iChilli(TM) News Item 2003-02-03: =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Originator: The iChilli(TM) Group Primary Contact: in...@ic... http://ichilli.sourceforge.net/ Date: 2003-02-03 Topic: iChilli(TM) Manual 1.0 Released Abstract: -~-~-~-~- The iChilli mobile J2EE platform provides a J2EE compliant runtime environment for both server and mobile platforms, such as J2ME, MIDP or other CLDC based devices. For example iChilli runs on the PersonalJava enabled Sharp Zaurus and Compaq's iPAQ. This is the first major release of the iChilli(TM) manual. Contents: -~-~-~-~- 1. Introduction 2. Details 2.1 The Mobile World 2.2 Mobile Devices 2.3 A J2ME Introduction 3. The iChilli(TM) Vision 4. The iChilli(TM) Architecture 5. The iChilli(TM) Roadmap 6. Feedback 1. Introduction: -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ It is our very pleasure to anounce the immediate availability of the first version of the iChilli(TM) manual. The iChilli(TM) manual was introduced to give people an in-depth overview about what the iChilli(TM) group is aiming by providing the iChilli(TM) mobile J2EE platform. The current iChilli(TM) manual is the result of the research efforts undertaken by Daniel S. Haischt while writting his diploma thesis at the University of Applied Science, Reutlingen. The thesis was submited for approval at the 20th of january 2003. An up-to-date version of the iChilli(TM) manual can be found at the following internet address: -> http://ichilli.sourceforge.net/doc-intro.html 2. Details: -~-~-~-~-~- This section gives you a brief overview about the information you should expect to be found within the iChilli(TM) manual. 2.1 The Mobile World: -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- This chapter within the iChilli(TM) manual gives you a detailed overview about what is meant by the term Mobile Word and how the iChilli(TM) project addresses several elements found within a Mobile World. You will be given an introduction into which devices will be targeted by the iChilli(TM) project and how the different devices will be differenciated according to device constraints. Additionally you will be given an introduction into terminologies of the Java(TM) 2 Micro Edition platform, because the iChilli(TM) leverages the J2ME platform. This makes it essential to understand certain parts of J2ME environments. 2.3 A J2ME Introduction: -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Everybody not familiar with the J2ME platform should have a certain interest in reading this chapter of the iChilli(TM) manual. This chapter clearly describes all the different J2ME profiles that are aiming to address the device differences currently found in the Mobile World. Additionaly this chapter tries to illustrates possible chalanges that may emerge while trying to develop a general purpose platform such as the iChilli(TM) mobile J2EE platform for mobile devices. 3. The iChilli(TM) Vision: -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ This chapter gives you a brief introduction about all the various iChilli(TM) system components that are composing the iChilli(TM) mobile J2EE platform. This chapter aims to give a overall overview about every system component and why they are required to be a part of the iChilli(TM) mobile J2EE platform. Everybody should be encouraged to read this chapter because it gives a glimpse about what the iChilli(TM) mobile J2EE platform is all about and what mobile issues will be addressed by the iChilli(TM) mobile J2EE platform. 4. The iChilli(TM) Architecture: -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Finally this chapter explains the architecture of a very first system architecture of a prototype that was developed while writting a diploma thesis about the iChilli(TM) mobile J2EE platform. This chapter especially provides informations about the iChilli(TM) J2EE server and the PersonalChilli mobile EJB runtime environment. Additionally you will be introduced into terminologies of the Linda coordination model, because the distrubuted object layer on which the iChilli(TM) system relies on is based on a Linda coordination model for mobile environments. Finally this chapter aims to explain how EJB application logic can be brought to CLDC based devices running for example a MIDP compliant Java VM. 5. The iChilli(TM) Roadmap: -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Reaching this point we would like to introduce a initial iChilli(TM) roadmap, which tries to illustrate upcomming milestones after having finished the iChilli(TM) diploma thesis. A couple of days ago we were able to install a Wiki system at sourceforge.net, a web based collaboration platform which helps us to coordinate any further project efforts. you can find the iChilli(TM) Wiki at the following internet address: -> http://ichilli.sourceforge.net/doc-faq.html We will post several so-called stories (a term emereged from XP methodologies) which will describe steps how to reach a certain milestone. Additionally that Wiki will contain already finished research efforts that won't be a part of the iChilli(TM) manual, additional HOWTOs and most importantly a convinient FAQ. The current iChilli(TM) roadmap, which is still in some kind of a flux, could be outlined as follows: 1. Q1 2003: Finish a Java VM comparison which provides a comparison matrix of current mobile Java VMs (PersonalJava, Personal Profile, MIDP). 2. Q1 2003: Update the iChilli(TM) web site to contain more project specific informations. 3. Q1 - Q2 2003: Provide a first jdk1.1.8 compliant EJB container system based on OpenEJB. Although this EJB container system does not contain a CMP container. 4. Q4 2003: Provide a first J2EE server system including a MDB container and a Web Services for J2EE compliant infrastructure. 5. Q1 - Q2 2004: Couple the iChilli(TM) J2EE server system and the PersonalChilli mobile EJB runtime environment together using the Lime distributed Java(TM) middleware. 6. Feedback: -~-~-~-~-~-~ We would like to encourage everyone to send any type of constructive feedback using the email adress fee...@ic... or one of the feedback HTML forms found at the iChilli(TM) web site.
