The program crashes or becomes unresponsive when playing notes on an external midi controller.The midi configuration I am using is in the attachment.

Could you tell me which version are you running and what operating system are you using ?
I remember having corrected a same kind of bug before due to the automation system but it
should not produce crashes anymore.
