first instance.
BTW have you looked at the TRAK Viewpoints specification which defines view purpose, content and provides some examples (for the views you need)?
See website at https://trakviewpoints.sourceforge.io/ and the SourceForge project site at https://sf.net/trakviewpoints
Hi Nic,
indeed I have been studying it. Great work.
