If you have 10.3 (Panther) then you don't need these tools. The passwd tool in Panther has been updated to work properly with Password Server. Panther also comes with a tool called "pwpolicy" that provides basically all the functionality of dspasswd.
Unfortunately, I am unable to put any more development into this project at this time. If someone wants to add to the project and/or take it on, contact me about being added as a developer.
Version 1.1 adds the ability to set and modify the password server policy options or a PWS based user. See the README file for usage details.
I am declaring version 1.0 on the packages. I have heard no complaints about the passwd patch, though that could just mean nobody is using it.
dspasswd has gone through 4 revisions and I now consider it solid. There has been one report of problems, but considering the number of problems people have with the Password Server in general I don't think it is related to dspasswd.
Declaring version 1.0 means that I am no longer doing active development on the project. I have no future features planned and I know of no bugs. I will continue to address any bugs submitted to this site and will consider any feature requests made. This was meant to be a small, UNIX style "do one thing and do it simply" type tool, so I never expected the feature set to expand beyond what it is.
Beta 2 introduced a bug that broke the use of the -l parameter to specify a non-local node. Beta 3 fixes that bug.
Beta 2 of dspasswd contains the promised functionality to allow the conversion of a user from basic style to Password Server based. This of course implies you are using Mac OS X Server 10.2.x and have already set up the Password Server. See the README for details on usage.
Beta 2 of dspasswd will include the ability to convert a password from Basic to Password Server based, and often requested feature. I had hoped to have it done by now, but it turned out to involve a little more work than I had hoped. I expect it to be done within the next 10 days.
I have released Beta 1 of the two tools. See the Docs link for information on getting started.
I will be working to check the code into CVS over the weekend and will hopefully be releasing download files within the next week.
