I cannot join some channels other friends are in under
StarCraft BroodWar, but I can join channels like
"Public Chat" and "Blizzard Tech Support". I'm am using
Join a Chat under the Buddies menu.
The problem is that some time ago Blizzard limited all
clients that log on without a cdkey (CHAT, Diablo 1,
Starcraft Shareware, etc.) to only being able to use public
channels. This was in an attempt to solve the problem of
floodbots and mass loads. Unfortunately, it did little good
besides convincing people to steal cdkeys if they wanted to
load, and I still see plenty of that going on (unfortunately).
The bottom line is, if you want to use non-public channels,
you need a keyed client on a binary (game-emulating)
connection (in other words, a connection that emulates
Starcraft or other real clients, not a CHAT connection). I
believe the author of this has done some work on a binary
plugin, but I'm not sure what the status is on it.

I surely hope he has made some progress because that would
be really neat. Could you get in contact with him and post a
status on that? In the mean time, it would be more user
friendly to have an error dialog pop up when you try to join
a non public channel, instead of having nothing happen.

Well, the binary plugin is avaiable at
www.sf.net/projects/gaim-bnetg.
Nothing is released yet, but the code work for sc/bw game
emulation... you can download sources from the cvs if you
need to try it :)
The fact is that I'am really busy at school in those days,
and I haven't the time to code now... maybe in the next
weeks I'll be able to write something...
Patience, I'll return to develop ASAP :)
