I had this problem with Ubuntu 7.04. This came up for me after installing eclipse though (which is a resource hog) I have uninstalled eclipse and reinstalled jedit, that didn't work. After many tries I realized I have to have Java 6 installed on my system to get jedit to work now. Then menu in jedit is buggy now but it starts at least. I'll just use Alt+(whatever) to access the menu.
