=2D----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 The time has finally arrived. Magick 2.0 (the full version) has finally been released, and officially put= =20 into maintanence mode. For those who were keeping track of it, there are n= ot=20 too many differences between 2.0 and the 3rd release candidate, just a smal= l=20 bugfix in MLOCK, and the addition of KILLCHAN. To download Magick 2.0, go to: ftp://ftp.magick.tm/pub/magick.tm/Magick-II Windows 95/98/ME and NT/2000/XP pre-compiled binaries are also available in= =20 the 'bin' subdirectory. More pre-compiled binaries (eg. for solaris, linux= ,=20 etc) will be made available over the next few days. So what happens now? Well, as mentioned before Magick 2.0 is now in mainta= nce=20 mode, meaning it will be actively supported, however all future releases fo= r=20 2.0 will be done in the form of patches, or patch-releases (full releases=20 with the patch applied). The code has already been branched in the source= =20 archive, and development on Magick 2.1 will now begin. Magick 2.1 will see the activation of 2 new developers, and will have a muc= h=20 quicker release schedule than Magick 2.0 had. To see some of the planned=20 features for Magick 2.1, go to: http://www.magick.tm/devel/spec_index.html Also in the next few days, I'll be creating a page where people can downloa= d=20 language packs for Magick 2.0. So if you know anyone willing to translate= =20 the 3 language files for Magick, encourage them to do so, and once each=20 language file is complete (or updated) I'll put it up on the language page= =20 for people to download. I hope you will enjoy using Magick 2.0, and look forward to Magick 2.1 as m= uch=20 as the development team does. =2D --=20 PreZ Development Head Magick IRC Services Magick IRC Services, power to the PEOPLE! Best IRCD for Magick 1.4 would prollie be any version of dalnet's ircd=20 BEFORE bahamut (ie. the dreamforge series) ... As for compiling ACE and Magick, its not all that hard, however there=20 are certain requirements for compiling ACE and Magick II -- since your=20 on linux, you dont need pth or zlib, you already have them installed. The most important things when looking at compiling Magick II are: 1) The compiler you have -- it must be >=3D 2.95.x, I use 3.0.1 :) 2) Memory, you have to have a significant amount to compile (I'd say=20 about 128mb of REAL ram, and at least 64mb of swap). You can compile=20 with less, however it can take a REAL long time to do so, as it would be=20 swapping parts of the compile continually. As for ACE and Magick II, I'll list out some instructions for compiling=20 both of them, and installing Magick. cd ACE_wrappers export ACE_ROOT=3D$PWD cd ace ln -s config-linux.h config.h cd ../include/makeinclude ln -s platform_linux.GNU platform_macros.GNU cd ../.. make cd .. Before doing the make, you may want to edit the Makefile, and limit the=20 amount of directories its oging to compile (ie. the DIRS =3D option) to=20 just ace, you dont need the rest, but it wont hurt. I'm going to assume=20 you're leaving the libACE.so file in the ACE_wrappers/ace directory,=20 so after the above ... cd Magick-2.0b12 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=3D$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$PWD/../ACE_wrappers/ace export LD_LIBRARY_PATH ./configure --with-acelib=3D$PWD/../ACE_wrappers/ace/libACE.so --with-aceinc $PWD/../ACE_wrappers make cd .. Now you will have built ACE and Magick ... Magick DOES support make=20 install if you want to use it, but I usually dont, I usually use the=20 following instructions to setup my services directory: mkdir services cd services mkdir bkup mkdir logs cp ../Magick-2.0b12/src/magick . cp ../Magick-2.0b12/src/magick.debug . cp ../Magick-2.0b12/src/magick_keygen . cp ../Magick-2.0b12/docs/magick.ini . cp -r ../Magick-2.0b12/lang . cp -r ../Magick-2.0b12/files . cd .. cp Magick-2.0b12/helper/services* . The last step there will copy 3 files (serviceschk, servicesbkup, and=20 servicescycle) to the parent directory of services (usually your home=20 directory). You should edit these files, and put them into the crontab.=20 They are used to restart services, backup the databases into a backup=20 directory, and copy, clear, and archive the logs respectively. Anyway, above is a command-by-command instruction set on how to setup=20 ACE and Magick II on linux ... Its actually not all that hard really. I hope it helps you, but as for Magick 1.x, its no longer being=20 maintained. There are a few modified versions of Magick 1.4 out there=20 which may add supoprt for some more recent IRCD's, but I dont know where=20 these versions are (do a websearch), and I cant vouch for any of the=20 code in them. Well, It appears the magick.tm domain has started work work again! I'm extremely pleased about this fact, as I've been trying to figure out a new domain ever since it stopped working. Why did it go down? The TM NIC service stopped accepting new registrations in 1999, and since that time, .tm domains have systematically stopped working. It happened to magick.tm in February. But for some reason, its just suddenly come back! So the webpage is back up at: http://www.magick.tm We also now have a mirror at: http://magick.sourceforge.net And our project site is still at: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/magick I would like to have the entire magick.tm site re-designed. If you are good with web design (be it html, java, flash, etc) then why not see if you can come up with a Proof Of Concept site? A proof of concept site is not a full site, just something showing what the final product will look like -- ie. displaying the design witout doing the whole site. I am not adverse to new technologies like flash, php, etc -- however if these are used, then a standard html site must also be developed in conjunction, as the maigck.tm site must be viewable both with new browsers, and the old text- based ones (ala. lynx). I want the new page to be able to better accomodate multipal projects, as Magick now has 2 major releases (Magick I and Magick II), and there are some other side-projects and support applications I would like to add to the magick website. Our project site handles all things like bug tracking, feature requests, mailing lists, forums and tasks. So I would like a big fat link to it *grin*. However the main site (aka. the 'product site') will handle everything else. The project site is more geared to 'whats coming', the Product site is all about whats here now and whats currently happening. Therefore the main news section, downloads, documentation, links, etc should still all be handled on the main site (the one I want to have re-designed). I dont care about how the layout is done, but the sections should be approximately what they are now, but with the ability to add or remove new sections where necessary -- and as I said, it should be able to support multipal projects (namely for now, Magick I and Magick II). As you can see in the documentation and news sections, I hacked it in for the current website, its not pretty. Oh, the last requirement is I have to be able to modify it myself -- to do things like add a new release, add news, etc. I know its a big ask, and not for the faint of heart, but if you have some skill, and want to contribute, then please feel free! Remember, the official logo of Magick is the Dragonfly, and I want to keep that (tho a better looking dragonfly would be nice). Also, keep true to the name -- Magick -- therefore mysitical stuff is obviously the theme you should be shooting for :) Thanks a bunch all those who help me out with this, -- _O_ PreZ :) Finger pr...@sr... _O_ | pr...@go... for full PGP Public Key | PGP FingerPrint: B3 0C F3 32 DE 5A 7D 90 26 F6 FA 38 CC 0A 2D D8 Goth Code '98: tSKeba5qaSabsaaaGbaa75KAASWGuajmsvbieqcL4BaaLb3F4 nId5mefqmDjmmgm#haxthgzpj4GiysNkycSRGHabiabOkauNSW Magick Code .92: MWI S W++ N+ PCE/NA++ D A a+ C G QO+ 666 Y |

Well all, As you probably all noticed, magick.tm is no more *sigh* let us all weep for that which kept our ship afloat for so long. I've not yet updated the internal magick files yet. This being said, there are a few things I should point out: 1) Magick has now been split into a 'product' and a 'project' page. The Magick PRODUCT page is to do with the support and help for existing magick software when it is released. This is what www.magick.tm was. This is now available at: http://magick.sourceforge.net The Magick PROJECT page is to do with development of new magick products, including tasks for what is slated in future releases, bug tracking, forums and discussions about magick, and downloads of beta and newer software. This site also handles the mailing lists. This is now available at: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/magick 2) As you may have noticed, the mailing list names have changed. They are also now subscribable to via. a webpage OR via. email. To get email help on how to subscribe/unsubscribe or anything else you can do, you can email: magick-<listname>-re...@li... with 'help' in the body of the email. You may do the same in a slightly restricted form by going to the Magick PROJECT page and clicking on 'Lists'. The mailing lists are also now archived online, also accessable from the PROJECT page's List section. 3) Magick FTP site changed. Once again, because the magikc.tm has gone bye-bye, we have had to change the FTP server you may obtain Magick from. In actual fact, its the same server, just a different address. You may access the Magick file archive at: ftp://ftp.magick.tm/pub/magick.tm As usual, Magick II is in the beta directory. 4) Project page is a fully managed development environment. If you goto the Magick project page, you will notice many sections. This page is where we (the development team) track bugs and tasks, and announce development news. It is also where you (as the general magick population) can enter new bugs, or discuss magick in the forums provided, download documentation stored online, or download files (such as the current release, or any historical ones). You may also browse the mailing list archives from this page. 5) Magick still kicking on ... :) Incase your wondering what is happening with Magick. Magick 2.0 is still in beta, however is is mostly done. Only a few bugs to work out (which given the hours looking at it, we will find) and it will be ready to release. I will be the first to say it has been in development and beta FAR FAR too long, however if you've ever looked at the product, you will agree it is WELL worth the hours put in. When released, Magick II will be release not only in source releases, but various binary releases - as will ACE (which is required to run Magick 2.0). As soon as we've got all the kinks out, and we have it running stable on both small and large test networks for a reasonable period of time (a few weeks), we will release it. However feel free to download the beta packages and test it, it IS fairly solid as is, and if you find a bug, tell us! We'd LOVE to hear about it. 6) New development team members. Magick has conscripted 2 new development team members. Stephen Cox and Brian King. With these two additions come extra talent, and more importantly, extra people looking at the code trying to figure out where the problems are, and help enhanse it. We also have acquired a new testing tool, which enables us to test our scalability, by simulating large networks, and watching where it breaks. Things are definately moving forwards. Anyway, thank you all for your patience and support, and dont forget to update your email aliases to the new mailing list addresses. And if you wish to be unsubscribed, please goto the Lists section of Magick's PROJECT page.
