Unless I missed something obvious, HealPix does not seem to support installation of build products into an external directory target.
There is a configure script which doesn't accept 'prefix'. And there is no 'make install' target. Not supporting these is very odd and non-standard.
There appears to be no way to actually properly "install" this package by copying build products into another directory. One would have to do this manually or point to an in-place build.
I can't even remember the last time I encountered a package that did not support installation. Can someone please consider adding this feature? (You might even consider porting to a more modern build system like CMake at some point.)

Dear Anonymous,
thank you for your post.
After reading it, it seems that you are trying to do a system-wide installation of Healpix on someone else behalf.
As for me, I am not paid to maintain Healpix, but do it on my free time.
Since you claim a long experience of life, you may remember that introducing yourself goes a long way toward starting a constructive dialog.
