Linux Myst Install and Config Tips

Welcome to Linux Myst.

Dec 13, 2013 - NEW RELESE "nebula". If you want a smaller footprint image and download, a tighter software mix and can do with gnome stuff Nebula is for you. It is light, simple and nimble on hardware and under multiprocessor and higher RAM capacity machines is one of the fastest window managers you will experience. Fixes several small bugs in "Celestial" and still uses the same installation and post install instructions with a more modest software mix. Enjoy!

We are a Linux Distribution using the stable channel of the Debian Linux OS (aka Wheezy) on a Linux 3.2+ kernel and with the inclusion of the Myst Window Manager designed for media display, video kiosks and a variety of display and heavy visual users that want a clutter free and easy to layout window manager with over 300 different combinations using on a few simple menu commands. Included in the initial release are Gnome/Meta-city for transition use and the cutting edge evolutionary Myst window manager.

Designed for daily heavy information display use, Myst helps take layout and easy use to a whole new level. Integration plug-ins will allow users to automate and layout multiple victuals in a variety of easy to view and easy to use patterns.

  • INSTALLATION NOTE

  • You can evaluate by copying the download file to a USB stick and using the command on any linux system as follows:

# cp yourLinuxMyst.iso /dev/sdX - where sdX is the your flash drive /dev/sdc etc...
# sync

USER NAME FOR LIVE MODE

  1. Live mode tips: user name "user" password "live"

After install edit /etc/sudoers as root user (gedit, joe) and add line:

your-login-user-name ALL=(ALL:ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

the username is the one you created when you installed the system. Please note your root and username passwords - you will need them to customize the system. The above live will enable all root access menu items - enjoy! (more install tips soon). In addition menu is editable in in the menu itself (JOE editor is default - you can change to VIM or SubLime3, LeafPad... which is located in /usr/share/msyt/myst.config. After you update your menu - select myst-restart from the menu to reload the menu.

SETUP YOUR DEBIAN MIRROR - USA EXAMPLE SHOWN - USE your COUNTRY and LOCAL

First Add mirrors by editing the file as "root" (ie "su -" to get root) then edit the file using jstar,joe,vim or ed add the following lines to /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free

  1. Myst usage tips: Myst is like Infernos Rio but has the added menu items as follows:
    new - create a new aterm window - transparent etc...
    reshape - using the the right mouse button - drag-sweep release to shape your window
    move - using the right mouse button move your window
    max maximize but do not hide the system monitor or the "peek area" below
    top - auto-shape window to top half of screen
    bot - auto-shape window to bottom half of screen
    ltop - size and place window in top left quadrant
    rtop - size and place window in top right quadrant
    lbot - size and place window in bottom left quadrant
    rbot - size and place window in bottom right quadrant
    left -size and place window in left half of screen
    right size and place window in right half of screen
    pinbot - pin a half size window to the very bottom for peek-through
    delete -delete the current window and close the program
    hide - minimize the window into the menu and

USE the center button to select the virtual desktop

USE the left button to select preconfiugured menu items - you can edit and change in /usr/share/myst/bin
