(I originally posted this by mistake in the Bugzilla at
www.gimp.org: I enclose the complete discussion to date.)
------- Original Report from steve@winnall.ch
I have English set up as my first language in my Mac OS X
system prefences. However, the Gimp starts up in German. This
appears to be because I had the "Order for sorted lists" set to
German. When I set this to English, the Gimp starts up in
English. I live in a multilingual environment (primarily German/
English) and these mixed settings ordinarily give me the
behaviour I need and expect. I suggest that the Gimp should
take its language settings solely from the language list.
Other information:
Even in German, the Gimp is a bloody good program!

GIMP takes the language settings from the environment like any
other UNIX application. What exactly do you suggest we should
change?

I'm sorry: this is my first contact with Bugzilla and I didn't realise
you were waiting for input from me.
I would beg to suggest that GIMP is not taking the language
settings from the environment in this case. My language setting
is English, but GIMP is starting up in German because I set the
sort order to German. I would expect GIMP to start up according
to the language setting and not the sort order.
If you go into "System Preferences..." and open the panel
"International" you will see how this is specified in Mac OS X.
How this maps onto Unix system variable, I do not know. But
clearly Mac OS X behaves slightly differently to Unix in this case.
Looking at the output of "env" in a terminal window, I see that
things like "LANG=" are completely missing.
Of course, it may be a bug in Mac OS X and not in GIMP, but I
haven't had any problems with any other programs.
Please let me know if you need any more information.

The point is that GIMP uses your language setting, certainly not
the collate order. I suggest that you ask Apple to fix their fiddling
with the language settings. This system tries to be a UNIX, it
should try to get that right.

I just tried it on OS X 10.3, changing the sort order has no effect
on what language GIMP uses.
Where'd you get your GIMP from? If you're using Gimp.app or
somesuch, perhaps they're trying to be clever in some startup
script and failing in this case.
You'll be better off filing a bug with whoever built your GIMP,
unless you really did build it from source.

I downloaded Gimp.app from a link at http://www.gimp.org/
macintosh/, which I now see points at SourceForge. Having
looked in the README, I found the following information:
"Gimp.app is packaged by Aaron Voisine <voisine@gmail.com>,
using the Fink project found at http://fink.sf.net and the Platypus
script wrapper from http://sveinbjorn.vefsyn.is/platypus".
In view of the link at www.gimp.org I had assumed that any
Bugzilla stuff would be directed to the people who were
responsible for the distribution. Since this is apparently not the
case (neither of you seem to be Mr Voisine) we'd best forget the
whole thing.
I didn't buy Mac OS X because I wanted something that tried to
be a Unix: I could have acquired Linux for less (it also tries to be a
Unix).
As far as I am concerned, we can close down this bug
completely.

The bug tracker for Gimp.app is at
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=104774&atid=639246
I've already posted a bug there about improving the main
Gimp.app site, maybe
you should complain about this to Aaron as well.

i think this problem also make filters and script fu menu disappear when u set a language different than english... for example i set italian and english and i see all menus in italian but no filters and script fu in menu, but if i select only english language in Preferences panel > international ... gimp work fine english menu and filter and script fu menus are ok!!! This problem comes only wit my new macbook osx 10.4.8 but with my old ibook works fine... any suggestion? (i think gimp try to translate filters and script-fu names in italian but can'find them.....)
