Since updating to OS 10.4.4 yesterday, I can no longer
launch gimp. The launch progress window appears on
screen, but remains blank. Must force quit to kill the
abortive launch. Apple X11 seems to be O.K. otherwise

What's the status of this problem? We've already duplicated
    this once in
    http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=326991, and I
expect more bug reports as users start to upgrade - and
unfortunately the Gimp.app site still doesn't advertize its
    own bug tracker.

it's caching the new fonts... let it run a few minutes

GIMP does run in 10.4 computers, I think this bug can be closed

Yes, GIMP does run in OS 10.4.x and higher, but each time the user/a system update installs a new font, GIMP takes 5 to 10 mins to launch the first time after the font changes are made. See comment below by 'nobody' on 2006-01-20 16:52.

Users of GIMP should be made aware of this issue and be warned to be patient with the first launch post-font change. Otherwise, they may be led to conclude erroneously, like I originally did, that the system update (or something else) has broken GIMP.

I don't recommend closing this bug report until it can be established that another more readily accessed bug report or FAQ has been posted highlighting the font caching issue for GIMP in OS 10.4.x.
