Hi,
I stumbled over jNetMap and I first have to say: Nice work! I really like this usefull part of software.
I use it to administrate a little Network with many different types of devices (loggers, routers, server, etc) that needs to be monitored for possible loss of connection. In the same time I use jNetMap as a control-panel to get quick access to all devices.
I've a feature-request, that would help me solve a problem. Maybe other users find it also usefull.
My problem is, that I sometimes have to give my jNetMap-file to a friend because he also needs to monitor the network, but I dont want him to be able to edit something. His IT-Skills are so bad that I in fact would really like to give him a non-editable (non-destructable) version of my jNetMap-file that also has all edit/menu-buttons disabled.
I also dont want him to see the notes of the devices (as I store passwords and other private infos there).
The Problem is, that my network has changes every-day, so my jNetMap-file also needs always to be updated.
So this would be a nice feature for any case there someone has to hand out this file in a noob-friendly/restricted way.
I hope I could explain it the right way.....my english is not the best

Hi revnu
Thanks :-)
Hm, that is an interesting idea which I haven't considered yet. Right now the only way you could achieve this would be a network share where you have full access and he only has read-only access. No guarantees though on how jNetMap might react in sich an environment...
As for the passwords: I would strongly urge you to NOT store sensitive information in the notes section, as it is not protected in any way (unless you add a password in the save dialog). Dedicated tools (such as KeePass) are better suited for that job.
cheers

Hi rakudave,
ya, I know that this is no safe place to store passwords :) In that case these passwords are not securitycritical, weak 1234-types of passwords (no important data on this devices). But maybe that could be implemented in "Locked-mode".....or lets better say: "Admin mode" vs "guest-user".
Maybe I should give an example to picture a possible scenario:
Letz say I have my Networkmap (that has changes from time-to-time). Now I need to send the updated version to the different users. They should not able to edit anything. Maybe also see another Type of layout with Infoboxes/Notes/etc, that I as Admin dont need to know (and also the other site around).
Best would be if I as Admin could switch to "guest-user"-editmode, while Im in my map, then I could free edit how the guest user sees it, also I restrict everything from menu to all icons, and at the end export this as exe-file,.....maybe Im totally wrong here, as my skills in programming are not so advanced. But I know this from "Autohotkey", a scripttool to automate key-macros, and that is able to also export a script as exe-file, so you dont need the rest of the framework to use the function you scripted.
Also I planned to make a map from germany and put it as backround on my netmap, so the devices are on the same local spot. But for that we need to be able to switch the backround to a costum-pic. Or maybe googlemaps-integration? :-D Haha, ok I stop, too much requests at one time, Im getting creative about this. Im sry that my programming skills suck, otherwise I would help this project :)
